There are no specific rituals you'll need to know about to observe Geek Pride Day today, but if you're looking to participate, you may benefit from the inclusion of something with a motherboard and/or a cartoon-ish costume. For those who wear their geek-dom with a more silent pride, pat yourself on the back today for your passionate, smart, diverse, and inventive ways. If you need 5 reasons to be proud to be a geek, Wired has a few suggestions you might want to point out to any doubters.
Geek Pride Day: A Field Guide to Los Angeles Geeks
LA Tech, Party People Flock to SXSW Interactive
By the time dozens of LA-based bands descend on Austin for South by Southwest next week, LA's greatest freaks and geeks will have already mad an impact at SXSWi. The interactive component of SXSW, which begins tomorrow (along with the opening of SXSW Film) is a long weekend packed with panels and conversations regarding the future of new media, technology, and entertainment. Now in its 16th year, SXSWi has grown more notable in recent years for the sheer number of happy hours and parties (at least 85 at last count) that span the 5-day conference with product launches flowing as freely as the beer.

Get your cyber punk, Blade Runner and SciFi geekery from 1982 out of your closet because starship Twiistup 5 is getting ready to touch down at Santa Monica airport next Thursday.
TV Junkie: Tuesday
Late night TV is looking really good this week, with at least one good guest per show per night (with the exception of the deplorable "Last Call With Carson Daly").
LAist Interview: Jonathan Coulton at SXSW
We caught up with Jonathan Coulton after he participated in a live taping of the Heather Gold show, an experience he blogged as well, without noting the more relevant details -- he sang a duet of Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta" with Gold reading the lyrics from an iPhone and then sang Billy Joel's "Don't Ask Me Why" with Harvey Danger's Sean Nelson.
BarCampLA-5 Takes Over AOL's Beverly Hills HQ
The twice-yearly, geek-tastic unconference for technologists, gamers, industry-folk, and Internet lovers of all stripes is again upon us. BarCampLA is in its fifth iteration and thanks to a collaborative effort fronted by Jason Cosper and Crystal Williams (and dozens of sponsors), it's shaping up to be the best BarCamp evar.
Soundcheck: The Airborne Toxic Event, The Deadly Syndrome & Castledoor @ Spaceland, 1/31/08
Three weeks ago, The Airborne Toxic Event (MySpace) concluded their January residency at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake with a show that included The Deadly Syndrome (MySpace) and Castledoor (MySpace). It was a chance to see all three of Kevin Bronson's bands to watch on the same stage in a single night.
Free Music and Free Pretzels in Glendale.
Love Pretzels? Love Indie Rock? Often find yourself torn between these two passions like the protagonist in some kind of terrible 80s R&B song about adultery and not wanting to be right?

