Great Northern, The Dears @ Echoplex 5/23/09

             + 10 more

At first glance, the pairing of Great Northern and Dears seems like an unlikely duo to grace the same stage. Still, there they were on May 23, each taking their turn trying to wow the Echoplex crowd who learned, after a sometimes amazing, but more often average show, that the bands' similarities far outweigh their differences. more ›

Various Artists - Plastic Snow | Great Tunes, Even Greater Cause

Los Angeles-based music blog Confession of a Would-Be Hipster has compiled its first compilation, appropriately entitled Plastic Snow, just in time for the holidays. The sixteen-track disc features wintry tunes by some of the best bands the local music scene has to offer, including Great Northern, Earlimart (LAist Review, #2), Princeton (LAist Interview), Pierre de Reeder (of Rilo Kiley fame), The Monolators (LAist Review), Let's Go Sailing (LAist Interview, Review) and Letting Up Despite Great Faults. And as if that impressive cast wasn't enough, 100% of the profits from Plastic Snow go to benefit Los Angeles' longest running homeless shelter, Midnight Mission. Dropping a measly ten dollars has never felt so good! more ›

Stoking the flames of independence, KCRW released its latest compilation album from live Morning Becomes Eclectic performances cut from twelve different in-studio acts. Crowd pleasers like The Shins and The Swell Season imbibe the album with not so new takes on their even older songs while Spoon and Indie Brits, The Orange Lights dig deep into their live repertoire to deliver interesting versions of their already strong songs. more ›

Everest's Top Ten of 2007

Everest's Top Ten of 2007

I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their little world. Therefore, this is an act of paying it forward to those hardworking, underpaid musicians who truly made a difference within the music scene this year. more ›

Extra Extra: Somebody Please Give Sad Bear A Hug!

The man responsible for killing a woman and her two young children in a street-racing accident last month has been tracked down and arrested in Mexico; Martin Marones is expected to be charged with three counts of murder. So many questions! Has "Heroes: Origins" been shelved? Or just "postponed" due to the writers strikes? Will we ever find out who's been offing the group of twelve? And what's up with this ADAM guy??? Great Northern Sleepy Eepee Contest

Great Northern Sleepy Eepee Contest

I hate contests. Hate. LAist doesn't need them, lots of you don't appreciate them, it's not what big blogs do, and we have quietly become a big blog in this town. But I love Great Northern. Love. I first saw them at SXSW in March, and it's been nice to watch them get on the cover of the Weekly (and the drummer at that), and it's great to see them continue to make good... more ›

Low vs. Diamond @ Viper Room 11/2/2007

When Low vs. Diamond's lead singer Lucas Field sauntered on the stage and meekly opened the show with "Life After Love," I knew immediately that despite the head bobbing and dancing from a few, LvD’s live act would neither expand upon its sound nor translate to the crowd what exactly they were trying to do. more ›

Big in '08 Addendum

Big in '08 Addendum

LA Times staffer and Buzz Bands blogger Kevin Bronson's story "Taking the L.A. indie rock scene personally" hit stands last Thursday. By means of an intimate portrayal, Bronson set forth his pick of indie rock up-and-comers for L.A.'s indie rock scene in 2008. While I completely admire that he would put his neck out there for three rather small, entirely worthy bands (The Airborne Toxic Event, Castledoor, and The Deadly Syndrome) at the forefront of... more ›

Free PDA with Ladytron and Great Northern

Global Inheritance, a multi-faceted non-for-profit (also involved in this weekend's Swerve Fest) is back with their second in a series of Public Displays of Affection. Last October's inaugural PDA event fully vindicated the subways-are-fun philosophy lifestyle -- with DJ's, dancing, and a live set from Secret Machines.... more ›

Veils and Comas @ Spaceland, 6/29/07

So I went to see The Veils play with The Comas last Friday at Spaceland. I have been an Echo-show-goer so much more lately that I didn't even know (or forgot) that Spaceland removed that first middle wall, which cut back on available seats, but made the whole place seem a lot bigger. Asher went on first and their sound reminded me a little bit of Keane, but unfortunately without the soaring vocals, and... more ›
