The 405 freeway may be headed to three years of this kind of stuff, but the 10 and 605 freeways are getting some love, too. A $175 million project, expected to debut in winter of 2012, will bring carpool lanes in each direction of the 10 Freeway between the 605 and Puente Avenue. Caltrans warning to expect lane, ramp and even some full freeway closures through Saturday morning, mostly along the 605 this week. Also, $165 million worth of pavement work on the 10 will prompt various lane closures from downtown to Boyle Heights and a little beyond. Full details for both projects are after below.
Nighttime Freeway Closures on the 10, 605 Freeways This Week
10 Fwy Commuters, Beware: Full Closures Expected Next Week
For those who travel the 10 freeway in the wee hours of the morning, take note. Caltrans will be closing westbound lanes between Puente Avenue and the 605 Freeway (map) all next week. Specifically, between 11:59 p.m. and 4 a.m. Monday through Friday. It's for the $114-million HOV lane project, which is expected to be finished in winter 2012. When done, the car pool lanes will whisk passengers between the 605 and Puente Avenue in both directions.
Are NorCal Car Pools Lanes Better than SoCal's?
In today's city council session, there was a big discussion regarding congestion pricing on the 110 Freeway which would basically let non-hybrid solo car uses use the car pool lane for a price. Councilwoman Janice Hahn, who voted for the measure (and it did pass), had a concern about the lanes because they bottleneck, in her opinion, due to the inability to get in and out of the lanes whenever people want to. She wants to look into their current effectiveness.
Carpool Lanes on I-5 Open Friday
Good news for those who come into and leave Los Angeles everyday via the 5 freeway from the north county: those carpool lanes that have been under construction for a while are opening Friday. The lanes are a first for the 5 freeway in Los Angeles County and is part of a larger scheme to go carpool lane crazy in that part of town. Future lanes will connect the project to the 118 and 170 arteries with plans for a direct carpool connector at the I-5/14 Interchange and a lane down the 170 to the 134.
