"When the team arrived, they saw that CPR was already in progress by someone at the home. The person not breathing was transported to UCLA Medical Center and remains there." He was taken to UCLA Medical Center just a few minutes away from the home.

The California Department of Public Health announced today that thirteen hospitals have been fined $25,000 per violation "after a determination that the facilities’ noncompliance with licensing requirements has caused, or was likely to cause, serious injury or death to patients." Of the thirteen statewide, nine of those are within the Los Angeles region, ten if you count San Diego in the mix. Is one of them yours? Check below for the list of SoCal hospitals and what they did. These fines stem from incidents in 2007 and 2008:

After a two week break, the Los Angeles City Council is back to business. Today, they passed two motions of note. They extended the the year long moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries for another six months (remember last year when the DEA raided a dispensary in Hollywood as council voted on this?). The city is looking to draft regulations covering the facilities and the city attorney's office needs more time to create a policy "that would prevent abuses while still ensuring that such facilities are available to legitimate medical patients," according to the LA Times.

Dave Matthews Band sax player, LeRoi Moore, died earlier this afternoon at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center "from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia," according to a statement given to TMZ.

85-year-old fashion critic Richard Blackwell, best known for his scathing annual list of worst-dressed celebrities, is reportedly in an undisclosed Los Angeles-area hospital and has been unconscious since Tuesday. The information came via his partner, Robert Spencer, who declined to state from what illness Blackwell is suffering. His most recent "Worst Dressed" list was published in January of this year, and included mostly pop stars such as Victoria Beckham, Avril Lavigne, Amy Winehouse, Fergie, and Kelly Clarkson, with the oddball pick of former Little House on the Prairie actress Alison Arngrim as #10. LAist interviewed Mr. Blackwell when this year's list came out, too!

An event this past weekend was put together by the local lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community to honor California's Speaker of the California State Assembly, Karen Bass. The job of Speaker, which Bass recently got, is pretty much the second most powerful political job in the state with her current top duty is to balance the budget, which is no easy task.

How do you fix the state budget? You take away money from two of the most important and already-lacking services in the state: transit and early education programs via voter approved set aside money for those type of projects. Not only that, money for local governments could be taken away too (that means less money to do the dirty work of the city and county such as hospitals). Of course, within his first hour of office in 2003, Governor Schwarzenegger repealed the tripling of the car tax, something that was worth $4 billion to the state.

Update: The outcome of this incident has been updated here.

Last year in May, Edith Isabel Rodriguez died at Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital. Her death became national headlines because Rodriguez was dying (literally throwing up blood on the floor) in the waiting room as nurses and other hospital staff continued to ignore her as they walked by. Rodriguez's husband, Jose Prado, and another person in the waiting room called 911 explaining that she was in need of help. But dispatchers refused saying she was already a hospital.

Thirteen hospitals statewide were fined on Wednesday by the California Department of Public Health. In total, five from the Los Angeles area were cited: Pomona Valley Medical Center, Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance and Los Angeles County Olive View- UCLA Medical Center in LA County and Garden Grove Hospital and Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital in Orange County, according to wire reports. Reasons varied from dumb mistakes to deadly ones:

It all started in the media with Britney Spears. Staff at UCLA Medical snuck an unauthorized look at her medical records which led to the hospital looking into firing thirteen employees, suspending six others and disciplining six physicians. And UCLA admitted to the LA Times this wasn't the first time staff had spied on Spears' records leading to sackings. It happened in 2005 when she gave birth to her son Sean Preston at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital.

For those of you who might not be familiar with the story, this is a tale of suspicion, revenge, and MySpace gone terribly wrong. In 2006, Lori Drew of Dardenne, Missouri, invented a fake profile on MySpace pretending to be a young boy named "Josh". Her intent was to use "Josh" to romance and keep tabs on her daughter's ex-best-friend, Megan Meier, who Drew believed was harassing her daughter via MySpace. "Josh" also "friended" Megan's other MySpace friends, and even worked in tandem with one of the teenage "friends" who had figured out the ruse. On October 16, 2006, after "Josh" dumped her, and her MySpace "friends" turned on her, Megan's parents found her hanged with a belt in her bedroom closet. Megan, who suffered from depression, died the next morning in the hospital. She had commited suicide. She was only 13 years old.
