TV Junkie: No Wait, Now The Fall TV Season Can Begin

Even though we've already had a couple dozen season premieres over the last two weeks, traditionally the "Fall season" doesn't begin until the week after the Emmys making tonight the launch pad for at least nine shows. --- "Heroes" fans, former or otherwise, are you looking forward to tonight's premiere? Anyone out there with a Sprint contract to look at the "exclusive" content? Enlighten us. --- Last night's Emmys had the highest viewership in three years but still lost out to football.

TV Junkie: NCAA; WHDH/Leno Redux

Perhaps it's because of the NCAA final, but it seems like there isn't a heck of a lot of TV news to report, all of late night TV tonight is repeats and no one has given us any cool leaks lately. Do you have the inside scoop on some TV tidbits? Other than former "Charlie's Angels" angel Farrah Fawcette's cancer spreading, of course.

TV Junkie: Where's 'LA Non-Stop'? Also, 'Curb' & 'Entourage' Coming to Basic Cable?

Today NBC launched a 24-hour cable channel in New York called "New York Non-Stop", replete with expanded news coverage, on-location stories, and interactive elements. When can LA expect the same investment?

TV Junkie: Jimmy Fallon Premieres in 'Late Night'; 'Saving Grace' Winter Premiere

Tonight marks a big debut in late night TV with the start of "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon". While we were concerned with the departure of Conan O'Brien from "Late Night", we think he can be very successful in the earlier slot. Jimmy Fallon, at 34 years-old, will be bringing some youth to the time slot, although both Carson Daly and Conan O'Brien were younger when they started their stints on late night television.

TV Junkie: Oscar Hangover; 'The Closer' + Other Season Finales Tonight

The spectacle that is the Academy Awards was wonderfully covered by LAist last night but the outcomes of the spectacle were very predictable. LAist was at the SAG awards last month and most of the big winners there, who were also nominated for Oscars, were winners last night.

TV Junkie: We Ask Amy Sedaris About Her Cameo On Tonight's 'The Closer' on TNT

We love Amy Sedaris and we love the fact that we can see her on something other than just a few minutes with David Letterman - this time as a somewhat wacky psychic on "The Closer" tonight @ 9:00pm on TNT.

TV Junkie: Post-Grammy Hangover; Prez Obama's 1st Press Conference; Clive Owen on Conan

Did any of you watch the Grammys? Did you enjoy it? OK, so you might actually like pop music but tell us what you specifically like about it. To us, the performances seem somewhat off and the staging heavy-handed. There was a 17% increase in viewership of the Grammys this year over last year with most folks watching during the 8:30-9:30pm hour.

NBC made sold $260 million worth of ads for yesterday's Super Bowl - forgetting the movie trailers (GI Joe?), what was your favorite ad?

TV Junkie: Super Bowl XLIII Weekend Edition

A lot of our sport fan/fiend friends are convinced that this Sunday's Super Bowl event will be a boring blow out - "the Cardinals will win how?" is oft heard. But for a lot of media dorks, ourselves included, the Super Bowl is all about the ads. We already know that GoDaddy and PETA have had their ads denied (as must have been planned for). Adweek's Barbara Lippert analyzes past Super Bowl commercial foibles as well as a list of all expected advertisers for XLIII. On Saturday, CBS also takes a trip down memory lane with a program on the "best" commercials of years past.

Interview: Cult Comedy Heroes 'Convoy'

While Alex Berg, Todd Fasen, and Alex Fernie would probably hesitate to call themselves heroes in any capacity (that is, unless they somehow saved a baby riding a puppy from getting run over by a truck full of hate and fireworks), the moniker does have a certain amount of applicability. In a staggeringly short amount of time, the three-man improv juggernaut named Convoy has risen through the ranks of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre (UCB), going from weekly improv battle competitors to big-name Thursday night draws. 44 consecutive Cagematch wins in a row will do that for you.

