Monsters of Folk is one of the most honest super groups I've ever seen. What I mean is this: most super groups are so in love with their new project that they pretend that it is their only musical work to date and that the audience is solely there to hear that album. They get so wrapped up in this feeling that they refuse to play the hits that everyone came there to see. I'm pleased to report that Monsters of Folk, a group made up of Conor Oberst, Jim James, M. Ward, and Mike Mogis, did no such thing. They were fully aware that most of the people who packed the sold out Greek Theater were mildly curious about Monsters of Folk's debut but were mostly there to see Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket, and M. Ward.

There is no denying that Karen O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is a rock god. If it hasn't been written in stone, let's do that right now. Ask anyone who was in the sold-out crowd on Thursday night, and they will tell you that she was mesmerizing. Granted she comes with a lot of props and costumes, but even if Ms. O had come out wearing a burlap sack and stood there doing nothing, every eye in the place would be on her. Sure there are singers with better voices. Sure there are lead singers who can dance better than her. Sure there are people who wear more outrageous clothes. But Karen O. has got "it" whatever that intangible thing may be. That certain something that makes a giant zebra striped headdress/hoodie adorned with a circle of green tape in the middle and blue striped tights, look badass rather than utterly ridiculous.
“Please don’t get the band stoned!”, begged Wayne Coyne about three songs into the Flaming Lips’ set at the Greek last Monday. “I don’t even like to smoke bud anymore but we like it when you guys smoke bud!” Having just watched VH1’s career retrospective on Cheech and Chong a couple nights earlier, it was hard not to think of Chong alerting his audience, “We’re a lot funnier when you’re stoned, man!” Within moments, Coyne was delivering his lines from atop the shoulders of a giant gorilla. Some gags never lose their charm, especially if, you know
After tearing apart a sold out Wiltern, LAist faves from France, Phoenix popped into KCRW for a wonderful hour with Jason Bentley on Morning Becomes Eclectic. Addressing demand, the band returns to The City of Angels on September 16. They're playing The Greek.
It takes real strength to come to America and sell out concerts singing in your native tongue. I mean, how many people in the world let alone America speak Icelandic? Not very many. And yet, Sigur Ros sold out nearly all of their North American shows including last Thursday's gig at the Greek Theater. It should inspire hope in Albanian bands, Slovakian bands, Sri Lankan bands, and any other that you can conquer American hearts without singing in English, Spanish, French or any other more popular language. If (and there is an if) you are brilliantly talented musicians. Sigur Ros is a testament to the fact that music transcends all boundaries and all barriers. People will feel it in their bones, in their souls, and in their very cores. It binds and defines us together as human beings. Review continued below photo gallery
I have a list of things I want to do in Los Angeles pages long. It changes by the season, by the year and most certainly by recommendations given to me by friends. One thing remains constant, exploring Los Angeles and all of its nooks and crannies makes me appreciate this town so much more than I ever could have imagined. For all of the hoopla and stigmas attached with being in LA, it's thrilling...
Toward the end of his Greek Theater appearance on Wednesday, Stevie Wonder called for his daughter – “Aisha!!!” – as a familiar drum/bass line crept out of the background, and the band swung into Isn’t She Lovely, the song written about her some thirty-odd years ago. For a few seconds, the Jumbotron screens were filled with the two of them, Stevie bobbing back and forth intensely, Aisha gazing at him with great love as he began to sing.
Stevie Wonder never ceases to amaze. He is a true icon, a kind spirit, and funny. The man is really funny and the crowd loves him. I think the concert of the summer has to be Stevie Wonder at the Greek this past Wednesday. I'm not just saying that because I went with a superfan who drove all the way from Colorado to see this show or because everyone seemed to know every word and Stevie hardly let us sit for a few minutes before everyone would be back on their feet singing along with him. The only downside, no cameras allowed! I snuck mine in, of course, but I heard they were kicking people out who took pictures and I simply couldn't bear that thought, so not that many pictures were able to be taken.
Really, who doesn't love robot sounds and music about outer space? The 900 Number sample at 2:49 ain't bad either. This is clearly the Beastie Boys' world and we're just livin' in it. Ps: Adam Yauch is a dreamboat....

When Licensed to Ill came out in 1986 I was selling car stereos at the Federated Group in West LA. I sold so many good speakers and subwoofers thanks to "Brass Monkey" and "Slow & Low" that oftentimes my favorite demo tape would go "missing". I bought at least six of those tapes within a year. Only a few had been stolen, the rest had gotten worn out. So when the Beasties played the...
British pop new-wavers, Squeeze, have (mostly) reunited and they feel so good. Did you know that Molly Ringwald had a Squeeze poster in her Sixteen Candles room? Did you know that the dreamy blonde lifeguard who worked with me at summer camp had a copy of 45’s and Under in his car. Did you know I can play Yankee Doodle on a ukulele? Slightly subversive post-punk with an energetic and upbeat sound, Squeeze makes...
Stevie Wonder will hit the road this month for a 13 city U.S. tour. The man who just called to say I love you will kick off his tour, dubbed "Wonder's Summer Night," in San Diego at Humphrey's on August 23. Wonder announced the details of the tour Thursday afternoon at a press conferenced in Century City. Those who were lucky enough to be in Century City this afternoon were treated to a mini-concert from...
As the hills in Los Feliz and Griffith Park burn, we passed by this grassy median at Los Feliz Blvd. and Vermont where we saw this gentleman laying on his back watching the fire inbetween snores. We got as close to the fire as they would allow us and we took this video and other pictures below. If you've got photos, upload them on Flickr and tag them laist and we will possibly include...
Before Nirvana there was Sonic Youth and this summer there will be nirvana at The Greek when Sonic Youth plays their entire Daydream Nation album. If June 20th isn't marked on your calendar you probably shouldn't enter this contest. We have a pair of tickets for this show. We also have two posters for the winner as well. To enter tell us a story about Sonic Youth. Tell us what the show is going...

Set right in the middle of Griffith Park, the Greek Theater is one of LA's best venues. The audience is surrounded by beautiful trees typical LA inhabitants don't get to see enough of, the sound and lighting is great, and there isn't a bad seat in the house. And although 5,000 fans forced into assigned seating may not be the preferable arena to watch three bands that either make you wanna shake your hips and do that little indie rock dance, the seating arrangement didn't seem to make a difference at all last night.
There are very few better places to be on a Thursday night in LA than tucked away up in Griffith Park at the Greek Theater.
Yesterday the Parks Department revealed a draft master plan for Griffith Park, and we say it looks like one fun makeover. Included in the 25-year, wish-list-y proposal are a landscaped pier along the LA River and many improved natural wildlife corridors. The wow element is not one but two arial trams, one of which is designed to sweep over the LA Zoo (although the LA Times indicates that the zoo folks aren't keen on the idea). The other tram would start at the Greek Theater and ascend to the Griffith Observatory: Would it be so unusual to start out listening to Tom Jones from above and wind up where James Dean pulled a knife on his rivals in Rebel Without A Cause? We say no. It would be so very LA.
