2010 KROQ Weenie Roast, Verizon Amp. 06/05/10

             + 15 more

If one took a quick glance at the lineup for this year's installment of KROQ's annual early summer bash, the Weenie Roast, you might think you had stepped into a time machine (Hot Tub or Delorean, your choice) and were blasted back to the Mid-Nineties. With Hole, Stone Temple Pilots, Devo and Sublime all at the top of the bill, nostalgia was the name of the game at this Weenie Roast. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Hole, Princeton, We Barbarians, Mount Righteous

Tonight In Rock: Hole, Princeton, We Barbarians, Mount Righteous

Tonight LA-bred alternative rock outfit Hole, fronted by the illustrious mess that is Courtney Love, will be kicking off a two-night stint at the Henry Fonda Music Box. Long Beach-based indie rockers We Barbarians are poised to take on the Bootleg Theater with none other than female-fronted, bicoastal indie rock quintet, "both figuratively and technically," All Wrong and the Plans Change. And, lastly, multi-member Texan indie pop outfit Mount Righteous will be headlining an impromptu gig in the outskirts of Downtown at TOW (UPDATE: Moved to 6th St. Warehouse). But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch local indie rock act Eagle Rock-bred indie rock outfit Princeton (LAist Interview). LAist favorites, local electro-pop singer-songwriter Active Child is slated to kick things off. more ›

SXSW 2010 Through Our Lens: Day Two

             + 20 more

Ok, party people. I've got two words for you: Superchunk (and) Hole. Showing the new kids how things are done, both bands rocked the house in their entirety. Even Courtney declaring, midway through her 1 am set, “Listen, folks. I’m an elderly person. It’s 1:30 in the morning. I just want to get my blow job on and go to bed,” couldn’t detract from her screaming through a ballsy rendition of a "Doll Parts." And Superchunk’s energy was so frenetic that it instantly brought me back to their three-night run at the Fillmore over 10 years ago, with Mac’s bounce as pogo-y as ever. As for bands I haven’t followed for a decade or more, French Miami, An Horse, Bear Hands, and Rumspringa all pulled me in from the street for an enjoyable listen. Surfer Blood, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and the xx all gave good performances and rounded out my Friday at SXSW - don’t forget to check out Molly Bergen’s recap for a more in-depth perusal of the good, the bad, and the downright ridiculous. As for me, I’ve got to get to GWAR. Pics to follow - if I survive it, that is. more ›

Hole - "Malibu"

Fires in Malibu are nothing new. But tonight while procrastinating we thought we'd revisit the old Hole tune - Courtney's last really great hit(?) - and we were sorta stunned by all the fire references in the lyrics and in the video. It's something we don't remember being so prevalent even though it was on the album cover, etc. But still, it's sorta eerie seeing it today. "Malibu" was the second single off Hole's... more ›

Tongue and Groove @ The Hotel Cafe, 1/28

Tongue and Groove @ The Hotel Cafe, 1/28

Tongue and Groove, a monthly spoken word/music happening around town, took place tonight at The Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. Coordinated by Conrad Romo, who LA Weekly called "a friend to creatures both great and small", this event included readings from both unknown LA writers, and those who've been around the block, namely Mike the Poet, who has done over one hundred readings in and around LA this past year. He loves Los Angeles and isn't afraid to say it. more ›

Courtney Love @ Virgin Megastore 11/7

Courtney Love @ Virgin Megastore 11/7

LAist gets invited to a lot of cool events. We say no to way too many. It's not that we say no, we just never end up where we probably should be. When we were invited to the Courtney Love book signing at the Virgin on Sunset we were not only there, we were early, we had our batteries charged, we had extra batteries, we had voted, we were Ready. And secretly we hoped... more ›

Courtney Love to Sign Her Memoirs Tonight & Tomorrow

Courtney Love to Sign Her Memoirs Tonight & Tomorrow

She's Miss World, Mrs. Cobain, Momma Bean, America's Sweetheart, and the Widow Courtney. While some of the punk and grunge icons of days gone by have faded out, Courtney Love's fire still rages despite the fact that so many just want her to sit still and shut up. But shutting up is one thing Ms. Love will never do. Thankfully. Just the opposite, in fact, as her memoirs Dirty Blonde: The Diaries of Courtney... more ›

Friday Fluff - OJ, Hilton, Richie, MTV, Hole

MTV's Real World Denver reveals its new cast: two blacks, a gay, two sexually-charged chicks, and a Raiderette. In it's 18th season, the Real World seems to be living up to its barely legal aspirations - popbytes OJ offered $3.5 mil to write a book about what if he had killed his wife and the waiter. Go Trojans! - MSNBC OMG an actor is gay? And he's not a Republican Congressperson? - Defamer A... more ›
