Small Grass Fire Near Mulholland Drive Quickly Extinguished

See some smoke in the hills? A fire 40-foot by 40-foot grass fire was knocked down by Los Angeles Fire Fighters in 18 minutes this afternoon. The fire, first reported at 1:59 p.m., was located at 9785 Trudy Drive, south of Mulholland Drive between Beverly Glen and Coldwater Canyon.

Teen Arrested for Starting 475-Acre Fire in Yucaipa

That fire that began yesterday afternoon in Yucaipa apparently was arson and the arsonist has already been caught. A group of witnesses told police they saw a teenager flee on a bicycle near the fire's origin. The teen was soon found by Sheriff's deputies. The blaze began yesterday afternoon at 4:39 p.m. in the Crafton Hills area of Yucaipa and burned towards Mentone. It's currently 475 acres in size and 60 percent contained.

Small Vegetation Fire Knocked Down in Granada Hills

Didn't this burn last year, like twice? A small vegetation fire reported to the fire department at 12:48 p.m. burned a half-acre inside O'Melvany Park, just south of Sunshine Canyon in Granada Hills today. The park is located at the eastern end of the Santa Susana Mountains, site of the 14,703-acre Sesnon Fire from last year October. The Los Angeles Fire Department deployed not only ground crews, but an air attack, snuffing out today's fire in 29 minutes.

Brush Fire Near Silver Lake, 1 Dead in Westwood Blvd. Crash

The Los Angeles Fire Department had two larger events during the 11 a.m. hour this morning. The first was near Silver Lake on Fletcher near Riverside Dr. where about one half acre of grass and brush burned near structures, but firefighters were able to knock it down in just less than 20 minutes at 11:43 a.m. No one was injured and no buildings were damaged. On Westwood Blvd. near the 10 Freeway, a car crash left one person dead, four injured and two or three dogs with unknown injuries. Three people, including the deceased, were trapped in their vehicle before units arrived on scene to rescue them.

A small grass fire during the 8:00 a.m. hour lit up near Victory and Woodley along the Orange Line this morning at the north end of the Sepulveda Basin. One Los Angeles fire company responded and quickly knocked the fire down. The current red flag warning ends at 8:00 p.m.

The near 45-acre brush fire raging between the Getty Museum and Mount St. Mary's College has prompted the California Highway Patrol to close the 405 Freeway in both directions between Skirball Center Drive in the Sepulveda Pass and Sunset Blvd., according to CHP officials and updates via an online log. 405 north and southbound traffic is being diverted to the 10 Freeway and Valley Vista Rd. in Sherman Oaks, respectively.

At 12:24 a.m., a pickup truck crashed down an embankment off the 210 Freeway near Osborne St. in the Northeast Valley. It started a one acre grass fire. But not to worry, LA firefighters knocked down the fire in 32 minutes and no one was injured. Phew!

Watch out Dodgertown! A grass fire ignited this afternoon just outside the Dodger Stadium parking lot at 1502 N Boylston St, according to the LA Fire Department. But not to worry, only a half acre burned before 22 firefighters knocked down the small blaze in 38 minutes. No one was injured and no structures were damaged.

A malfunctioning transformer caused a small grass fire and some power outages at LAX late this morning. The outage is affecting three international flights on the remote West end of the airport as DWP workers move to restore power to the area. The planes, each are carrying over 200 passengers to Tokyo, Santiago and Shanghai, cannot leave their gates because the attached pedestrian walkways need electricity to detach.

Records were broken yesterday around California and the hot weather is not looking to take a break this weekend. "The Valley is supposed to be a sweltering miasma of heat this weekend. Temperatures could hit triple digits," the Daily News reports in an interactive weather map for the Valley. But over the hill in the basin, temperatures are not as bad due to the afternoon sea breeze. LAX only hit 77 yesterday and Downtown was in the mid 80s, according to the LA Times.

Yesterday's fire was knocked down quickly, but it started to bring back memories of last year, almost to date. The big 2007 wildfire charred 800 acres, but when yesterday's fire began, the Los Angeles Fire Department went aggressively after it, sending four helicopters and 262 firefighters (LA County sent an additional helicopter as well).
