TV Junkie: Lopez Hate Misdirected; Why 'Jersey Shore' on Conan & Jimmy?

TV Junkie: Lopez Hate Misdirected; Why 'Jersey Shore' on Conan & Jimmy?

A wave of hate seem to issue forth when TBS announced its cancellation of "Lopez Tonight." Hey, not everybody is funny to everyone but at least Lopez was providing a funnier and better show for people who might otherwise turn to Leno. --- All this plus the weekend TV Junkie Must-Watch Plan more ›

Does This Influence Your Vote? George Lopez Says He'll Move to Canada if Sarah Palin Wins Presidency

Does This Influence Your Vote? George Lopez Says He'll Move to Canada if Sarah Palin Wins Presidency

Funnyman, deport thyself: "If Sarah Palin becomes president at any point, I would say 'allegedly,' I will move to Canada," comedian George Lopez told CNN's Piers Morgan in an interview (video). Lopez didn't say why he wouldn't head south of the border (we have a few ideas) but he did explain that it's all politics: "I like my politicians to actually have a political background." more ›

Prince Bro-Down with George Lopez Comes to Shreds

Prince Bro-Down with George Lopez Comes to Shreds

Prince is in town. We wouldn't know about this, of course, if not for George Lopez and his late-night show on TBS -- y'know, the one that comes after Conan. On Monday night his purple majesty called in to Lopez Tonight to announce a 21-night stand at The Forum in Inglewood. But Wednesday night Prince got down with Team Loco, performing three songs (including new ones) and rapping with George about everything from Olive Garden to sweatsuits. more ›

George Lo-bama Lopez is a Flip Flopper

George Lo-bama Lopez is a Flip Flopper

George Lopez announced yesterday on Good Day L.A. that he wants to run for Mayor of Los Angeles in 2018. He said that although he might not pass the background check at the moment, he didn't see any reason why he couldn't ultimately become mayor if Arnold Schwarzenegger could become California's Governor. Lopez even deemed himself a "Lo-bama" that would be less focused on effecting change and more focused on collecting actual change in the form of coins. It was all funny. It was all sort of unreal. Some didn't believe it. more ›

Pencil This In: Howard Zinn Tribute, Up in the Air Author at Book Soup, Art in Downey and Klezmer at the Skirball

Howard Zinn was going to speak at SMMoA about his new documentary, The People Speak, which uses dramatic and musical performances of diaries, letters and speeches by everyday Americans to give voice to those who fought for social change. But since his death last week, the event has become a tribute to Zinn instead. The 8 pm event is now full, but a stand-by line opens at 7 pm (seating is not guaranteed). Admission $25; $10 SMMoA members. Proceeds from the event will go to support the Educational Fund of The People Speak, a charitable initiative which brings this powerful documentary into schools and communities free-of-charge. more ›

Heat, Meat, Sweet & Eat: The Great Chefs of LA 2009

             + 22 more

Last Sunday the backlot of CBS Radford Studios in Studio City was filled with some of the biggest names...in food. The 23rd Annual Great Chefs of LA was indeed the promised food and drink filled afternoon of music, swag bags, and auctions, all to benefit the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California. Hosted by comedian and TV star George Lopez, the event drew some celebs (so we hear!) from entertainment and lots of food talent (so we ate!). more ›

TV Junkie: 'V' Settles; George Lopez vs. Wanda Sykes

TV Junkie: 'V' Settles; George Lopez vs. Wanda Sykes

Did any of you tune in to the 2nd episode of "V" last night? We ask because viewership dropped by about 30% from the previous week. Don't get us wrong, we like the series but the drop in ratings made us think a bit more about the program. First of all, they're not really breaking any new ground here and that's fine since the majority of the targeted demographic don't remember the original series at all but we thought there would be more updating to the story other than contemporary babes, hunks, and computer graphics. We'll stay tuned for more but after this we wonder about the remake of the classic and dear-to-our-hearts "The Prisoner", which premieres this Sunday on AMC. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: It's Nick and Nora

Weekend Movie Guide: It's Nick and Nora

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist looks like an ideal date movie for confused and annoying teens. The presence of the awesomely talented Michael Cera, however, insures my aged presence. Beverly Hills Chihuahua looks so awful that it will probably be hilarious. Stoned. I don't much like Bill Maher, but I do like that Bill Maher exists and has a platform on which to vent his spleen. That said, Religulous feels an awful lot like fishing with dynamite. I mean, making fun of the devoutly religious? Is this really cutting edge material? more ›

DVD Tuesday: Crappiest week of year so far

DVD Tuesday: Crappiest week of year so far

Ahead of the Wednesday holiday, the DVD pickings this week are awfully, awfully slim. When the first season of a Sci-Fi channel TV show is the bestselling new DVD on Amazon.com you know you're looking at a fairly dreary list of new titles. A few of them, though, do merit interest either because they're pretty good (Puccini for Beginners) or pretty awful (the Corey's Dream a Little Dream 2). If you're looking for some original Grindhouse double features (not that prettified Weinstein company crap), two twin bills go on sale today. Aside from that, it's a barren week. Next Tuesday looks more promising. more ›

Adios, George Lopez

Adios, George Lopez

Most would think that a five-year-run on a tv series on a major network would be a huge success. Five years would especially seem successful for a show that no one ever talked about, cared about, or even noticed. One that got walloped when put up against the likes of American Idol, and had to be moved to four different time slots. more ›

TV Junkie: 'Lost'; Clap Your Hands Say Yeah on Conan

TV Junkie: 'Lost'; Clap Your Hands Say Yeah on Conan

A Word or 52: Some people hated last week's "useless" Lost because it didn't further the storyline but I thought it was a humorously macabre and welcome break that reminded me of some of the better tangential X-Files episodes from 10+ years ago. If looks like we're going back to that story line tonight, oh well. Jericho (CBS, 8:00 p.m.) Roger goes off the deep end, and who can blame him Friday Night Lights/Crossing... more ›

The Week in Weeklies

The Week in Weeklies

By week's end, this town is regularly littered with a handful of free rags. LAist reads the weeklies so you don't have to. If there's anything we missed, pretty please let us know, or better yet, drop it in the comments section... more ›

TV Junkie: Phyllis Diller Back on the 'Tonight Show'; 'Idol' Deathmarch Continues

A Word or 56: Thankfully I was doing my radio show last night and was spared the State of the Union, and therefore, a really bad hangover. It was (somewhat) reassuring to see some livid polarized response but half the time I feel like these guys are going through the motions. Two ways to disgust yourself tonight are: Crawlspace on IFC and Primetime: Medical Mysteries, enjoy. Tonight - Wednesday - January 24th, 2007 Crawlspace... more ›
