Pencil This In: Hear NoHo, 'Ladies Night' at Cinefamily and Sound Art at LACMA
TV Junkie: NBC's Partial Announcement; Fallon Not A Disaster According to WSJ
Unless you are a Chicago Bulls or Boston Celtics fan (yeah!) this weekend's TV was kind of boring other than Sunday's "Breaking Bad" on AMC, which was excellent as usual. We wonder why the premiere of season 2 of "Ashes to Ashes" was pulled off of BBC America - it was a highlight for Saturday and pretty much the only alternative to basketball.
TV Junkie: Olyphant in New FX Series; 'Chuck' & 'Heroes' Season Finales
The AP has an interesting story today on local newscasters trimming their staff despite reports stating that local news is becoming a ratings leader compared to national news broadcasts. Having technology that allows only 1 or 2 people to go to a location shoot should mean more coverage, because that's what people want, not the same amount of coverage with less people.
TV Junkie: 'Alaska Week' on Discovery; Cancellations for TNT & Showtime
The Discovery Channel has put together a ton of programming it has dubbed "Alaska Week" and it begins tonight at 9pm with "Arctic Roughnecks". Tomorrow will feature the season premiere of "Deadliest Catch" and we will have an interview with Captain Keith of the Wizard for you!
TV Junkie: Jimmy Fallon Premieres in 'Late Night'; 'Saving Grace' Winter Premiere
Tonight marks a big debut in late night TV with the start of "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon". While we were concerned with the departure of Conan O'Brien from "Late Night", we think he can be very successful in the earlier slot. Jimmy Fallon, at 34 years-old, will be bringing some youth to the time slot, although both Carson Daly and Conan O'Brien were younger when they started their stints on late night television.
TV Junkie: Jimmy Fallon Starts 'Late Night' Vlog; New Web Program from Rob Corddry; NBC Hints at Cutting Nights
To prepare us for his upcoming takeover of NBC's "Late Night", Jimmy Fallon will be posting vlog entries at latenightwithjimmyfallon.com at 12:30am ET.
TV Junkie: Monday
In case you missed the Sarah Palin rap on "SNL", you have another chance to see it via NBC online. Gotta love Amy Poehler rocking the joint even at 14 months pregnant.
TV Junkie: Monday
Everyone is in a tizzy about The Wire coming to a close yesterday - it's one of the few shows that decided to go out while it was on top so kudos to them. The TV Junkie is barely keeping his head above water with the deluge of new shows coming out in the next week, tonight it's Julianna Margulies' return to the little screen with Canterbury's Law (that's a mouthful, say: Julianna Margulies in Canterbury's Law 10x fast). Stay tuned for more shows this week, including the fabulous Lewis Black (right) in Lewis Black's Root of All Evil which premieres on Wednesday at 10:30pm - I hope he does "the finger thing" a lot.
TV Junkie: Monday
No deal in the writer's strike before Xmas folks, so we might just have to entertain ourselves. Monday's looking sparse - oh wait, was I supposed to highlight dreck like K-Ville, Samantha Who?, and Deal or No Deal? No thanks. 6:00pm Larry King Live CNN - Relatively new Los Angelino Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham is the interviewee today. Will there be more talk about her hubbie's giant schlong? Or about how she sleeps naked with...
TV Junkie: Monday
The WGA and the producers are back at the negotiating table, hopefully they will catch the breaks that they need so that the collapse of Western civilization is averted. In a desperate attempt to avoid family time over the holiday, I managed to watch season one of Showtime's Dexter and my optimism for the future of mankind was restored. I missed Dexter when it premiered last year but was happy to cover the zany stunts...
This Week in Theatre
The best of LA’s theatre scene is celebrated with the 2007 LA Stage Alliance’s Ovation Awards on Monday night at the Orpheum Theater downtown. The ceremony honor Annette Bening and will be hosted by Neil—wait for it—Patrick Harris (fans of How I Met Your Mother might appreciate that one). Tickets ($40, $80 and $150) to the show are available to the general public. If those ticket prices are too steep, then check out our...
