On Friday, the world lost one of its culinary giants: Esther Snyder, 86, matriarch of In-N-Out. Halloween always means three things. Costumes, candy, and pumpkins. And what better way to enjoy a pumpkin than baked up in a delicious pie? Once you carve the guts out of those suckers, you gotta do something with 'em. And we advocate eating those guts, preferably with a big scoop of whipped cream and/or vanilla ice cream.

In-n-Out is the obvious choice for number one. It's a tradition, it's a legend, it's a SoCal staple. We like that they have a secret menu, that they were the first to offer a burger "protein style" and that from what we hear, they treat their employees well. We like what comes with the burger, too--creamy milkshakes and tasty french fries. The Double Double is one of our favorite burgers, hands down.

What a sad legacy for a hospital named after Martin Luther King, Jr. and Charles R. Drew. The Los Angeles Times reports that King/Drew Medical Center is losing accreditation from a National Health Agency. While it won't force the hospital to close, it will prevent several insurance companies from paying for services there and will likely end several of the doctor training programs the beleaguered facility is famous for. This is as good as time as any to take a look at The Times special report on the trouble at King/Drew and to remind our readers not to get sick in Watts. Seriously.

Customers of Irv's Burgers shoved aside their cheeseburger combos, signed petitions and wrote protest letters when they learned a month ago that their West Hollywood burger joint was about to be torn down to make way for a chain coffee outlet.

Until becomes a reality, may LAist suggest another local bingo event that is just as dramatic and showy as your imagination?
