In the early days of Hollywood, one of the spoils of the wealthy who built their homes tucked into the area's plentiful hills was the option for seclusion. Many of the homes were built into the hills and accessible by staircases and pathways. In the era of the automobile, anyone navigating the hills behind the wheel knows how steep and precarious the ascents and descents can be--not to mention the fine art of parking. But take away the heavy machinery and strap on a good pair of shoes and you can slide into what feels like another world (and get in a workout!) when you explore the hidden staircases of Hollywood Heights.
It's not the nicest way to wake up on what is a holiday for many: A large tree fell over during the rainstorm this morning in Laurel Canyon, "knocking down three power poles, blocking Wonderland Avenue and interrupting electricity to about 1,700 customers," according to the Daily News.
Imagine MTV’s “The Real World” on crack. Now imagine “The Real World” with a crack hangover. That’s almost VH1’s “Sober House,” the “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” follow-up.

The LAist tipster who saw something from his Beverly Hills office window wasn't the only person to see the fireball. While few reports came in the Los Angeles area (the LAFD told LAist there were zero 911 calls), most calls came in from Riverside and San Bernardino counties. A San Bernardino County dispatch supervisor told the LA Times that "fire crews in Barstow and on I-15 near Stateline came up on the radio and reported an object in the sky moving very fast across the northern sky and described it as yellowish green in color with streaks of debris. It looked like it burned up before it hit the ground." The FAA reports no planes missing and officials searching for any sign of impact are not finding anything yet.
Update: More witnesses see the fireball, read the update here | From the LAist Inbox: Legit or For Real? A reader writes in... "I work in Beverly Hills on the 8th floor of our building, and I was talking to a co-worker when I saw a massive orange light fly West to Northeast over the Hollywood hills. It was like a shooting star but ridiculously close. Am I the only one who saw this? Am I going crazy here? No one believes me at the office and I’m getting pissed." It happened around 10:40 a.m. he said in a follow up e-mail. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, nothing unusual has been reported.
As you drive "over the hill" from the Valley to Hollywood along Laurel Canyon Blvd., there's a sign there asking for donations to save some plots of land from development. No, it isn't a citizens' group or a non-profit for wilderness, it's a government agency. "Donated funds needed immediately to save these six acres under option by part agency," it reads.

After reports that 10 members of congress, including California Senator Dianne Feinstein, received letters and photos in the mail that possibly claimed responsibility for yesterday's bombing in Times Square, the FBI did the obvious thing: go to the man's house who was listed on the return address. Nothing turned up when they questioned the man. "We're continuing to investigate, but right now there is no evidence linking the individual being questioned to the incident in New York or the letters themselves," Eimiller said to KNBC.
Forget Malibu. Forget the Hollywood Hills. Forget Mulholland Drive. Downtown is the new hot LZ for A-list celebrities, at least for the beloved Johnny Depp. He looked and bought into the $2-million property six months ago, but still hasn't moved into the Art Deco Eastern Columbia Building on Broadway, which has reportedly been having problems selling all the units. To that, the LA Times gives you the hard sell:
It's not too late to become one of Depp's neighbors. There is a furnished corner unit in the building listed at about $1.8 million. It's on the 12th floor and is described as light-filled with an open floor plan and high ceilings. The unit has a bronze and iron entry gate, storage for 112 bottles of wine, flat-screen TVs, a jukebox, a vintage-style safe and city views. The 1,827-square-foot loft was decorated by designer Jim Hughes.Continue reading "Depp to Downtown: Johnny Goes Urban, Kinda"

"Didn't you all feel really cool tonight driving over here?" Jeremy Townsend, founder of the underground supper club Ghetto Gourmet, posed this question to a diverse group of about forty foodies, all sprawled out on cushions on the floor of a beautiful Venice home. And as we opened our bottles of red wine, stretched out our legs, and gazed down at a beautifully crafted shooter glass filled with warm squash soup, we had to...

Somehow "The Tonight Show" scored a trifecta of controversy tonight as they were able to book the most punk rock of punk rock bands, the most conservative member of Congress, and the wackiest Scientologist all to appear on its air in the same hour. Tonight the Sex Pistols, Ron Paul, and Tom Cruise will all be in Burbank to tape the late night chat show. Strangely, whatever wire service the LA Daily News used...
Halloween Earaiser in K-Town to benefit Eric Borzi.
Forest Lawn in the Hollywood Hills has a variety of gardens, stained glass and art exhibits that attract a lot of attention. However, the Court of Liberty and the Birth of Liberty Mosaic don't hold much interest for me as a photographer. I am touched by the juxtoposition of beauty and sorrow in the marble statuary. I find peace in the serene faces, and I marvel at the way people are always able to...
