In yesterday's LAist interview with Hillary Clinton, we had to ask about public transportation. Clinton said she would increase federal funding for public transit by $1.5 billion per year, link funding to local land use policies that encourage mixed-use and transit-oriented development (discouraging sprawl) and invest $1 billion into intercity passenger rail (think high speed rail from Los Angeles to San Francisco, or more locally, the MagLev concept from Orange County to Las Vegas). Speaking......

Yesterday we wrote about the high speed car chase that started in Burbank, got hot as it sped up 5 at speeds over 100 mph, then ended on the 138 eastbound. The pursuit ended somewhat anti-climatically when the driver ran out of gas, pulled over, and surrendered without incident. Thankfully KCAL anchor David Gonzales brought a little funny to the letdown of an ending. Gonzales of course being the gentleman who last month delightfully......

Núñez represents downtown Los Angeles, to the south of, and East LA in the state assembly. It is rumored he wants to run for Mayor. It is not like Democrat Fabian Núñez, Speaker of the California State Assembly, is some bogus politician with bad intentions and total self-serving motives. I am not going to argue with him for looking into universal preschool, high speed rail and global warming solutions for California; in fact, I......

It's better than winning the lottery. LAist is running three contests right now: a pair of tickets for Bright Eyes with the LA Philharmonic for this Saturday, a pair of VIP passes to LA Weekly's Detour Festival on October 6 and a pair of tickets for next The Crystal Method at The Roxy next tuesday. Speaking of Detour, the line-ups and stages were announced today Hopefully, citizens won't get cheated as much anymore: the......

The Communications Workers of America released their initial (small) data sample revealing the molasses-slow pace of U.S. broadband connectivity. And tech-savvy, forward-thinking California clocks slower-than-average speeds. Blaming your new AT&T or Time-Warner or Verizon or Al Gore simply isn't going to fix the Internet, the union warns. Even Canada ranks significantly higher in broadband speeds. Take the speed test, play with the interactive data, or grab the PDF. Hmm. Maybe if we just just......

Patrolling the mean streets of LA is a rough job. Gang warfare, high speed car chases, possible terrorism at LAX, (and avoiding the drunk driving of Paris, Linds, and Nicole) are daily dangers of being in law enforcement at the LAPD. Simply put, you have a bad day at work - paper cut, fight with a cohort, bad review from a boss, you end up with hurt feelings. You have a bad day at......

As the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) nears decision day on the U.S. candidate city for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, organizers of the Los Angeles 2016 bid today joined Las Vegas civic leaders to detail the role of the city and Sam Boyd Stadium in the bid, highlighting a program that would include eight to 12 preliminary round soccer/futbol competitions. You know, if LA wins the Olympic bid, would this push for that high......

Tonight, the Mayor's office announced that they will announce the LA WiFi Initiative tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. They say that the network "will be the single largest citywide-network in the country providing wireless, cost-effective, high speed internet access." How fast will it be? Will it reach the far sides of the city such as Sunland-Tujunga, San Pedro, Pacific Palisades and East LA? Will it have ads to supplement cost like in San Francisco and......

When Mr. Williams took his new Corvette into a Nor Cal dealership for a simple antenna repair, he had the foresight to imagine an employee taking his whip on a speedy joyride. For that reason, he instructed the dealer not to drive his Vette off the lot. Well one employee did anyway. And not only that, he spun it out on a turn at high speed while doped up on Codeine, causing over $15,000 in......

Over the weekend, the anonymous "scribes" at Martini Republic voiced a complaint common to many: "The City of LA’s continued shakedown of its own citizens continues apace. The foto-tickets cost about $365, and are very tough to fight (a day off work, a drive to Compton), even though cops snicker when they see that one has popped up in your life: 'Those lights are almost always wrong,' they say." Will someone explain to me......

Driving along Riverside last night, a car weaving through traffic sped by at a high speed. Westbound, it crossed Coldwater Cyn. (remember last week's incident off Coldwater?) and went out of control, spun, careened onto the curb and slammed into a parked car, pushing it 25 feet into a telephone pole. Now facing East due to the spin, the car put the pedal to the medal and proceeded to hit the curb on the......

Today, CBS 2 reports that Americans are more impatient than ever, ending their story with "the more money and education you have, the more likely you are to lose your patience." Here in L.A. the obvious comes to mind and we have to ask: are we really impatient, or do we just enjoy the thrill of high speed, no matter how silly or dangerous it is? While natives and veteran transplants might be more......

Was anyone else watching ABC7 News 11 PM broadcast last night? We're still pondering why --in a day involving 2 high speed police car chases, Anne Bancroft's death and the arrest of two California men with possible links to al-Qaida -- ABC producers decided the top story should be a report about local documentarians now missing in the Namibian desert. Perhaps ABC network told local affiliates to tailor their top news story to tie-in......

Just a few hours after we mentioned KABC's new helicopter yesterday, they were able to take it out and use it in the coverage of a high speed chase. The chase ended with the fatal shooting of the suspect. Two stations covered the event but calblog notes that with the new camera you could watch the tires disintegrate, the suspect talk on his cell phone and several other details you hadn't been able to......

The Daily Bruin ledes with a story with no pictures but a warning: Do Not Use Any Water for Drinking! The entire campus and much of West LA is without drinkable tap water after a pipe burst near the university yesterday. While UCLA covers all the precautions being taken to protect its students, the Los Angeles Times notes that it's going to be hard to get breakfast this morning as bagel joints, doughnut stores......
