It's no surprise that the Grilled Cheese Truck's debut last night drew hundreds of people who braved the windy weather and long wait. After all, it's grilled cheese, America's ooey gooey classic comfort food. Add to that Los Angeles' recent and growing obsession with gourmet food trucks hitting the streets and you've got the perfect recipe.

After weeks of drool-worthy anticipation, it's official: The Grilled Cheese Truck gets rolling tomorrow night at The Brig in Venice. The announcement came down overnight via Twitter: "Well, THE WAIT IS OVER AND IT'S TIME TO MELT! Who's busy Tuesday evening? Meet us on the westside....? CheesyMac&Rib w/ some tots anyone?" Of course, in typical 140-character's worth fashion, the details have been rolling out bit(e) by bit(e): "Here's the deal.World famous Brig to host our unveiling Tuesday night @830 til 1015 so we leave and make room for Kogi @1030. Short & sweet."

What Has 4 Wheels, 2 Pieces of Bread, and Lots of Melted Cheese?

If you answered: A Grilled Cheese Sandwich on Wheels, you'd be correct! Yes, Los Angeles, it's coming. Another food truck is gearing up to hit the streets to peddle a familiar food for the socially networked masses. Already reaching out to local foodies via Twitter, the Grilled Cheese Truck says they'll be "oozing through the streets of LA soon," somewhere around four weeks from now.

It's been hot lately. Okay, really hot (at least in inland and in the Valley). But the weather should not stop us from enjoying the guilty pleasures of a simple grilled cheese and the usually-paired tomato soup. Problem is, 90-degree temperatures and soups are just not that fun. Thankfully local YouTube chef Aarti Paarti has a solution.

Vegan Cheese Mania: Grilled Cheese at Echo Park's Chango

"Just look at that picture. Look at how that cheese is melting, you know it belongs in your fucking face." That's vegan blogger Quarrygirl for you on her above photo from Chango in Echo Park. The coffeeshop is now offering grilled cheeses with that new vegan cheese that some pizzerias have started to use. Is this a trend that we'll see continue across the city? Is this Daiya vegan cheese so good that chefs are actually willing to put it on their menus? We'll see...

Bread, Butter, Cheese, Victory!

Saturday was a spectacular day, full of sun and wind, and for the lucky among us, it was also full of grilled cheese sandwiches. Los Angeles State National Park is practically in the shadow of downtown. Parts of it was still green, though few people in the ever growing line to get in probably didn’t much notice. This was the First Seventh Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational (yes, you read that right.)

The Grilled Cheese Invitational is the crowing jewel event in Los Angeles during National Grilled Cheese Month. A massive crowd of hot-cheese between grilled bread enthusiasts descended upon Los Angeles State Historic Park Saturday to see the top grillers in action and to sample their offerings as part of the 1st ever 7th annual gathering. Although the line was long the enthusiasm was high, as was the innovation of ingredients--sammies packed with Peeps, gourmet flavor combos, a giant deer made of sandwiches. Those who bucked the odds and arrived later in the day found themselves out of luck when it came to getting a hold of sandwich and beer tickets (although the Kraft samples were plentiful).

How Many Grilled Cheeses Will You Eat This Weekend?

Cool weather, beer, wine, public transportation and best of all tons of grilled cheeses! That's what's going down tomorrow afternoon at the Cornfields, better known these days as Los Angeles State Historic Park just off the Gold Line Chinatown stop.

We're Not Fooling: April Is National Grilled Cheese Month

Trust us on this one: April is National Grilled Cheese Month. Just like last year, and the year before that, LAist thinks this is just about the ooey-gooeyest most delicious thing since--or involving--sliced bread.

Last fall, Will Shamlian of 4100 Bar/The Chalet/Library Bar fame, opened the Laurel Tavern--a contemporary American pub as he calls it--in place of his previous popular bar, The Sapphire. As much as it was sad to see the popular (and extremely dark) Valley bar go, the new space is much more cozy and useful than ever before.

The folks over at Clementine take their grilled cheese sandwiches very seriously -- so seriously, in fact, that they are celebrating National Grilled Cheese Month (yes, it's a real holiday, not an April Fool's joke) by allowing their customers to vote in a month-long electoral process for the cheese sandwich they most want to eat. Sign me up for the Parmesan party!

