The Henry Clay People Are Alive And 'Living In Debt'

In honor of former Secretary of State Henry Clay who died on this day in 1852, we present a video lunch from local music makers The Henry Clay People who are alive, and 'Living in Debt.' Formerly heavy on the Hold Steady sound evocative of the Springsteen spirit, the Glendale-formed fellas released a newly focused 5-song EP This Is A Desert just last month. more ›

Tonight In Rock: HEALTH, The Henry Clay People, Blake Mills, Suckers

Tonight In Rock: HEALTH, The Henry Clay People, Blake Mills, Suckers

Tonight local noise-infused rock outfit HEALTH will be headlining the Echoplex with none other than Houston-based noise-infused psych rock anomaly Indian Jewelry and LA-based lo-fi pop act Best Coast in tow. Former Dawes/Simon Dawes member, local singer-songwriter Blake Mills (LAist Review) is poised to grace Bordello in the outskirts of Downtown. And, lastly, Brooklyn quartet Suckers will be celebrating the release of their debut album, 2010's Wild Smile, performing for free in-store at Amoeba Music in Hollyweird. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch local indie rock outfit the Henry Clay People, who will be ringing in their latest effort—2010's Somewhere on the Golden Coast—which is set for release today via TBD Records. LAist favorites, LA-based alt-rockers Olin & the Moon (LAist Interview) are slated to kick things off. more ›

Week In Rock: Thao & Mirah & the Most of All, Mayer Hawthorne, Delorean, The Henry Clay People

This week two of the most prominent women in indie folk rock, Mirah and Thao Nguyen, will be combining forces, backing one another at the Bootleg Theater in what will invariably be deemed a once-in-a-lifetime experience. LA-by-way-of-Michigan retro soul singer-songwriter Mayer Hawthorne is poised to perform at the Getty Center for this month's edition of 'Saturdays off the 405.' Spanish electro pop outfit Delorean will be ringing in their third studio album, 2010's Subiza, at the Echo with Echo Park-bred bilingual, genre-bending quartet Wait.Think.Fast.. And, lastly, local indie rock outfit the Henry Clay People will be headlining Spaceland in celebration of their latest effort, 2010's Somewhere on the Golden Coast, which is set for release June 8th on TBD Records. more ›

Meet Ashley Jex: Founder of JAXART Records

Meet Ashley Jex: Founder of JAXART Records

If Wonder Woman had hung up her cape and chosen to give up her life of fighting crime and instead wanted to get into the local music scene, she may have asked some pointers from Ashley Jex. At the tender age of twenty five, Jex has created a local music empire. Not only has she launched a very influential record label, JAXART out of her living room, she still makes time for her music blog,Rock Insider, and her band The Monolators, and somehow her day job. She can do it all. LAist caught up with Jex in her industrial epicenter (aka living room) to ask her how the heck she manages to stay awake. Here is some of what was said. more ›

Earlimart's Top Ten of 2008

Earlimart's Top Ten of 2008

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008. more ›

Tonight in Rock: Mika, Bangkok Five, Mon. Night Residencies

Sometimes Monday nights lead to tough choices. For Jax at Rock Insider, it's between The Pity Party (who we interviewed this morning) and The Henry Clay People. Luckily, both bands are playing all month. Still, there are many choices. If you like your music Folk, your drinks cheap and have never been to Joe's Great American Bar & Grill in Burbank, it's a pretty sweet place to catch music seven days a week -- tonight is Dafni. more ›

Guide to February Rock Music Residencies

Guide to February Rock Music Residencies

Month-long residencies are one of the best ways to catch up-and-coming bands in Los Angeles. You have at least four times to catch a band, and each time, if they are gaining popularity over each show, it will be harder to see them. Last Thursday at their final residency concert, The Airborne Toxic Event played a sold out show with another 300 fans not getting in at the door. That's how crazy residencies can be. Catch 'em while you can. Here's your February line-up: more ›

Tonight is the first night of February residencies at Spaceland, Silverlake Lounge, Crash Mansion and The Echo/Echoplex. By last Thursday, The Airborne Toxic Event had gained so much popularity from their January residency, they had to reject 300 people from the door.
