The long-awaited Silver Lake Branch Library is finally open. With hundreds packing it in at the grand opening ceremony this morning, the library soon cleared out leaving room for families in the kids corner, internet surfers, locals looking for books and at least one guy blogging on LAist (yes, there is WiFi here and outlets for laptop power). more ›

Yesterday, the Annenberg Community Beach House opened to the public for the first time. Run by the City of Santa Monica, the public club-like beach and recreational facility sits on property once purchased for movie star Marion Davies by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Although only the guest cottages and pool remain from the original structures (sadly the 110-room Julia Morgan-designed manse was demolished decades ago), a ten-year restoration and re-purposing plan is finally done, and now everyone can enjoy use of the beach, the tennis and volleyball courts, the rec rooms, and the marble-tiled pool all on a beachfront property that was once the playground of the stars. more ›

Hollywood loves a good cream puff. Or at least that's what the folks at Beard Papa hope. The latest location of this international cream-pufferie opens this week at Hollywood & Highland (otherwise known to some cynics as the crossroads of "Too Much" and "Too Late"). A store just for cream puffs? Apparently, these aren't just any puffs. The folks at Beard Papa's make their very own two-layer choux pastry for the shells daily on the premises. Then, when you place your order, you can watch as they stuff your shell with their whipped cream custard. The filling is also made on the premises; it's a two hour process that gets underway about 4-6 times a day, and uses natural vanilla beans for flavoring. Our friends at Gothamist drooled over BP last year, so we're thinking perhaps there's more than fluff and filling to these little pastries. This Saturday, the Hollywood & Higland location is having their Grand Opening celebration, starting at 10 a.m. We might even be persuaded to re-introduce bread and sugar into our diet for such a special occasion. more ›
