As the early crowd began to show up at bars in Hollywood last night, a few blocks away at Highland and Sunset at Hollywood High School one of the 17 or so LAPD Airships was making an emergency landing on the football field due to mechanical problems around 9:40 p.m. It landed safely and no injuries were reported according to Cecil Manresa, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman. The LAPD reports that the helicopter is still......

Vitals details in the killings of two South LA residents who were found shot to death in their 11th Ave apartment remain unknown. The LAPD was notified late Monday afternoon of gunshots heard, and soon after discovered the bodies of Shelton Sumerall, 32, and Monica Youngblood, 23, both of whom suffered fatal shots to their heads. The motive and a shooting suspect have not been determined. A Van Nuys man was stabbed yesterday when he......

A student was shot in the leg across from Hollywood High this morning at Highland and Sunset according to the LA Times. As to a suspect, because of contradictory accounts told by the teen himself, some authorities think he actually shot himself in the leg accidentally, but no weapon was found at the scene. "We haven't had anything like this in a long, long time," said Principal Fonna Bishop. Photo by guamafro via Flickr......

San Gennaro (also known as Januarius -- yes, as in the month) was one of those fantastic early Christian martyrs who suffered incomprehensible tortures and survived inexplicable violence under equally fantastic Roman persecution. He was tossed into the flames but did not burn; the ever-resourceful Romans then tried to feed him to wild beasts, but (le sigh) the animals laid down at his feet instead of devouring him. Exhausted and frustrated, the Romans beheaded......

One of our very favorite Los Angeles historical moments is when Jay Adams and his Dogtown cohort bombed the Bicknell hill in south Santa Monica, inventing modern skateboarding and changing the face of SoCal sports, culture, and fashion. (How many pairs of slip-on Vans do you own?) Salute their totally radical contribution today, and celebrate national Go Skateboarding Day. Get that old Bones Brigade board out of your closet. Roll on down to any......

The Woman's Club of Hollywood is sponsoring an event tonight, The Stand-Up Chicks, with proceeds benefiting Hurricane Katrina relief. The line-up of over 10 female comedians features Stephanie Whang, our friend Maia Madison singing "All The Good Men Are Gay," and other quirky and divine tidbits of the LA stand-up scene. This fundraiser, originally intended to help support the college fund of a graduating senior at Hollywood High School, has now been expanded to......

It's shearing season for the city's palm trees. Crews are taking advantage of the sunny weather to trim the palm tree beards, which are getting kinda scraggly. The tree pictured above is the first to get topped on the grounds of Hollywood High at Highland and Sunset. Is it us or does the little tree now look like the Muppet Beaker, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew's assistant?......

The LAUSD is set to re-evaluate a program that allows undercover cops to pose as students in order to bust student drug dealers. The School Buy program has come under fire because of questions concerning its fairness and effectiveness. Critics question whether or not serious offenders are being targeted, particularly citing the rise in the number of special education students being expelled because of offenses related to the program. "Special-education students made up about......
