Local Blogger Running Bid and Eat Fundraiser for Haiti

LA food blogger Gourmet Pigs is running a second installation of an online bidding-style fundraiser to bring in donations to support two groups helping with relief in Haiti. Bid and Eat is pretty straightforward concept: Several local eateries have donated offers and certificates for folks to bid on, and the proceeds will go to CHF International and Operation USA. The first Bid and Eat raised $765, so the goal for number two is $1000. Participating restaurants include Pasadena's historic The Raymond, as well as Pal Cabron, Elements Kitchen, Jian BBQ and more. Bidding ends tomorrow, March 2nd, at midnight, so head over now so you can bid, eat, and help the relief efforts in Haiti. more ›

Howard Zinn was going to speak at SMMoA about his new documentary, The People Speak, which uses dramatic and musical performances of diaries, letters and speeches by everyday Americans to give voice to those who fought for social change. But since his death last week, the event has become a tribute to Zinn instead. The 8 pm event is now full, but a stand-by line opens at 7 pm (seating is not guaranteed). The sun came out this weekend, and shone down upon the streets of West Los Angeles, where 25 of LA's trendy mobile eateries had gathered at the TLofts to give hungry Angelenos a chance to eat for a cause. Organized by the Southern California Mobile Food Vendors Association (the folks working hard to get the Santa Monica Food Truck Lot in the clear again, too), the trucks and patrons lined the streets from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. to raise money for the American Red Cross' Haiti Relief operations. more ›

Radiohead Raises $572,000 for Haiti with Oxfam America at the Henry Fonda Music Box

Late Thursday Radiohead announced that it would perform a charity show benefiting the survivors of the devastating January 12th earthquake in Haiti. The tickets were made available via a Ticketmaster auction which ended with a final minimum bid of $475 (meaning many secured their tickets for $450). Some went above and beyond as the proceeds were going to Oxfam America's Haiti Relief Fund and the high bid was $2,000 per ticket (for either 2 or 4 tickets), according to the band. more ›

Last night, California for Haiti raised $14,000 at TiGeorges' Chicken restaurant for the relief efforts in Haiti. About 300, including plenty of local news, came out to the Echo Park eatery to raise money, donate goods, sort fact from rumor, eat chicken, watch the news, and collect contact information for those wanting to help. Haitian native George Laguerre, owner of TiGeorges' Chicken in Echo Park, is hosting a dinner tonight on behalf of victims of the earthquake that devastated Haiti this week.
