More Changes at KCRW, as Trinidad Moves to Weekdays

Garth Trinidad’s Top Ten Albums of 2007
Since his early twenties, Garth Trinidad has been DJing Chocolate City on KCRW for over 10 years now. He sits on the Grammy Awards R&B board in support of the new ‘best urban alternative performance’ category, created as a direct result of his continued approach to music programming. He is a much sought after music commenter, supervisor and expert in his field. To catch his show, tune in Saturday nights on KCRW from 6:00-9:00...
We Don't Want It Unless It's Brand New (Heavies)
For this Laist contributor, the love for The Brand New Heavies began with a little Heavy Rhyme Experience. Before LL Cool J went unplugged and before The Roots became the only contemporary Black (hip-hop, r&b, pop or rock) band with national acclaim and radio airplay in America, there was this eclectic group of British cats getting supremely funky underneath my favorite rap group in high school, The Pharcyde. From "Soul Flower" 14 years ago to last night at The Roxy, we've all been through a lot.
A Decade of Chocolate
Mayor Ray Nagin and his n'awlins constituents might not know this but LA has had it's own Chocolate City for the past 10 years. Garth Trinidad has been the wizard of sound for KCRW's Chocolate City program since 1996 and has been the key figure in launching important "urban alternative" acts for that time. It is safe to say that without Chocolate City, artists like Jill Scott and Goapele and labels like Ubiquity would have had a much harder time finding success in the the contemporary music market.
