May is National Burger Month, but you've found us happily asking "Where's the Beef?" as we go in pursuit of the American classic, done in unconventional ways. From vegan and veggie versions to creative meats and seafood tucked between two buns, a few LAisters are sharing their picks for the best beef-less burger in town.
Where's the Beef? L.A.'s BEST "Alternative" Burgers
In-N-Out Demands Manhattan Beach Eatery Rename Their Burger Called the Double Double
In-N-Out makes burgers beloved by many, but they also have a rep for making sure no one else makes a burger like them--or at least calls it by the same name. Famously protective of their menu and aesthetics, the SoCal chain has asked a nearly 40-year-old Manhattan Beach eatery to take the burger they're calling a Double Double off their menu.
Are These the 10 Best Burgers in the OC?
Burger lovers from behind the Orange Curtain, it's your time to shine! A Banh mi burger, fare from a favorite SoCal chain, the concoction of a gastropub... All's fair in love and the all mighty hamburger wars, including in the OC.
Map: Welcome to the Burgerhood
Are burgers the new cupcake? Los Angeles, I'm Yours posits that burgers are are burgeoning trend, and new burger-centric eateries keep popping up predominantly in one overall geographic area. "The area is totally accessible by Metro and what we are calling the Burger District, a little burgerhood in Hollywood," they explain.
Burger Lovers: Make Your Hamburger Bed Dreams A Reality
Do you love burgers? I mean, do you really love burgers? Because there is a posting on Craigslist that you will not want to sleep on. Someone is forced to part with their Hamburger Bed, and that means this "Wendy's style" square-pattied, sesame seed-studded bun topped wonder can be yours.
Burger Lovers, Rejoice: Silverton & Pressman's Short Order Breaks Ground at Farmers' Market
Los Angeles suffers from a pretty chronic case of Burgermania, and the hype gets fueled by news of an impending new contender for the city's favorite beefy bite between two buns. One of the most highly-anticipated burgerventures is the dream team of Nancy Silverton and Amy Pressman, and their Short Order burger restaurant, which is getting closer to reality in its spot in the historic Original Farmers' Market.
Oinskter Takes On Beloved Burgers, Begins With the Big Mac
It's Burger Week at the Oinkster, and enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting each night's new tribute offering. "Eagle Rock's heroes at Oinkster have scored my love (again) with 'Burger Week,'" says burger lover Carlos Rossi. Rossi, a frequent LAist Featured Photos pool contributor, also shared with us his shots of Monday night's special, the Oinkster's version of the classic McDonald's Big Mac.
Pig Out Next Week on Special Burgers at Oinkster
Squid Ink got our attention this morning with news of a week-long burger celebration at The Oinkster, one of our favorite Eagle Rock eating spots.
Why Today is a Good Day to Eat a Burger
Whether you like yours all-beef, stuffed or smothered with cheese, plain and chaste, turkey, veggie, or piled high with toppings, in case you were looking for an excuse to eat a hamburger today, we offer you incentive in the form of easy justification. May happens to be National Hamburger Month, and, if you go by some "food holiday" calendars, May 28th specifically is National Hamburger Day.
Five Guys Taking Over for Fatburger, Too?
The stage has already been set for an East Coast/West Coast battle of the burgers between upstart Five Guys and SoCal classic In-n-Out. But when we brought up the brewing rivalry, a third player, and the second to rep the local scene, was thrown in the mix: Fatburger. Well, score one more for Five Guys in that throwdown, as the OC Register's Fast Food Maven confirms that the Virigina-based franchise will be taking over the Fatburger spot at Newport's Fashion Island.
Spiked Milkshakes & Tasty Burgers Await You at Go Burger
In the mood for a burger and a spiked milkshake in the heart of Hollywood? Go to Go Burger. The folks at New York-based BLT have had such success with their food truck (called Go Burger) that they’ve opened brick-and-mortar restaurants. It’s happening more and more; the food truck craze is resulting in restaurants (like The Alibi which was born from the Kogi truck) being built due to the popularity of the trucks. By the way, if you ever find yourself at BLT you have to order the Braised Short Ribs. You’ll cry tears of joy. You’re welcome.
Food Fight: Woman Sues Over Cupcake Sleeves
You know what your cupcake is missing? A sleeve. No, not the paper wrapping with which it's already adorned -- something else, that might make it look like an ice cream cone, a hamburger, or a tub of popcorn. (Because cupcakes are otherwise such unappealing foods.) Fortunately, such an item exists
Juicy Burger: Formidable! But is it LA's Best Between Buns?
Just a block from the intersection of Hollywood and Vine, Juicy Burger doesn’t particularly stand out save for the banner touting that it was voted “Best Burger in L.A. - 2010 by Citysearch.” This is no small feat in the city that is arguably the world’s burger mecca. So the bar is set high. Can a burger live up to claims of “Best Burger”? Yes
and no
and yes.
