California's 32nd Congressional District seat is now vacant thanks to its previous holder, Hilda Solis, going to Washington to assume the post of U.S. labor secretary. Now "Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has scheduled a primary election for May 19," to fill the seat, reports the Pasadena Star-News.
“I am confident that Hilda Solis will turn the many challenges we face into many opportunities for the American people. As Secretary, she will continue to promote policies that will invigorate our economy, protect our jobs, and retrain our work force," California Senator Barbara Boxer said today on the confirmation. "She will work for a sustainable energy future, which is going to mean lots of jobs and new technologies. She will ensure safe working conditions. She will enforce fairly the wage and hour laws we have on the books She will protect against worker discrimination. She will strengthen the middle class."
San Gabriel Valley Congresswoman Hilda Solis is President Barack Obama's choice for Labor secretary. But a republican senator is using a secret hold--more formally known as a senatorial hold--to delay a vote on her confirmation. It's apparently because of her "support for 'card check' legislation aimed at facilitating union organization and another bill regarding pay-discrimination, and for non-responsive answers during her confirmation hearing," the Pasadena Star News reported via the Washington Post. If she's ultimately rejected, a group of hopefuls eyeing her seat are going to be disappointed.
President-elect Barack Obama has asked local congresswoman Hilda Solis, the Democrat who represents the 32nd District, which includes parts of Los Angeles, East LA and the cities of Azusa, Baldwin Park, Covina, Duarte, El Monte, Irwindale, Monterey Park, Rosemead, South El Monte, and West Covina. Now speculation has begun regarding who will take her place.
Adding to the mix of Californians tapped to work in the Obama administration, Congresswoman Hilda Solis has reportedly been asked to become the Labor Secretary. Environmentalists may be excited to see yet another green bean join Obama since Solis authored the 2007 Green Jobs Act, which "provides federal money for 'green collar' job training, 'such as energy efficiency retrofit and service, green building construction, and solar panel installation,'" says the Wall Street Journal. The act could create as manny as 3 million jobs over the next 10 years. Solis currently represents parts of Los Angeles, East LA and the cities of Azusa, Baldwin Park, Covina, Duarte, El Monte, Irwindale, Monterey Park, Rosemead, South El Monte, and West Covina.
