Last Sunday, September 23rd, Dr. Jane Goodall head-lined the International Day of Peace with Roots and Shoots, a global network of youth dedicated to protecting human rights through environment-centered campaigns. Children marched with giant home-made peace puppets as environment and human rights organizations were on hand to provide information and network with locals. Goodall mingled for a while, greeting children and petting dogs before leading the Peace Dove marchers through Griffith Park. After demonstrating......

I probably wouldn't have pointed to Amazon.com as a champion of progressive thought and equality, but what do I know? Gaywired.com reports that Dana Rudolph, publisher of Mombian.com, was interested in entering an Amazon.com contest that offered a prize of $25,000 in college tuition. The recipient of the prize could either be the winner or the winner’s immediate family member, which the website categorized as “his or her spouse, children, grandchildren, parents, grandparents and......

"Constance" by Mr. J. Medeiros of Echo Park Being stuck on the Hollywood Freeway during rush hour, trapped in a metallic expanse of automobiles, counting the minutes of your life that you will never get back on the dashboard clock is a nasty predicament to be in...But that isn't the kind of traffic I'm talking about here. I'm talking about the human traffic -- the trafficking of people. Human cargo. Coerced labor. The exploited......

Some around town feel that it’s hip to dislike KCRW, but this LAist is a fan. It was the music programming that got me at first, but nowadays I’m sure that I listen to as much or more of the news and talk programs as I do the music. Plus, what with the internets and podcasting that all the kids are into these days, I can listen to any show any time I want.......

Los Angeles is a hoops hotbed. Three professional basketball teams play at Staples and three local colleges made it to last year's Big Dance. But just because some of the players come from around the country and overseas, don't think LA needs to poach outside talent. The city boasts an amazing legacy of high school basketball. Local courts are responsible for current pro stars like Baron Davis, Gilbert Arenas, Paul Pierce and Jordan Farmar. Many......

What better way to make flex fuel vehicles and E85 (corn-based ethanol) more hip than by taking several YouTube clips, stirring in some Facebook, MySpace, a Napoleon Dynamite-esque aesthetic and, finally, for good measure a good dollop of Ben Affleck dressed in a corn suit (seriously, just watch it)? Narrated by Phin (who looks suspiciously like a certain silent protagonist), this series of videos, dubbed "Clean My Ride, Flex My Fuel," aims to raise......

Get Involved is a new series of posts of pertinent local meetings where your surroundings might be affected. In that case, speak up! If you cause traffic to lessen traffic, does that make things equal? There's going to be some major construction over in the Westchester/LMU neighborhood over some major lane closures that may extend into the summer. The new project will widen lanes and sidewalks on Lincoln Boulevard in both directions, create four lanes......
