Sometimes, concert going does not go as well as one would hope. For instance, this reviewer had high hopes of bringing LAist readers the entire line-up of the KROQ Acoustic Christmas Night 2. Instead, I was kicked out for not having the right photo pass after Cage the Elephant's set. more ›

Feist & Spoon to Face Off at the Gibson

Feist & Spoon to Face Off at the Gibson

It's a dream date for fans of Canadian songstress Feist and Austin's Spoon. Feist is just now making her break on the world stage, with a little help from Uncle Steve. But anyone with an ear to the Toronto indie rock scene could hear her coming ever since her solo debut, Monarch, was released on the heels of By Divine Right's "Bless This Mess" Tour (she was their rhythm guitarist). For most of this... more ›

Rick Springthorpe @ Universal Amphitheatre, 8/3/07

Rick Springthorpe @ Universal Amphitheatre, 8/3/07

So, Friday night I’m in my car headed towards the El Rey to see legendary punks The Slits. I’m excited. For my money, The Slits are one of the truly essential bands to emerge from the London “Class of ‘77”. I’m almost there, when my cell phone rings. “I have two free tickets – Row AA in the Orchestra Pit - for Rick Springfield at the Universal Amphitheatre.” (Actually, he said Gibson Amphitheatre, but in my mind, it will always be the Universal Amphitheatre.) more ›

Was the Greek Theatre Damaged by the Fire?

Was the Greek Theatre Damaged by the Fire?

While we're unaware of any specific damage to the Greek Theatre, we're certain it's littered with ash and smells-like-burning. So is Nederlander, the production company that books shows at the Greek. Tomorrow night's Loreena McKennitt concert has been moved to the Gibson Amphitheatre. Today's cooler temps helped firefighters get the Griffith Park fire under control. After consuming over 800 acres, the fire is 50 75 percent contained and will hopefully be entirely contained within... more ›

Weekend Music Picks

Weekend Music Picks

Fri 5/5 - Islands @ The El Rey ($12) – Montreal’s Islands are an eccentric indie pop band that formed out of the ashes of the Unicorns. Don’t hold that against them, they’re much better than the Unicorns. The band can still be too cutesy at times (the song “Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby” doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Whitney, Bobby or Curtis Mayfield) but the arrangements are more fleshed out and enjoyable. Underground rappers Busdriver and Subtitle make appearances on the record; maybe they’ll enhance the live show too? Listen to some tracks at Myspace (“Rough Gem” and “Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby” are a good place to start). more ›
