Superchunk, The Vaselines, Telekinesis @ the Fonda 10/19/10

             + 8 more

Last week, Superchunk brought out LA’s contingent of old school indie rock fans to celebrate their new full-length, Majesty Shredding. Besides playing new songs, Mac and crew made sure the crowd were satiated with the old stuff, which sounded as fresh and new as if put out today. For those of you who maybe missed Superchunk among the Pavements and Sonic Youths of that decade, do yourself a favor and grab No Pocky for Kitty and Foolish. They're a genre defining band, and the reason why Merge Records is so successful (yeah, that Merge). One of my all time favorites, showing absolutely no sign of slowing down (or pogoing less). The Vaselines (remember "Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam"?) and Telekinesis opened. more ›

The New Pornographers, The Dodos, Imaad Wasif @ The Fonda 07/20/10

             + 8 more

If you were fortunate enough to have caught one (or both!) nights of The New Pornographers, on tour with The Dodos and Imaad Wasif, you were treated to an eclectic evening of beautiful music that had fans singing along to every song. We're hoping more headlining bands pick their accompanying acts as carefully as The New Pornographers did, allowing music-goers to arrive early and stay late. The Dodos performance alone was worth the price of admission, playing favorites off Visiter and Time to Die. more ›

Meiko & Priscilla Ahn @ Hotel Cafe, 1/23 & 1/24/08

Meiko & Priscilla Ahn @ Hotel Cafe, 1/23 & 1/24/08

Local singer/songwriters Meiko (MySpace) and Priscilla Ahn (MySpace) share similar qualities -- they are part-Asian (Meiko is quarter-Japanese and Ahn is half-Korean), and originally from back east (Meiko from Georgia and Ahn from Pennsylvania). So perhaps it was coincidental that both were booked in back-to-back shows last week at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, with Meiko onstage last Wednesday and Ahn last Thursday. more ›

Creative Commons Benefit: Spoon @ The Henry Fonda Theater, 9/10/07

Last night Spoon played alongside Kool Keith at the Henry Fonda Theatre. Need I say more? Oh and it was for a great cause! Both artists rocked out to raise money for the non-profit organization Creative Commons. This was the third time they've held a CC Benefit. Prior CC Benefits featured David Byrne, Gilberto Gil, Girl Talk, Diplo, and Peeping Tom. I had no idea who was opening this special event until I arrived... more ›

Imaginary Interview with Snoop Dogg about Real Show

LAist: Snoop we love you! Snoop Dogg: I accept your love and return it back to you snoop-fold. Bro, you're playing at the Henry Fonda Theatre next Tuesday the 26th with a live band for a BET Awards after party. And tickets haven't sold out yet. What's up with that? Oh it's chill, my cousin. People sometimes need things to percolate before it strikes them that they can see Big Snoop Dogg live and... more ›

5 Reasons to See Architecture in Helsinki Tonight

5 Reasons to See Architecture in Helsinki Tonight

5. The Melbourne, Australia-based sextet will perform a high-energy, boogie-inducing set featuring songs from their third LP, "Places Like This" (due August); so if you've seen them before, it's time to go back for more. AIH incorporates what's best described as Australian bush yelping reminiscent of early Midnight Oil while managing to sound at times like the B-52s, Gang of Four, Devo, and Talking Heads. Oh, and vocalist / multi-instrumentalist Kellie Sutherland has a most... more ›

Grand Ole Opry Revival in Hollywood

(l-r): Billy Bob Thornton, Marty Stuart, Porter Wagoner, and Dwight Yoakam perform a surprise set before Neko Case @ The Henry Fonda Theatre. Photo courtesy Ice Cream Man. Top Five New CD Releases

Top Five New CD Releases

Cam’Ron Killa Season (Diplomatic Man) – He’s straight-up gangsta. In the last two years he’s hunted internet pedophiles, gotten shot and beefed with Jay-Z. Some critics complain that the beats on this album sound too much like the last one, but most agree that his lyrics make it an enjoyable listen. He’s even got a song about his battle with irritable bowel syndrome. more ›

LAist Essential Listening

LAist Essential Listening

You asked for it, we listened. Our "essentials" list has a decidedly local flavor now. All bands are either LA-based, LA-natives or playing gigs in the Southland. Some bands are so new that they don't have an EP, MP3 or CD yet. To remedy that, we've linked to their myspace streams and included upcoming tour info so you can catch them locally.

Army Navy | Local Rock
Silvery Sleds [stream]
Although their latest EP is currently out of print, you can hear free streams of Army Navy's music on myspace and their website. Better yet, see them at the Silverlake Lounge on November 7.
Sons and Daughters | Alternative
Dance Me In [download]
Though not LA natives, the band is no stranger to the LA music scene, having just played at Spaceland and the Henry Fonda Theatre. If you missed their live gig, check out this single. It's aggro, addicting and combines rock and electronic sensibilities.
Birdmonster | Local Rock
All The Holes In The Wall [download]
Birdmonster pride themselves on pushing the envelope. This track is a perfect case in point. It's part country, part rock, but decidedly original. Catch Birdmonster for free on October 23 at Spaceland.
Timonium | Local Rock/Psychedelic
Filamented [free download | stream]
This airy track ranges from etherial to murky. The lyrics are often obscured in the musical landscape, but it's ultimately a worthwhile trip. Hear Timonium live on October 25 at Spaceland.
The New Fidelity | Local Powerpop/Alternative
Miss You Like You're Dead [free download | stream]
Catchy guitar rifts are juxtaposed with offbeat lyrics and vocals that are just edgy enough to give the song some punch. This track won't change the world, but it will make you smile and tap your foot. See the band October 25 at the echo.