Tonight ends Christian Slater's foray into network TV, "My Own Worst Enemy". Did any of you out there watch it? To us it seemed to cement the stereotype that Slater has a one-dimensional style even though we know he can do more than that. High budget + Star Name + Low Concept = Failure. Did we need another spy/assassin/crime series? No. There's worse shows out there that could use the ax so let's see them use it. How about Holly Hunter's "Saving Grace"? It's true that she showed off her bare bottom about 1.2x per episode but that shouldn't be enough to save that series. Any suggestions of shows you'd like to see go away?

To prepare us for his upcoming takeover of NBC's "Late Night", Jimmy Fallon will be posting vlog entries at latenightwithjimmyfallon.com at 12:30am ET.

Can't say much about last night's "24" pseudo-premiere other than: Tony Almeida! Also, the "True Blood" finale was excellent, it's such a shame that we have to wait until late summer '09 to get another taste of this vampire madness.

LAist had a chance to talk to James Kyson Lee, most well known right now for his role as "Ando" in NBC's "Heroes". With a considerable resume before "Heroes" that includes "Las Vegas" and "CSI", Lee is currently in production on Volume 4 of "Heroes" and has six other projects in post-production so we were very lucky to get a few minutes with him.

In the battle of the November sweeps, CBS is ahead (will Letterman now stop saying nobody is watching his network?) but all the networks, and let's be really progressive here and call The CW a network, are down from 8 to 24% compared to a year ago (with The CW as the biggest loser).

With election night drama over, we are left only with the depression that end-of-season TV brings. Peppered left and right by "only X episodes left!" messaging, we're already amassing vast quantities of DVDs to get us through T-giving and the holidays. What can we look forward to other than next season with it's dialed in premieres of "Lost" (January 21st - back on Wednesdays) and "24" with a two-hour seventh season "prequel" on November 23rd (the new season actually begins on January 11th). Look for Kiefer to hit late night talk shows starting next week.

In a big mea culpa, Heroes creator Tim Kring admitted that the show has become a little lost -- confusing, too many characters, meandering storylines, etc. Over the weekend, changes were made and two of the show’s top writer-producers, Jesse Alexander and Jeph Loeb, were let go.

The TV Junkie Plan: "UFOs Over Earth" (dude, UFOs!!), "Raising the Bar" (need a Bochco fix), "Tonight Show" (gonna see Michelle kick it!)

In case you missed the Sarah Palin rap on "SNL", you have another chance to see it via NBC online. Gotta love Amy Poehler rocking the joint even at 14 months pregnant.

Yeah, Tim Kring we're talking to you.

The market free fall has been good for something other than "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" and that's Comedy Central who recorded excellent opening nights for "The Sarah Silverman Program" and the best viewership ever for "The Daily Show" and "The Colber(t) Repor(t)" according to B&C. I guess we'll all be laughing when the asteroid hits.

Tyler Perry, the man who Hollywood ignored for years before his sold-out plays were translated into the very successful series' "House of Payne" and "Meet the Browns", opened his own 30 acre studios in Atlanta this weekend. Just wait for Mike Birbiglia to do the same thing.

Did you survive last night's avalanche of season premieres? Any favorites from last night?

In the mind of the TV Junkie, last night's Emmy Awards were a vindication of the cutting edge programming happening on cable, both premium and basic. With the exception of reality programming and vague miniseries that nobody has heard of, the big networks came up mostly empty other than NBC's fantastic "30 Rock".

While the cast of "Heroes" films the new season, Adrian Pasdar continues shooting videos on the set.

Even though they are the two big releases today, I just couldn't bring myself to lead with the awful left off...with more girl-liking.

Definitely, I have enjoyed this journey.

After reviewing a few dozen releases this year this is my top ten of reviewed albums plus a few select tracks of items that I went out and hunted down myself. These weren't easy to select out of the great stuff I received so it was a challenge. I'd like to thank the labels and their PR agencies for hunting me down and sending CDs to me. I reviewed everything that I received this year with just a couple of exceptions of items I felt I wasn't qualified to review. [Hint to labels and their agencies: LAist likes getting stuff to review, look for our contact info on the staff page]. In my Top Ten is a band (Tall Pony) that wasn't even signed when I posted the review and I had a few others like that this year but there should haver been more. Also, please note that there are 3 LA bands/groups in my Top Ten (Bitter:Sweet, No Age, The Deadly Syndrome).
