It's National Cold Cuts Day. That term has always brought to mind those not very fresh, tasteless sandwich fillers served at large functions that you eat because you don't want to eat only macaroni salad. With the beef recall, dashing to your local butcher for some cold cuts sounds less appetizing than ever. However, the term "cold cuts" can include cheese and that's where you can freely celebrate.

Okay, so Long Beach doesn't pack the same exotic pull as, oh, say, Rio, but they're going to put on a Carnaval and pull out all the stops. Get out your Carnaval costumes and get ready to samba the night away! This year’s theme is “Preservation of the Planet” featuring green and recycled decorations. At the heart of the 2008 celebration is renowned Bahiana Dandara, musicians performing vibrant and energetic Carnaval beats. Music and bare booties abound!

Hoping to reach out to Latino voters, Barack Obama is using Spanish-language television advertising on Telemundo and Univision here in Los Angeles.

"Paper or Plastic?" is the somewhat innocuous and expected question we're faced each time we check out at the grocery store. But what if that question came with a price tag, like 15 cents for every plastic bag we required when making a purchase? Or what if we banned the bag altogether?

Sen. Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have spent the past couple days traipsing around the Golden State uncomfortably responding to allegations that their campaign is connected to a lawsuit brought last week by the Nevada teacher's union that would prevent casino workers from caucusing on the job.

Just because the federal government can legally rob a medical marijuana dispensary in Los Angeles, it doesn't mean you can too. On Friday, in two separate incidents in the Valley, a dispensary on Cahuenga Boulevard in North Hollywood and Golden State Collective, 10369 Balboa Blvd., in Granada Hills, both got robbed in takeovers. On Sunday, the Granada Hills robbers were caught, according to the Daily News:

During the heist, one shot was fired, ricocheting off the floor and breaking a window. No one was injured.

"Imaginary Places" - Busdriver (and excellent vid filmed on the streets of LA and a great piece too)

Anyone who travels north via The 5 during holidays knows once you start hitting the northern part of the Santa Clarita Valley (a few minutes past Magic Mountain), traffic backs up, making it a slow hump over the Grapevine. Caltrans warns of why traffic will be additionally heavy these next thirteen holiday days:

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) advises motorists planning to travel on the Golden State Freeway (Interstate 5) in north Los Angeles County to plan ahead, leave early to avoid holiday-related heavy traffic -- due to an ongoing lane closure on northbound I-5 at Templin Highway, (approximately five miles north of Castaic). The lane closure is due to ongoing storm-related slope stabilization and roadway repairs.

Lakers 123, Warriors 113 - We're still pretty sure this is a .500 team masquerading with an occasional good run, and now even their Phil Jackson is down on Kobe and Co. The Laker's coach told the media that a 50-win season is out of reach. His squad, however, responded by out-scoring the nation's hottest team on Sunday night. Kobe Bryant led the way with 28 and both Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum hit double...

But first - Kobe vetoed a trade! Baseball in the Coliseum - Just after it was announced that the Red Sox will open the exhibition season against Oakland in Japan, the Dodgers confirmed that the defending World Champs would play three games against the Blue Crew. The cool part? One of the games will be in the Coliseum as part of the Dodger's 50th anniversary in Los Angeles. Yes, it can be configured that way...

Coyotes 1, Ducks 0 - The Duck's road problems have come home to roost. They were held scoreless against lowly Phoenix in Anaheim last night and couldn't convert on six power plays. Four players -- Ryan Getzlaf, Rob Niedermayer, Mathieu Schneider and Todd Bertuzzi -- missed the game due to injury. Kings 2, Stars 1 - Los Angeles finally snapped a nine game losing streak to Dallas. It also marked the first time in two...

Chivas USA 0, FC Dallas 0 - LA's top team hasn't lost since July, earning a draw last night with Dallas. Brad Guzan had his MLS-leading 12th save to increase Chivas' lead in the Western Conference to four points with two games left to play. Unfortunately, Chivas was unable to capitalize on a one man advantage for the last ten minutes of the match. Warriors 119, Lakers 106 - Ahhh, preseason. 14 of 15 Lakers...

Ducks 2, Bruins 1 - After managing just one win in five road games to start the season, the defending Stanley Cup Champions returned home on Wednesday to take care of some business. Boston led from the first minute until a third-period comeback, when the Anaheim looked a little more like their championship form. Dallas 5, Kings 1 - This was familiar. Dallas swept the season series 8-0 last year, and maintained their form into...

