Ice Rink in Santa Monica to Open Tonight

It's time to get into the winter spirit. Beginning this afternoon, an 8,000 square foot outdoor ice rink will open to the public in Santa Monica with the unveiling of a 45-foot ice sculpture in promotion of the Blu-ray disc and DVD release of Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Supposedly, the 133,000-pound sculpture of the character Scrat will break the Guinness World Record for Tallest Ice Sculpture.

As dusk was falling over Santa Monica Pier on Friday night, Ronnie Renner was rising. The motorcycle daredevil broke the Guinness World Record for highest air ever attained on a quarterpipe, which had been constructed near the pier's ferris wheel and roller coaster. A pair of towers, each 55 feet tall, were used by the crowd to estimate the height of each attempt. A team of surveyors used reflectors and lasers to confirm the official measurements.

Jim Purol put his weary butt down in the seat at the Rose Bowl today that took him over the line and earned him the record for sitting in the most seats in 48 hours. The Pasadena Star-News reports that Purol took a load off in over 39,000 seats, which is only scratching the surface of the legendary stadium's 90,000+ capacity (as mentioned on the official site's facts list). What's crazier, is that Purol is going to keep going--he's going to sit in every seat of the house over the next 5 days...and he's hoping to figure out which one is the best. Our guess? Maybe the last one...

LA Ink star and tattoo artist Kat Von D is out to set a Guinness World Record today for doing the most tattoos in a 24-hour period. She's kicking things off at noon today at her LA shop High Voltage, and word on the street is that a large crowd has already gathered.

Because he's too shy (and way too busy) to announce it here himself, I am proud to do the honors: Zach Behrens has officially accepted the Editor position here at LAist and he'll be starting on December 17th. BloggingLA has the announcement, as well as a nice picture of the new editor's "Sexy Face." That's how you get your Canadian fanbase, Behrens!!! Rain. Please. Rain. Effects of the strike are starting to ripple out...