LAist Attends Twiistup 3 and Gets Our Geek On!
LAist had the opportunity to attend Twiistup 3 last week in Venice at the Air Conditioned Supper Club and it was a geek fest you didn’t want to miss! Tech startups, their employees and followers were joined by Venture Capital firms, bloggers, news crews and even Perez Hilton to enjoy a night of hands-on demos by 8 pre-selected local startups called “showoffs” for the night all while mixing and mingling amongst each other.
Pencil This In: Tuesday
If you want to do something else tonight besides the mind-numbing seventh season opener of American Idol, here are a few options:
TV Junkie: Tuesday - Rudolph and Victoria's Secret
How can it be Christmas with out Rudolph or hotties in underwear strutting through snowflakes? The previews for this week's Nip/Tuck looked hilarious, I hope it delivers; gonna have to Tivo part three of Tin Man which has been pretty good so far despite certain shortcomings that are particular to the SciFi channel. As always, thanks for your comments. 7:15pm Becket TCM - (1964) Do you remember being forced to watch this in high school...
TV Junkie: Tuesday Night Picks
Am sorry to report the K-Ville is nothing more than another cop show. A shootout an car chase 8 minutes into it? Tough guy Anthony Anderson 's character crying in the first 15 minutes? I don't know how this show could redeem itself, I essentially tuned out after the first 20 minutes. I'll tell you what though, Saving Grace somewhat redeemed itself what with Holly Hunter's bare butt being the focal point of the...
Halfway there...
In order to appease the overwhelming influx of dissatisfied early adopter iPhone customers, Steve Jobs has issued an open letter addressing the $200 qualm. Although the logistics seem to be in the works, Jobs has decided to offer $100 of store credit to those who bought the iPhone through either AT&T or Apple without a rebate or any other consideration whatsoever: Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from...
Tech News Roundup - Apple Just Says 'No' to DRM, Vonage is Screwed and Google Knows the 411
• Apple makes a deal with Music giant EMI to offer music at the iTunes Store with no DRM. If you don't know what DRM means, don't worry. It may not be around much longer. • Like Apple, Microsoft is apparently going to be making a deal with EMI for no DRM music too. Microsoft copying Apple? I'm shocked. • The saga continues for VOIP provider Vonage. First, they lose to Verizon. Then, they...
BarCamp is in Session
The third iteration of BarCamp LA is in full effect with a record number of attendee/participants. BarCamp is an ad-hoc un-conference produced, attended and presented by enterprising media/tech/Internet junkies, worker-monkeys, and inquiring civilians as an alternative to the overly-corporate, overpriced mega-conferences that commonly occur at the Convention Center, Loews Hotel, or somewhere-in-the-Bay Area. Still don't get it? Just come on down, BarCamp is free (thanks to sponsors) and its fun. Day one is winding down...
American Idol: The Guys Step It Up (Except Sanjaya)
The remaining 10 guys performed on American Idol last night, and thankfully, it wasn't two hours of excruciating torture like last week. First, it was only a 90-minute show to make room for Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader. (Hence, the shameless Jeff Foxworthy shots in the AI audience. He hosts the show, so you know it's gonna be redneck good.) And while the guys greatly improved from their first outing, they still...
TV Junkie: 'Jericho' Returns; Jaime on Leno; Shark Attack Guy Finally Makes it on Letterman
A Word Or 30: Who else is waiting to hear the announcement of the Anna Nicole Smith Story film deal? Jaime Pressly presents us tonight, with the first reason to watch Leno in years. TV Junkie: 'Idol' Semifinalists Revealed; 'Lost' Goes Back to the Old Island; Armstrong on Colbert
A Word or 48: House was pretty good last night and the timing was great what with the blizzard hitting New England today. With the semifinalists declared on Idol and Paula Abdul declaring that she's never been drunk in her life, I get the feeling that show is really coming along now. Today - Wednesday - February 14th, 2007 Breakfast at Tiffany's (TCM, 4:05 p.m.) Holly Golightly, not the band Beauty and the Geek...
TV Junkie: 'Lost' is Back - 'nuff said
A Word or 24: The now much-maligned Lost is back. OK so this is a bad show compared to what else on (basic cable) TV right now? Tonight - Wednesday - February 7th, 2007 Sharks @ Ducks (Fox Sports, 7:00 p.m.) College Basketball: USC @ UCLA (PRIME, 7:30 p.m) Friday Night Lights (NBC, 8:00 p.m.) Racial tension brews in the Panthers locker room, or is it the Jaguars? Some kind of animal. Criminal Minds/CSI:...
TV Junkie: Joe "Pull My Finger" Biden on 'Daily Show'; 'Bones' is Back; Paul Weller on Conan

Lakers @ Celtics (KCAL, 5:30 p.m.) Monster (IFC, 6:00 p.m.) Charlize Theron transorms herself in an Oscar winning performance. Worth watching just...
TV Junkie: "Idol"; Charlie Rose gets O'Tooled; "Naked Trucker" Premieres
A Word or 33: Is anyone watching "Idol"? I can't believe it's back, I just haven't accepted it. Maybe when Diana Ross comes on as a consultant, perhaps after she sues "Dreamgirls," then I might consider it. Today - Wednesday - January 17th, 2007 Lakers @ Spurs (KCAL, 6:00 p.m.) "Foreign Correspondent" (TCM, 7:00 p.m.) A '40s classic from Hitchcock. "American Idol" (Fox, 8:00 p.m.) Season premiere part deux. "Armed & Famous" (CBS, 8:00...
TV Junkie: Bush Disruption; Wee Man with a Glock; O'Toole on Letterman
A Word or 23: Our President attempts to communicate using the English language tonight, thus causing a ripple effect of TV scheduling problems extending well into primetime. Tonight - Wednesday - January 10th, 2007 Lakers @ Rockets (KCAL, 5:30 p.m.) "Presidential Address" (PBS, CBS, ABC, FOX, etc. 6:00 p.m.) This'll be good, get ready for it. "Armed and Famous" (CBS, 8:00 p.m.) Series Premiere. Wee Man, Eric Estrada, Jack Osbourne, and LaToya Jackson are...
TV Junkie: Series Premieres: "WIRED" on TV; 'Knights of Prosperity'; 'In Case of Emergency'
One Minute Review: So Courteney Cox Arquette's new venture, 'Dirt', was, as Borat would say, "Dirt from anus". Also, did anyone catch Letterman last night? The first half of the show was devoted to jokes about Saddam's execution, including the Top Ten. I don't think it went over that well, except for maybe at the White House. Tonight - Wednesday - January 3rd, 2007 Blue Jackets @ Kings (Fox Sports, 7:30 p.m.) "Friday Night...

Around the World with the -ists
that we want to kill anyone and everyone that makes a "something on a something" joke. But then we realized that there was no way we could ever win this fight, and, hell, if you can't beat them, we might as well join them. And with that, you have the theme of this weeks' Gothamist network post.
