The Irvine City Council has approved a lease with a local farmer that will see to it 114 acres of Great Park be developed as an urban community farm. This is the first time farming will be taking place on the land that is Great Park since wealthy rancher James Irvine sold the land he used to farm lima beans to the US Government for them to use as the Marine Corps Air Station at El Toro.

Lately, Orange County Great Park's balloon has been looking a bit sad, faded and, well, not so great. This is not the condition you want your symbol and main attraction to be in. But not to fear, a new envelope--this one with UV protected pigment--will be installed over the next few days by a crew of thirty people. Internal illumination will also be installed for better nighttime viewing.

Irvine's effort to turn the former 4,700-acre El Toro Marine Corps Air Station into the 21st Century's famed park just got a major boost. $65.5 million in construction projects were approved yesterday, paving the way for facilities to open in 2010 and 11.