TV Junkie: Monday
Unless you are a hardcore devotee of the 3-camera sitcom format (How I Met Your Mother, etc.) then Monday has somehow turned into NBC night. Check out late night offerings as you can while the writer's strike gains traction - Letterman and Conan have good guests. 8:00pm Chuck NBC - TV Junkie 8:00pm Pick 9:00pm Carol Burnett: A Woman of Character PBS - For some she's an annoyance, for many she's a classic, if you're...
TV Junkie: Monday
A lotta hungover people in Boston today, no doubt - and with that drama, who the eff was watching the GOP debate? I don't really care about that much this week other than the Damages finale tomorrow night, but first things first. Late night's a bust with almost 100% repeats tonight. Did you catch last night's Curb Your Enthusiasm? Hilarious that Larry David's fictional wife is also leaving him - brilliant too. 8:00pm Chuck NBC...
TV Junkie: Monday
Some cool stuff heard over the weekend: Stephen Colber(t) is writing a column for the New York Times. Jimmy Kimmel will be doing 2 shows a day, 1 on each coast: Live With Regis and Kelly in NYC in the AM, and then Jimmy Kimmel LIVE from LA in the PM. The insanity starts on 10/22 and goes for a week. 8:00pm Chuck NBC - This still feels pretty new and engaging although they are...
TV Junkie: Monday Night Picks - Beware the Onslaught of New Shows
8-11pm CBS - All new episodes of: How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory (series premiere!), Two and a Half Men, Rules of Engagement, CSI: Miami 8:00pm The War PBS - I think PBS completely effed this up by taking this great series head-to-head against a week of season and series premieres on the networks and cable. They should have shown it last week or the week before where there wasn't jack-shit...
TV Junkie: Monday's Picks
The only thing this week means to me is that It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia premieres on Thursday. I've seen some previews and goddam if that shit isn't funny. 9:00pm Dateline NBC - Sensationalist exploitation of the Connecticut home invasion by 2 ex-cons that left a woman and her 2 daughters dead and her husband badly beaten. 10:00pm Saving Grace TNT - For lack of anything better (Dr. 90210 anyone??) I guess the only choice...
TV Junkie: 'Heroes', '24', 'DWTS', all winding up/down; Shatner on Conan (not literally)
A Word or 146: It was fun to watch Molly Shannon on SNL. In general it was a great broadcast and she was just as funny now as she was then but who could really care about Linkin Park? Less fun is reading about the continuing poor decision-making by the networks in their upcoming program development. NBC is trying to cover all it's bases milking Heroes, their only good horse in the running, by creating...
TV Junkie: 'Heroes' at Full-Throttle; Mike Myers on Leno; Peet on Conan (he wishes)
A Word or 89(approx): One thing I didn't mention over the weekend was Sunday's SNL In the '90s because I thought it woudl suck. I was right. First, why did it take them 7 years to come up with this 2 hours of dreck? Second, the equal emphasis of the (pathetic) music acts and the comedy was a mistake - the show is an hour and a half with 2 songs in it, the...
TV Junkie: Conan in SF for the Week; Dinosaur, Jr. on Letterman; De La Hoya on Leno
A Word or 36: 60 Minutes was interesting what with alleged ratfink George Tenet telling us all the things he should have been telling us years ago, when it would have mattered, when we could have done something about it. Tonight - Monday - April 30th, 2007 D'backs @ Dodgers (PRIME, 7:00 p.m.) How I Met Your Mother/The New Adventures of Old Christine/Two and a Half Men/The King of Queens (CBS, 8-10:00 p.m.) Two...
TV Junkie: Oscars Hangover; 'Daily Show' and 'Colbert' Back From Hiatus
A Word Or 46: The Oscars blew its big TV wad all over the place so let's get on with our lives. The Daily Show and Colbert Report are back from hiatus -- did they think they were doing the Oscars again? What's their excuse? Lots of new TV tonight. Tonight - Monday - February 26th, 2007 Lakers @ Jazz (KCAL, 6:00 p.m.) Bobcats @ Clippers (PRIME, 7:30 p.m.) How I Met Your Mother/The...