Brandon Schott’s CD release party at Bordello in downtown Los Angeles last Saturday night was like something out of Moulin Rouge! Backed by a string quartet and 11 other musicians, Schott—a singer and multi-instrumentalist—performed his new CD, Golden State, in its entirety and threw in a few surprises as well. And did I mention there were belly dancers?...

2,000 DWP customers lost power today in Sun Valley. At noon, power was threatened to be cut from large energy consumers. But as the afternoon progressed, the Stage 2 was unlikely to happen. Yes, this is a heat wave. At age 18, having a DUI conviction, being a tagger and dealing in drugs is bound to get you caught up in murder charges in Van Nuys. A brush fire broke out in Castaic today...

B-Dizzle Up-Dizzle - LA's last hope is out of the NBA playoffs. The Utah Jazz beat the Golden State Warriors 100-87 and took the series in five games. It was a battle until the end, and we mean battle.  There were 50 personal fouls, 31 against the Warriors. Several were flagrants and technicals. Ducks 5, Red Wings 0 - After stealing home ice advantage with a split in Hockeytown, USA, the Ducks were cooked when they...

You can still root for LA's Golden Boy. After leading the Warriors to one of the greatest series upsets in the history of American sports (eighth seeded Golden State knocked off top ranked Dallas in six), Baron Davis went from star to hero. It looked like he might be headed for further greatness against Utah, but on Sunday things took a turn for the worse. He was held to 15 points as the Jazz...

Braves 4, Dodgers 0 - Atlanta jumped out to an early lead, which is something you don't want to give John Smoltz. The starter-turned-closer-turned-starter hurled seven shutout innings just ten days ahead of his 40th birthday. The Jones boys (Andruw and Chipper) didn't produce a hit, but combined for three walks and scored three runs. The Dodgers had ten base runners and even juiced the bases in the fourth with nobody out. Smoltz still held...

Clippers 103, Suns 99 - The sun hasn't set on the Clipper's playoff hopes yet. Los Angeles surprised Phoenix, who played their regular starters despite a lock on the #2 seed in the West. The Clippers need to beat New Orleans (a/k/a Oklahoma City) on Wednesday and root for Portland to beat Golden State. That scenario would tie them with the Warriors at .500. The teams split their season series, but the Clippers would advance...

Clippers 118, Lakers 110 - Go big or go home, but what if both teams are already home? Then both teams go big. Kobe had another 50 point night and nine rebounds, but was upstaged by Corey Maggette's career high 39 to go with eight rebounds and nine assists and Elton Brand's 32 with 12 rebounds and seven assists. The Lakers were up by 10 in the fourth quarter, but were outscored 26-8 down the...

The Kevin Kanner Quintet, The Parker String Quartet @ The Mint

Rockets 107, Lakers 104, OT - When you have Kobe on your team, you want him to take the critical shots. You want him to take a lot of shots, period. Kobe took so many (44) that he had 53 points and made a clutch off-balance three pointer to send the game to overtime. Unfortunately, he "only" made 19 of his shots and missed a critical three pointer at the end of overtime. Clippers 105,...

While Kobe had an “off night” when he put up 43 against Golden State on Sunday, breaking his streak of games scoring 50 or more at four, he could return to his high scoring ways tonight against Memphis. The same Memphis he dropped 60 on last week.

Lakers 115, Warriors 113 - Kobe joked about having an "off-night" after scoring 43 against Golden State, the first time in five games that he failed to reach the 50 mark. The Lakers have won all five of those games to recover from a seven game losing streak that was the worst of Phil Jackson's career. Kobe also had nine rebounds in the winning effort, but contributed seven turnovers to the Laker's season high 24....

The Lakers continued their five-game winning streak with Sunday night’s 115-113 win over the Golden State Warriors. Kobe Bryant did not stretch his 50+ points game streak to five, scoring (only) 43 points. Lamar Odom was also instrumental with 24 points and 19 rebounds. The game turned out to be a nail-biter when Golden State’s Stephen Jackson dropped a three-pointer with 1.9 seconds to go, making it a one-point game, but a free throw...

Kobe has already made history in the last week, becoming only the second player ever in the NBA to score 50 or more points in four straight games. Not so coincidentally, those were four Laker wins.

Clipper 103, Bulls 89 - The struggling Clippers defeated a strong Chicago squad despite missing Sam Cassell due to injury. Cuttino Mobley led the way with 25, followed by Corey Maggette with 22. Elton Brand had 21 and 12 rebounds. Los Angeles is essentially even with Golden State for the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference playoffs. Three teams (Dallas, Pheonix, and San Antonio) are already in. Dodgers - LAist discovers that beer...
