Regina Spektor @ The Greek Theatre 10/28/09

Regina Spektor emerged onto the stage of the Greek Theatre Wednesday night like a child at her first "grown up" party. Her flame-red hair hung in loose ringlets about her face, she wore a poofy white dress adorned with a cartoonish black bow, and her bright red lips suggested a slightly off-kilter leaning towards the naughty. When she spoke she seemed baffled and awed that so many people would don scarves and hats and sweaters to sit out under the stars on such a chilly October night just to see her. "Thank you," she repeated, when shouts of "I love you Regina!" or "Marry me!" or "Play 'Samson'!" gave her room to get a word in edgewise. But when she sang...

Classical Pick of the Week: From Virtual Reality to Reality

Video Games Live is a popular concert that features music from some of the greatest video games of all time. It's perfect for the whole family, you can bring out the inner nerd in you (or your child) at a concert featuring live music, videos, synchronized lighting, and some live action. With tunes from Mario, Zelda, Halo, Final Fantasy, Warcraft, Tron, Donkey Kong, Tetris, and Space Invaders, feel free to reminisce about the old days of playing video games at the laundromat or on your spoiled friend's new NES. Bond with your children with tales of games that used to be in 2-D or amaze them with stories of when games were all about substance rather than style. You can also impress your friends (real or imaginary) with anecdotes about some of these great composers (Tallarico, Wall, Uematsu, Kondo) that you'll get to hear.

A few weeks ago, the Bird Sanctuary Trail finally opened back up after the 2007 Griffith Park fire left it unusable to the public. It's a relatively short hike, but one that offers great views and connects to a wider system of trails.

Two great music venues, The Greek Theatre and Gibson Ampitheatre, are paired up to offer concert-goers options to make seeing live shows an even greater experience. It's called Premiere Marquee Club, and they offer premiums to members who purchase tickets to multiple events from a selection of shows* between the two venues.

What a great line-up: music greats Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox and Buddy Guy will headline this Sunday at the Greek Theatre with Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robby Krieger, Eric Johnson, David Hidalgo & Ceacar Rosas of Los Lobos, Hubert Sumlin, Chris Layton, Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Gales, Mato Nanji.

Although it sometimes takes two or three listens to truly appreciate and feel familiarity with an album, Lisa Hannigan’s debut, Sea Sew, is a different story. Hers is a rare record that feels comfortable on the first listen—sort of like slipping on a pair of warm, fuzzy slippers and curling up next to the fire on a blustery day. LAist caught up with Hannigan last week to chat about sewing, venn diagrams and what it feels like to be drenched in chocolate.

Summer may be officially over, but the shows at The Greek Theatre will still go on. Next week on Friday, October 3rd, David Byrne will hit the Greek to play a show with the music from the latest album by him and Brian Eno, which is their first in 30 years. Tickets run $40-75 but we're giving a few pairs away.

Some bands are simply meant to be seen live.

In addition to our My Morning Jacket contest (which ends Friday), we are giving away a pair of tickets to The Raconteurs' concert on Tuesday, September 23 at The Greek Theatre (tickets). The band also plays on Monday, September 22 (tickets). This concert tour is in support of their "Consolers Of The Lonely" album.

The contest for tomorrow's Black Crowes/G.Love & Special Sauce concert at The Greek Theatre is over, but we still have more for you. This Sunday, September 21, My Morning Jacket plays at The Greek's amphitheater space for their 5th studio album, The Evil Urges, which was released in June (tickets can be bought here)

This Wednesday, September 17, The Black Crowes will grace Los Angeles' Greek Theatre along with G. Love & Special Sauce and Howlin' Rain (you can buy tickets here). The “Euphoria or Bust Tour” feature songs from the Crowes' first all new studio material in seven years, Warpaint.

As summer goes along, the Greek Theatre is still happening with many outdoor shows. The upcoming schedule includes the Gipsy Kings, Jethro Tull, The Raconteurs, Sigur Rós, The Swell Season, Jason Mraz and more. But today we're featuring and giving two pairs of tickets away to the Friday, August 22 Café Tacvba show, with special guests, Ima Robot (you can get tickets here)

Ringo Starr and his 10th All-Starr Band wrapped up a 31 date tour with a nostalgia-drenched set Saturday night at the Greek. The concept for the evening is simple: In between Beatles and Ringo solo tracks, most of the All-Starr band members - Billy Squier, Edgar Winter, Colin Hay, Stuart Hamish, and Gary Wright - get to take turns performing their own solo material. Gregg Bissonette, thankfully, seems content to just play drums.

