How Much Could Re-Greenifying City Hall Lawn Cost? $400K.

Occupy L.A.'s tent city invasion of the once lush City Hall lawn is under much scrutiny for its devastating effects on the grass. L.A. officials claim that lawn repair could cost the city up to $400,000. The current brownish shade of the greenish two acres is evidence of maintenance neglect. more ›

LAX Customs Agents Not Playing Any Reindeer Games

LAX Customs Agents Not Playing Any Reindeer Games

A couple of reindeer won't be passing along their holiday cheer in Los Angeles this week after being seized by Customs and Border Protection agents at LAX, reports CBS2. Not real reindeer, mind you--these were decorative items made of grass brought in by a passenger from El Salvador, confiscated because " the grass seeds were viable and showed signs of being diseased." Since Christmas is about spreading love and joy and not "microbial blights," the CBP were just looking out for everyone's well-being. PS: If you've got someone coming in from out of the country better remind them now to leave their food, plants, and grass reindeer behind. more ›

New Park for Downtown Residents Looking Like an Old Park

New Park for Downtown Residents Looking Like an Old Park

When the new LAPD Police Administration Building opened last Fall, a park was gifted to the community. But it wasn't too long before it was blocked off to the public for two weeks to make way for a Los Angeles Police Foundation gala. When all was said and done, the equipment used ruined the grass, leaving it brown and muddy during wet weather. Eric Richardson at blogdowntown has been following the lack of progress, finding that repairs should start with a few weeks at the expense of the foundation. Also, the palm trees are not doing so well, but police, who are in charge of the park rather than Parks & Rec, say that's a separate issue. more ›

One day after new lawn watering regulations went into effect, the LA Department of Water and Power announced a program to encourage residents to replace their traditional bitch thirsty green grass lawns with ones filled with drought tolerant plants. You're not going to make loads of money, but it's a good step for the department to take, nonetheless. From their news release: more ›

Sign of the Times: OC Cities Look to Unban Fake Grass

What once was considered maybe tacky is now considered smart and green, especially these days with a better more real looking product. Fountain Valley in Orange County is looking into lifting a ban on artificial turf in an effort to let residents save tens of thousands of gallons of water a year among other things. "Fountain Valley's decision follows discussion by Garden Grove officials about lifting a ban on artificial turf on residential properties," reported the OC Register. "The council last month postponed a vote on the matter, asking staff to get more information about the fake grass." There will be certain rules one color, fading and that plastic or nylon carpeting turf would still be prohibited. more ›

Weed Review: Trainwreck

We bought this from a dude's Toyota trunk in a dollar store parking lot for $50 an 8th. Trainwreck is a toker's favorite, with its unique flavor and powerful high who can blame them? This sativa blend is rumored to have originated out of Humboldt, CA. Pre-Smoke Examination: The nugs come in all sizes, from the pictured above, to little pebble sized nugs no bigger than a US dime. The buds are fresh, and... more ›

Marijuana Dispensary On The Rebound

Marijuana Dispensary On The Rebound

In the face of DEA raids, and LAPD cooperation with the feds, the California Patients Group (one of the 10 raided dispensaries) released this statement to it's patients: The campaign to defend safe access to medical cannabis is a risky one, and we have always known we could face the wrath of our federal government for taking a principled stand for people suffering from AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and other serious illnesses. Yesterday [July... more ›