It was bound to happen, I'm just sorry I didn't think of this idea first: a "taco truck" that sells healthy, organic food. "Sacrilege!" you're probably saying but then when you think about it some more you have to admit it is a pretty good idea, especially in health-conscious L.A.

Nothing causes more craziness in Culver City these days than a new place to have lunch. You’d think the Beatles had come to town. Those guys at Sony make lines that wrap around the block. In a few months, the lines calm down and then the rest of us can come in. I’ve been to Melt Down a couple of times now. It’s a small place with an open kitchen and mostly outdoor seating,...

At 9 o’clock on a summer Saturday night, Bottle Rock is hopping. People are throwing parties there, grouping the tall tables together and sharing from the small plates menu that features seasonal fruit and vegetables and artisan cheeses and charcuterie. In fact, the whole place is lit with the comfortable scent of grilled cheese. The music is full of feel good guitars, that seem vaguely recognizable, even when you don’t really know the song....

Audrey Kitching is a model, Internet personality, and phenomenon. Next month you will see her in issues of Alternative Press, Vice magazine and Misbehave. Currently she's on tour with the Warped Tour driving in an Audrey Kitching/Buzznet.com car that’s pink and green leopard print and writing about it on her Buzznet journal.

Here are a few spots for eats and drinks that we are looking forward to seeing open: 1. We were very excited to pass on to you that last month was National Grilled Cheese Month, and now we're gearing up for the impending opening of Culver City's Meltdown, which is a (mostly) grilled cheese eatery that's slated to open as early as this week. Their menu, which is available online, looks like an ooey-gooey...

Spring is when we get busy here in the Ist-A-Verse. Very busy. But, after staying bundled-up indoors all winter, it's nice for us to be out, about, and collecting things to write about for you. Here's a glimpse at what's been keeping your favorite citybloggers busily away from home and out of bed.

There has been a gross oversight, a lapse in judgment, a glitch in the matrix, a ghost in the machine, and so on and so forth… It's National Grilled Cheese Month and somehow it slipped by me like an invisible man on a banana peel. Luckily, we're not even halfway through the month, so there is still time to recover. And even more luckily, Clementine, the cutest, coziest, tastiest, freshest, raddest, lil restaurant on...

We could not be more impressed with all the restaurants going out of their way to create a veggie burger from scratch or at least deck the hell out of store-bought ones. From Stanley's in Sherman Oaks to Tiny's K.O. bar in Hollywood, LA is embracing the veggie burger. But who does it best? On that list is Lucky Devils at 6613 Hollywood Blvd., near Whitley: A delicious blend of 26 ingredients, sautéed portobello...

In Pasadena, one block north of Orange Grove Blvd on Lake St., is fast-food heaven. Among the four corners sit five fast food joints: KFC, Carl's Jr., McDonald's, Roscoe's Chicken 'n Waffles, and Orean. What the hell is Orean?!!? Oh, it's a fast food vegetarian joint. From breakfast burritos to hot dogs and hamburgers, it's an all-American vegetarian fare. However, the food doesn't come too fast -- the service is at pace with a...

One of our favorite local food blogs is Eating LA, which is helmed by Pat Saperstein, a senior editor at Variety. LAist asked her to put together her own Best of 2006, which she has so kindly shared with us; we can't help but notice that she likes pork and--if we may interpret--dislikes the deluge of Pinkberry frozen yogurt shops. Is it coincidence, we wonder, that she, too links the year to the pig, like...

DCist is screwed in the event of an oil crisis. Not that we're not all screwed in the event of an oil crisis, just D.C. is more screwed. Don't sell your car yet, District resident, a cabbie can kick you to the curb if he doesn't like your address. Not even Metro can save you now.

There was a day where it was open 24 hours. These days, a nightly close at 2 a.m. is their style (or on Tuesdays at a mysterious 1:30 a.m.) A shift manager proudly told us they are the only late night store of their brand in L.A. County.

Our foodbloogers were called away this week so we're late to the table of the ruckus that's been caused by an article in the March issue of Food & Wine. Columnist Pete Wells looks into food blogs and finds, more often than not, "tiny empires of boredom." And what happens? The emperors get pissed!

LAist recently got an e-mail from an organizer of 15 visitors en route from France, age 35-55. It reads, in part:

LAist has noticed a startling development in the current food trends of the greater Los Angeles area. That trend -- that the once unique and sparsely-distributed "chicken wrap" has now infested every nook and cranny of LA's food service world.
