Tonight In Rock: Jefferson Starship, Sunset Junction, High Places, The Widow Babies

Tonight marks the second night of the 29th year of the annual street fair that we all hold dear to our hearts: the Sunset Junction Street Fair. Legendary San Franciscan psychedelic rock band Jefferson Starship are poised to grace the Greek Theatre for Heroes of Woodstock. And, lastly, LA-based rock outfit the Widow Babies will be ringing in their latest disc at the Echo. But we strongly suggest heading over to Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock to catch Brooklyn-based experimental pop act High Places.

Tonight In Rock: Chromeo, Fountains of Wayne, High Places, El Ten Eleven

Tonight Northampton-bred power pop act Fountains of Wayne (LAist Interview) will be concluding their two-night acoustic stint at Largo at the Coronet. Montreal-based electro pop duo Chromeo (LAist Review) are poised to play to a sold-out show at the Keyclub, just before heading into the studio. We're also just getting word that Chromeo has been added to the Love Grenades' show at the Roxy with Sam Sparro. And speaking of duos, experimental two-man band El Ten Eleven will be playing at the Silver Lake Lounge with Creedle, which features Pinback front man Rob Crow. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch the final duo we'll speak of, Brooklyn's own experimental rockers High Places. LA locals Hecuba are slated to open to the show.

Tonight In Rock: Rocco Deluca, Robert Francis, High Places, Olin & the Moon

It's Monday night in LA and that means the free residencies are aplenty. You've got local singer-songwriter Rocco Deluca (LAist Interview, Review) performing at Spaceland for the penultimate time. Last week's show found famed Québécois producer/musician Daniel Lanois joining Deluca onstage. LA's other prominent and prepossessing singer-songwriter Robert Francis (LAist Interview, Review) will be playing at the Echo for the third night this month as well. And, to complete the triumvirate, local alt-country outfit Olin & the Moon (LAist Interview) are poised to rock the Silver Lake Lounge. But we insist that you head all the way over to UCLA's Kerckhoff Grand Saloon to catch Brooklyn experimental buzz band High Places. LAist favorite Glasser will be kicking off the show.

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.

There are far too many good shows in LA tonight for any one music enthusiast. First and foremost, Bay Area indie rockers Facing New York and Orange-based Local Natives will be playing at the Troubadour. Sweden's own Graveyard will be performing at Spaceland with LA-based singer-songwriter Imaad Wasif. And Brooklyn-bred experimental rockers High Places will bring life to the drab interior of the Smell with LA locals Abe Vigoda and Baltimore-based Ponytail. It will be a night filled with endless sonic curiosity. But the hole-and-corner Pehrspace will play host to a loose-knit Durham-based collective, Daniel Hart's the Physics of Meaning. The violin virtuoso has lent his skills to St. Vincent, John Vanderslice and the Polyphonic Spree in times past. Now, Hart has a forthcoming sophomore effort, 2008's Snake Charmer & Destiny At The Stroke Of Midnight, to call his own. Don't miss out!
