Snow In SoCal, The Photographic Evidence
Not to be outdone by the East Coast's end of days, Southern California welcomed some new flakes of its own today when snow levels dropped to about 1,300 feet coating Santa Clarita, Valencia and other L.A. surrounding areas. Thanks to all the winter-loving locals who thought to take photos while slipping and sliding.
Hail, Snow, Black Ice Force Closure of Grapevine
With gusty winds that could reach 70 MPH expected to last into tonight, the I-5's Grapevine section has been reeling from dangerous driving conditions since early this morning. "Shortly after 7:30 a.m., the California Highway Patrol closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, and then about 8:15 a.m. shut down the northbound lanes at Vista del Lago," reports LA Now. The CHP has already been called about 20 accidents in the area, and reported conditions on the heavily-traveled section of freeway include ice, hail, snow, and black ice. More on today's windy weather.
Weather Check: Rain Expected Tomorrow, Snow Levels to Drop
The rain is headed back and the National Weather Service is expecting it to hit the Los Angeles area beginning tomorrow, persisting through the night. That could mean another half to one-inch in the coastal and valley areas and up to 1.5 inches in the foothills and lower elevations of the mountains, which means more concern for mudslide prone areas. At higher elevations, snow levels are expected to drop drastically between 3,500 to 4,000 feet tomorrow afternoon and then as low as 2,000 feet overnight. That means the Grapevine could be facing a possible closure in addition to some snowball fights on the Antelope Valley floor. There's also a slight chance of rain on Friday. Otherwise, expect clear skies with highs in 60s and lows in the upper 40s throughout the week.
Weekend Weather Check: Some Rain & A Lot of Snow
There's still more rain to come, says the National Weather Service, which predicts a real chance of rain by Friday afternoon and evening, persisting through the night and into Saturday morning with a chance of thunderstorms. As for today, expect mostly cloudy skies and cool temperatures--highs in the low 60s. About 1 to 2 inches of rain in the coastal/valley areas and 2 to 4 in the foothills/mountains are predicted to fall. As for snow, it's good news for boarders: the snow level should drop to 7,000 feet on Friday and then to 4,500 on Saturday. Over a foot is expected at resort level, with less than 6 inches below 6,000 feet, probably sparing the Grapevine from closure.
Snow Forces the 'Long-Term, Hard Closure' of Grapevine
The California Highway Patrol this afternoon has closed a portion of the 5 freeway in both directions in the Grapevine due to snow. "Snow is sticking to the roadway from Frazier Mountain Park to one mile south of Gorman making travel hazardous at this time," an advisory stated. "Northbound I-5 has been closed at Vista Del Lago and southbound I-5 has been closed at the Grapevine. Escorts are not being provided at this time and a decision on when to reopen the roadway has not been made."
Grapevine Lanes in Both Directions Reopen
Ice and snow prompted the closure of the 5 Freeway's Grapevine this morning, but lanes in both directions were quickly reopened by officials a couple hours later, according to KNX1070. The National Weather Service says snow would reach as low as 3,000 feet in the latest storm. The Grapevine's highest point is about 4,500 feet.

5 Freeway Still Closed in the Grapevine [Updated]
Closed since 5:30 p.m. yesterday, the 5 Freeway through the Grapevine remains closed this morning. It may open around 10 a.m., according to an ABC7 tweet. The closure is between Grapevine and Smokey Bear roads. UPDATE: Officers will be escorting a group of 500 cars through the Grapevine around 9:30 a.m., according to Officer Heather Holglund. UPDATE 2: At 11:30 a.m., the 5 was reopened.
Brush Fire off 5 Freeway Shuts Down 2 Lanes
Another day, another fire. This year's fire season in Southern California may have gotten off to a slow start, things are beginning to pick up. Two fires--the Oak and Marshall fires--burned in and near the Angeles National Forest within the last 24 hours. This afternoon, a new one began near Pyramid Lake in the Grapevine. A first, it was reported to be rather small, then more than 100 acres and now over 350 acres according to KNX1070 on air. At least two northbound lanes on the 5 freeway have been closed. Also: A larger fire has burned around 1300 acres at Camp Pendleton.

At Least 27 Injured in Grapevine Car Crash*
At least 27 people were hurt after a runaway truck carrying hazardous materials triggered an 11-vehicle collision amid heavy fog on the northbound I-5 freeway near Fort Tejon this afternoon. Only 11 of the injured required hospitalization, and four of those people were hurt badly, according to NBC4. All lanes were closed on the northbound 5 and traffic was rerouted at the 138 (map). All lanes were reopened to traffic around 4 p.m. but heavy fog is forecast for the region so be prepared to slow down. Pay attention to those signs and if you're were planning on traveling tonight, check radio reports before you leave. *Update: Earlier reports of four fatalities and 11 in critical condition remain unconfirmed.

The Usual Holiday Grapevine Traffic
Anyone who travels north via The 5 during holidays knows once you start hitting the northern part of the Santa Clarita Valley (a few minutes past Magic Mountain), traffic backs up, making it a slow hump over the Grapevine. Caltrans warns of why traffic will be additionally heavy these next thirteen holiday days:
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) advises motorists planning to travel on the Golden State Freeway (Interstate 5) in north Los Angeles County to plan ahead, leave early to avoid holiday-related heavy traffic -- due to an ongoing lane closure on northbound I-5 at Templin Highway, (approximately five miles north of Castaic). The lane closure is due to ongoing storm-related slope stabilization and roadway repairs.more ›