Meet the Grill 'Em All Truck: Burgers That Rock on the Road
Is there anything more rock and roll than hitting the road with a bunch of people and facing new crowds of fans every day with the goal of giving them their fill of the great stuff you've got to offer?
Pssst: How to Make In-n-Out's Double Double Animal Style
The industrious food-lovers of Serious Eats are at it again, and this time they've broken down and reconstructed a SoCal classic: The In-n-Out Double Double Animal Style burger.
Map: The Best Burgers in L.A.
How has your National Hamburger Month celebration been going? You could check out some bunned offerings from newer kids on the burger block like The Slaw Dogs or the Patty Wagon. Or maybe just stick to the old reliable, like In-N-Out, or one of our favorites (25 Degrees, Golden State, or one of the 10 spots we declared the Best in L.A.).
Map: Conquering the Fast Food McForce
Just how saturated is America by the top 8 fast food burger chains? This map, created by Weather Sealed, illustrates the density of each chain across the nation. McDonald's--in the black--obviously dominates, but it looks like here in Southern California the market leader is Jack in the Box. Oddly enough, none of their burger offerings made our list of the top burgers in Los Angeles.
Eye Nosh: Cube's Burger...One of the Best in Town?
We are still doggedly in pursuit of finding the best burger in town (although sometimes it helps if we break it down by region) and recently we tucked into this tempting meat, cheese, toppings, and bun combo from Cube and found it's definitely in contention for a top spot on the list.
Who's Got the Best Burger in the Valley?
A few days ago we asked for some input on a very serious issue: Who's got the best burger in the Valley? The results were pretty diverse, including the non-carnivore options, and the occasional lapse of awareness of local geography (err, sorry, Stout and 8oz aren't in the Valley), and a range of answers pointing to mostly burger stands and more casual neighborhood joints. While we suggested The Counter in Studio City, commenter AJ remarked that the build-your-own high-end burger spot "is too hit-or-miss for me but when it's good, it's GREAT," adding a pick for a fave: "But all in all, I really think my favorite burger in the valley is at Stanley's on Ventura Blvd."
Eye Nosh: That's What a Hamburger's All About
LAist Featured Photos pool contributer 护士黑鹰 calls this shot "The Drill." As in, you know it.

On This Day...
I am thankful for… Thanksgiving - even though I think it’s a stupid holiday, and I pretty much hate all the food associated with it - for giving me the opportunity to spend the day with family that I love and actually enjoy being around. I am thankful every day that I am able to make a living being creative and doing something I love. (Except for when I’m on strike) I am thankful...
Late Night Eats: Bob's Big Boy
We couldn't do a proper tribute to Late Night Eats in Los Angeles without a visit to the original Late Night Eats establishment, the one that started it all, the restaurant that embodies the very essence of car-hopping, car-worshiping SoCal burger culture: Bob's Big Boy. The Big Boy Burger was born in Glendale in 1936, the brainchild of Bob Wian (I know, the alliteration is getting a bit much for me too); the Burbank branch...
Extra, Extra: Corn Surplus, Bacteria Rampage, Hey! At Least It's Nice Outside
Anti-war protesters have been gathering in Downtown Los Angeles this afternoon; the CHP has blocked off two ramps on the 101 because of the protest. Huge meat recall: Topps Meat Company is recalling over 20 million pounds of hamburger patties that may be infected with e.coli: more than a dozen people have gotten sick. The man who threatened Tom Cruise with extortion for stolen wedding pictures was found dead in his home, an apparent...
Health Department Closes Major LA Eateries this Summer! Pinkberry, Doughboys, Cold Stone Creamery, and More!
No! This just can't be happening! I scrupulously avoid reading anything published by the LA County Department of Health, because otherwise I would never be able to eat anywhere ever again. Unfortunately, my friend Donna just alerted me to the fact that Doughboy's, provider of our red velvet cake fix, made the Health Department's Food Facility Closure List for the period 05/31/2007 through 08/31/2007. Due to vermin infestation. Quelle horreur ! In reality, I...
Foodie Round-up: New Pollan, Roasted Figs, and Hamburger Helpless
Could you do the 100 Yard Diet? Oakland blogger YourCityFarmer spent the entire month of July eating only things she grew, raised, and made herself: and that includes meat. New Michael Pollan, In Defense of Food, coming in November! Also, he shares some of his favorite reads with Newsweek. EaterLA is reporting that the kitschy German restaurant Lowenbrou Keller will be closing "when the food runs out" - but the owners plan to reopen...
Burger Wars: Is Fatburger Better than In N' Out?
While most Angelenos will urge their visitors to try a meal at In N' Out (the best to capture that classic sunshiney L.A. drive-through burger experience), they often forget about the other local fast-food burger phenomenon: Fatburger. Both establishments boast excellent burgers and a fool-proof menu, but there are some major (and delicious) differences that make it almost impossible to decide which is better (kind of like the Pink's versus Skooby's debate -- but...
