The LAPD this morning was looking for a teenaged girl who allegedly stole a car this morning with an infant inside. The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. when two-month-old child's grandfather stopped to pick up a newspaper at a newsstand, leaving the red 2000 Ford Expedition running and the child inside. As the economy tanked in 2009, so did car thefts, which saw a 15.4% decline in areas patrolled by the California Highway Patrol, the agency announced today. Police credit the drop from nearly 200,000 cars in 2008 to 169,000 in 2009 to enforcement, education and technology. more ›

A family of four were irate and shaken last night after one of them had his car stolen after being shot at a Washington Mutual bank branch, on the corner of Sherman Way and Vassar Avenue in Canoga Park. Kami, a resident of the area, said he was approached at the bank's street-front ATM by a man holding a gun demanding money. When Kami explained that he was only checking his account to confirm that he was out of money, the man shot twice, and ran to Kami's car. The thief then broke the window and drove off.