TV Junkie: No Jon Stewart or Colber(t) But We Have New Episodes of 'Heroes' and '24' - Choose Your Poison
A Word or 14: Supposedly the Daily Show and Stephen Colbert have the week off - how dare they?! I may have to resort to watching PBS, or, godhelpus, the local news. Today - Monday - February 19th, 2007 The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (TCM, 5:00 p.m.) John Ford's '62 classic with James Stewart, John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Edmond O'Brien, Lee Van Cleef, John Carradine and practically everyone else who was alive at...
Can't Meredith Tread Water?
You can tell it's a TV "sweeps" month because shows are pulling out all the cliffhangers, disasters and stunt casting tricks in the Tinseltown TV book. Eric Delko almost dies on CSI: Miami. Emmitt Smith shows up on How I Met Your Mother. Fine. Whatever. But last night's airing of Grey's Anatomy really takes the cake for asking a lot of an intelligent TV audience. Meredith Grey (hence Grey's Anatomy) drowns while working on...
TV Junkie: 'Heroes' and '24' Deliver; Lots of New Episodes Tonight
A Word or 116: So I missed the first 10 minutes of the Grammys which meant that I missed the effing Police. I punished myself by watching the rest of the Grammys: a collection of posers I will never go see perform and whose songs I've never heard and will never care to hear. 24 is back with a 2 hour allotment but my understanding is that I'm not supposed to watch 24 anymore...
TV Junkie: David Spade on CBS; Sam Spade on TCM; Emo Alert: Fall Out Boy on Letterman
A Word or 108: Superbowl Redux: I found myself wandering over to the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet a couple times yesterday, and that isn't a bad thing -- the kitten halftime show was excellent. Almost all the Superbowl commercials had been leaked onto the web a week ago so there was nothing new there. I still can't understand why, with all those professionals there, that it would take almost Prince's entire (fantastic) set...
TV Junkie: Another Hour of '24'; 'Heroes' & 'Studio 60' Are Back
A Word or 80: Spent the weekend in Canada, my first visit, in the province of Quebec to be exact. I found the radio programming to be innovative and excellent but television sucked. I'm sure there's some good programmes (please give me cred for the spelling) out there but in a first glance/overview kind of perspective it was wanting. Dear Canuck friends, don't take it personally, American TV sucks for the most part as...
TV Junkie: National College Football Champtionship; Colbert & Stewart Back From Vacation
A Word or 39-ish: So whadyathinkof "the Apprentice: LA"? Was it LA-flavored enough for you or did it perpetuate the idiotic stereotypes all over again? It might have been better if they had manage to quarantine that thing to the East coast. Tonight - Monday - January 8th, 2007 Ohio State Buckeyes vs. the Florida Gators (FOX, 5:30 p.m.) This is it, the "BCS National Championship" football game Oilers @ Kings (Fox Sports, 7:30...
TV Junkie: Emo Rockers Take Over Late Night TV; da Bears on Monday Night Football; Supersized "House"
Tonight - Monday "Breakheart Pass" (TCM, 5:00 p.m.) Charles Bronson starts off Crime/Mystery night on TCM. This is followed by "Murder On the Orient Express", "Sherlock Holmes in Terror By Night", and "The Narrow Margin" "Monday Night Football" (ESPN, 5:30 p.m.) da Bears @ Rams "NBA Basketball" (PRIME, 7:30 p.m.) Spurs @ Clippers "How I Met Your Mother" (CBS, 8:00 p.m.) Xmas episode followed by new episodes of everything else on CBS Monday night....
TV Junkie: Will Seinfeld Talk About Kramer's Racist Laugh Factory Explosion Tonight on Letterman?
Monday Night "Monday Night Football" (ESPN, 5:30 p.m.) Giants @ Jags "College Football" (PRIME, 7:00 p.m.) UCLA @ Arizona State "Talk to Her" (IFC, 7:30 p.m.) Pedro Almodovar's flick about people falling in love with comatose patients. I had a relationship like that once. "How I Met Your Mother/The Class/Two and a Half Men/The New Adventures of Old Christine/CSI: Miami" (CBS, 8:00-11:00 p.m.) All new episodes. "Prison Break" (Fox, 8 p.m. EST) New episode....
