Tonight In Rock: La Roux, Girl Talk, The Glitch Mob, The Golden Filter

Tonight London-based electro-pop duo La Roux will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the Troubadour. Pennsylvanian mash-up king Girl Talk (LAist Review, #2) is poised to headline the Pomona Fox Theater with LAist favorites Brother Reade (LAist Interview, Review) and Walter Meego (LAist Review) in tow. And, lastly, Brooklyn-based electronic act the Golden Filter will be gracing the Avalon in Hollywood. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Roxy to catch local electronic mastermind Nosaj Thing. The Glitch Mob are slated to headline. more ›

The Top 10 Albums I Didn't Review in 2008

I missed the boat on getting as many CDs reviewed as I wanted to in 2008 (a subtle hint at a 2009 resolution of mine) so here are some stellar albums that deserve more than the short mention they are receiving below: more ›

I'm Thankful: Farley Elliott

I'm Thankful: Farley Elliott

There’s so much to be thankful for this year, as I celebrate my first anniversary of being in Los Angeles. I’m thankful my house got robbed. Now my Luddite existence enables me to understand the joys of pen and paper, and what it means to have to get your porn from a liquor store and not a website. more ›

Girl Talk @ The Henry Fonda Theater, 10/25

"I've been stretching for a week for this shit," pronounced a very excited young man in green next to me, to anyone who would listen. "I did yoga. I did Pilates. Hell, I did Pilates twice! I am ready." Yes, the simmer of excitement that radiated from the crowd was palpable on Saturday night at the Fonda. These kids were dressed up and ready to dance. As the billing promised, "All ages" did show up at the Girl Talk show. From kids that looked like they had just hit puberty to a few elderly party-goers had all turned up to dance the night away. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Girl Talk, Devin the Dude, Presidents of the United States of America, The Acorn

Tonight In Rock: Girl Talk, Devin the Dude, Presidents of the United States of America, The Acorn

Tonight LA locals Seasons and Les Blanks will be rocking out at Echo Curio. We accidentally listed it yesterday and, in actuality, it will go down tonight. The Keyclub will play host to the Houston-based hip hop artist Devin the Dude, who is currently touring in support of 2008's Landing Gear. LA-based indie rockers Voxhaul Broadcast and Local Natives will be in Downtown for the Zero Film Festival. And, lastly, it will be a rather Canadian affair tonight at Spaceland with indie folk rockers the Acorn and Ohbijou. But we could never pass up a chance to see Greg Gillis practically destroy a reinforced Toughbook laptop with his rigorous sampling. Anyone who is anyone will be at the Henry Fonda Music Box for Girl Talk. more ›

Creative Commons Benefit: Spoon @ The Henry Fonda Theater, 9/10/07

Last night Spoon played alongside Kool Keith at the Henry Fonda Theatre. Need I say more? Oh and it was for a great cause! Both artists rocked out to raise money for the non-profit organization Creative Commons. This was the third time they've held a CC Benefit. Prior CC Benefits featured David Byrne, Gilberto Gil, Girl Talk, Diplo, and Peeping Tom. I had no idea who was opening this special event until I arrived... more ›

Dance Dance Revolution - Girl Talk @ Coachella

Dance Dance Revolution - Girl Talk @ Coachella

Red Hot Chili Who? The Good The Bad And The Wha? Clearly, the belle of this year’s 104 degree ball was Pittburgian genius, Greg Gillis, aka Girl Talk. This master sampler/DJ/remixer melted faces on Saturday night with his awe-inspiring, intense nonsense -- super creations of musical hybrids -- a dozen songs spliced together to create something overwhelmingly familiar and entirely new. Energy, energy and more energy -- a giant screen flashed four frames reading... more ›