Tickets for 89.9 KCRW's presentation of Sigur Rós on October 2nd at The Greek go on sale Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Lucky for you, LAist running a contest giving you a chance to win a pair of tickets to the show before tickets go on sale.

The people behind SaveGriffithPark.org write in and ask the hard questions:

Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) and Alison Krauss (Union Station), whose critically-lauded, Gold album 'Raising Sand' continues to be a top-seller worldwide, play two shows at The Greek Theatre on Monday, June 23 and Tuesday, June 24 (you can buy tickets here: 6/23 | 6/24).

Spring and Summer nights in Los Angeles are some of the most beautiful around. And there's no better way to spend them by sitting under the stars in the presence of your favorite music act.

Still on tour in support of Wincing the Night Away, their third and most recent release from January of this year, The Shins hit up the Greek Theatre on Sunday to a packed house. Up until a few days prior I really only knew the Portland, OR based band from their two songs on the Garden State soundtrack, Caring is Creepy and New Slang. But I packed in some pre-show listens to the newest...

One of the last songs WIlco played in its just over two hour, two encore long set, was the lovely "California Stars" and it was a fitting song for the mood and atmosphere of the evening. The moon was full, those "California Stars" were out, albeit hidden behind the light pollution of LA and the crowd was into it, it was an overall great night for music, especially the brand that Wilco delivers....

Really, who doesn't love robot sounds and music about outer space? The 900 Number sample at 2:49 ain't bad either. This is clearly the Beastie Boys' world and we're just livin' in it. Ps: Adam Yauch is a dreamboat....

When Licensed to Ill came out in 1986 I was selling car stereos at the Federated Group in West LA. I sold so many good speakers and subwoofers thanks to "Brass Monkey" and "Slow & Low" that oftentimes my favorite demo tape would go "missing". I bought at least six of those tapes within a year. Only a few had been stolen, the rest had gotten worn out. So when the Beasties played the...

British pop new-wavers, Squeeze, have (mostly) reunited and they feel so good. Did you know that Molly Ringwald had a Squeeze poster in her Sixteen Candles room? Did you know that the dreamy blonde lifeguard who worked with me at summer camp had a copy of 45’s and Under in his car. Did you know I can play Yankee Doodle on a ukulele? Slightly subversive post-punk with an energetic and upbeat sound, Squeeze makes...

Whether you are partial to the Annette Bening days, or a fan of the emo-beatle hair phase, everyone's favorite Presidential advisor and American Idol runner up is playing a show at the Greek this Saturday. LAist has one pair of tickets for one lucky person (or their lucky mom). Sincerely though, people are nuts about this Aiken fellow and far be it from me to begrudge them their fetishes. In fact, I encourage them....

The Fresh - "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley

If you have watched any primetime television or new release movies you have most likely heard the bombastic sounds of Snow Patrol. In the past year alone the Scottish group has been featured in more than ten films and television shows; their single "Chasing Cars" was featured on the ABC show Grey's Anatomy not once, not twice, but three times. They are also Zach Braff-approved, with songs on both Garden State and The Last Kiss.

The double-header of Redd Kross and Sonic Youth completely blew my mind Friday night at the Greek. I had fantastic tickets (because my husband's online kung fu is the best), a photo pass (Thanks to the kind people at Nederlander Productions) and I was even on the list for the after-party (Thanks to Saccharine Trust and Dave Markey).

Don't call it a comeback, but Hollywood Blvd. will soon look very different. Today the Los Angeles City Council approved a $400 million, 7-building, mix-use complex that will feature 1,000 apartments as well as several shops and restaurants. Built on the parking lots around the Pantages theater in the once-glorious center of Hollywood (Hollywood & Vine), the council voted unanimously to change zoning laws to allow for construction to begin at the end of...
