Although her weight gain and amazing loss has been grabbing tabloid headlines as of late, the real news about Melissa Joan Hart is her new sweets shop that just celebrated its grand opening on Saturday in Sherman Oaks. Meet Sweetharts, a whimsically decorated frozen yogurt, gelato, cake, cupcake, hard and soft candy store.

They may be only a fourth mile apart, but both family friendly yogurt chain Menchies and newcomer Sweet Rarts just recently opened in Sherman Oaks' restaurant row. First came the addicting and popular Menchies of Valley Village fame, which opened at Ventura and Dixie Canyon, most appropriately next to an elementary school.

With this latest heat wave, everyone is looking for ways to cool off. Studio City's Gelato Bar on Tujunga is one of our favorite summer spots. The flavors not only change according to the season, but by the day, so sometimes you have to take what you can get. Luckily there is always something exciting on the menu.

Remember when Nova Express closed? That wasn't a good sign for Fairfax Village, especially after news came that neighbor Largo was also leaving the street. Luckily, it seems a great new restaurant/bar will take over--The Golden State is looking like it will open soon. It has "a locally sourced, simple menu designed by Samir Mohajer (formerly of Rustic Canyon)," writes Blackburn and Sweetzer. "Think five (homemade) sausage options, five sandwiches, a killer burger, six beers on tap, six wines, Scoops gelato and sodas, including tasty local root beer from Virgil’s." Now some of the city's best gelato can be found more westward.

The area where Venutra Blvd. meets Woodman Ave in Sherman Oaks is known as one of Los Angeles' great restaurant rows.

         

Al Gelato sits on Robertson in the southern part of Bevely Hills. It came recommended from a couple of friends, but I initially had doubts because it was billed more as a dessert place, but hey, if they have cake and pizza and gelato all in one place, who am I to complain?
