Cyber "Sextortionist" Gets Stiff 6-Year Sentence
A man who hacked into the computer of more than 100 women, read their emails, spied on them through webcams, obtained nude pictures and in some cases threatened to release them publicly was sentenced to six years in prison yesterday.
Federal Judge George King handed down the stiff penalty to Luis Mijangos, 32, of Santa Ana that he said was a warning to other hackers, The Associated Press reports.
Anonymous Member Pleads Guilty in Scientology Cyber Attack
Remember back in 2008 when that well-produced creepy video came out, prompting numerous worldwide protests of the Church of Scientology? Since then, that energy and zeal to oppose the church has died down and yesterday the Church scored a point when a Nebraska man agreed to plead guilty in a Los Angeles federal court, according to the LA Times. Brian Thomas Mettenbrink, 20, admitted to engaging in a cyber attack that took down the Church's websites. He will enter into a plea next week.
Clippers Player Mark Madsen Buys Stolen Web Address on eBay
Not only was Mark Madsen recently traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, he also bought a pretty nice sounding web domain on eBay--www.P2P.com. Too bad, it was stolen, reports the Associated Press. A 25-year-old New Jersey man apparently hacked the website, took ownership and then sold it to Madsen for $100,000 over the auction based site. No word from Madsen yet--he's a big Twitterer--but alleged hacker Daniel Goncalves faces "felony charges of theft by unlawful taking or deception, identity theft, and computer theft," which could carry 10 years for each count. The case is reportedly the first ever criminal prosecution of domain theft.

Overnight, the official No on Prop 8 website was hit by a massive distributed denial of service attack (DDoS) essentially shutting down the site. According to the campaign, the attack originated from within California in addition to Texas, New Jersey and Georgia.

A late-night denial-of-service attack shut down the official website of opponents of Prop 8, the ballot initiative that seeks to ban gay marriage in California. "We're getting on the order of 1000 connections from the same IP addresses, so yeah--it looks like an attack," a No on 8 campaign staffer wrote in an e-mail during the attack.
