Great Northern Sleepy Eepee Contest

Great Northern Sleepy Eepee Contest

I hate contests. Hate. LAist doesn't need them, lots of you don't appreciate them, it's not what big blogs do, and we have quietly become a big blog in this town. But I love Great Northern. Love. I first saw them at SXSW in March, and it's been nice to watch them get on the cover of the Weekly (and the drummer at that), and it's great to see them continue to make good... more ›

Austinist Outs Over 100 More SXSW Bands

Austinist Outs Over 100 More SXSW Bands

Our pals over at Austinist have been doing a bang-up job of Internet sleuthing, Googling, and MySpacing to confirm over 500 bands that will play SXSW even though the Austin music festival refuses to cooperate. After taking last week off because we were sure SXSW would release their master plan, we now return as there seems to be no end in sight to the band list embargo. Many indie labels and some marquee acts... more ›

Lemon Sun, Mezzanine Owls, Robbers on High Street @ Echo 1/27

Last night I found myself deep into the hipster scene at the Echo. The usual Silver Lake crowd was there, along with a smattering of underage Bel Air brace-faces. After braving the rain, I caught the last two songs of the Mezzanine Owls, an Angeleno band with a solid following. After performing a Husker Du cover, the Mezzanine Owls' last song sounded like Early Flaming Lips a la Clouds Taste Metallic with that velvety... more ›
