But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch the final night of local indie rock outfit Saint Motel's (LAist Interview) month-long residency. And, lastly, local psych rockers Xu Xu Fang will be performing at the Silver Lake Lounge. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch the penultimate night of LA-based experimental psych duo Gangi (LAist Review). Local indie rockers LANDy, which, oddly enough, features actor Adam Goldberg, are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: Juliette Commagere, Gangi, Golden Animals, The Antarcticans

Brooklyn-based retro 70s psych rockers Golden Animals are poised to headline the Silver Lake Lounge with NY-based alt-folk outfit Arizona in tow. And, lastly, local experimental rock act the Antarcticans will be annihilating eardrums at the Smell. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch LA-based experimental psych folk duo Gangi (LAist Review), who will be resuming their month-long residency as well. LAist favorite Crooked Cowboy is slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: Nortec Collective, Gangi, Free Blood, Nico Stai

Tonight Tijuana-based electronic ensemble Nortec Collective will be performing their Grammy-nominated Bostich + Fussible material at the Echoplex. LAist favorites Gangi (LAist Review) are slated to headline an eclectic bill of talented locals, including electronic mastermind Daedelus and the Gaslamp Killer, at Spaceland. And, speaking of Spaceland, Pershing Square and its ice rink will be taken over by local indie rockers wait.think.fast. for Spaceland on Ice. The Watkins Family are poised to put on their unforgettable Family Hour at Largo at the Coronet. And, lastly, LA buzz band Nico Stai will be rocking out at 3 Clubs. But we strongly recommend showing up at La Cita to catch one of Brooklyn's finest electro acts, Free Blood. You'll surely regret missing their lively performance if you don't make it out!

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.

Tonight Rockford-based rockers Cheap Trick will kick off a two-night stint at the House of Blues Sunset. Local fringe rock outfit the Movies (LAist Review, #2) are slated to continue their Monday Night Residency at Spaceland. And, lastly, Mike Stinson is headlining a country-centric bill at the Echoplex. But we recommend stopping by the Echo to catch the Manimal Vinyl Residency. Local experimental folk rockers Gangi (LAist Review) will be fusing beats, sound bites and a distinctive nasal tenor. Besides, you're probably all Movies-ed out by now—if that's even possible.

Tonight Chicago-based alternative rockers the Smashing Pumpkins will be concluding a two-night stint at the Gibson Amphiteatre. LA locals the Afternoons (LAist Review, #2) are slated to headline Spaceland. Quirky folk rock outfit Eagle Winged Palace have a record release show at the Silver Lake Lounge. But we recommend heading over to the Henry Fonda Music Box to catch French electro-pop sensation Sébastien Tellier.

Tonight Brooklyn-based buzz band Yeasayer will be headlining the Troubadour. Last year they were rocking out to twenty some-odd people at the CMJ Festival in New York. And a mere ten months later they were performing for thousands at this year's Lollapalooza. Talk about mobility! Anyways, Rhett Miller will be returning to the Largo at the Coronet with Murry Hammond of the Old 97s. And local singer-songwriter extraordinaire Charlie Wadhams will be continuing his residency at Tangier. But, in all honesty, we're really excited for the Cure Tribute Night at the Echo. LA-by-way-of-Brooklyn psych duo Gangi (LAist Review) are slated to perform with Hecuba. It'll be a strange night of electronic-infused fringe music, but it is not to be missed.

Tonight LA will be seized by festivals. Now in its third year, the LA Weekly's Detour Festival will be taking over the area around City Hall in Downtown. We're excited for Aussie electro-pop sensation Cut Copy, epic LA-based prog-rockers the Mars Volta, English folk rockers Noah and the Whale and DFA Records's latest and greatest, Hercules and Love Affair. The lineup is enticing, but certainly not for everyone. We had a rather traumatic experience last year involving Justice and drunken buffoons. It did not go over well. The 10th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival, which takes place on Colorado Blvd. between Eagle Rock Blvd. and Argus St., boasts some 74 acts on 16 stages—the most comprehensive bill of local bands we've ever seen. We're excited for Abe Vigoda, Mika Miko (LAist Review), the Antarcticans, Gangi (LAist Review), and the Ship Collective's mainstay Earlimart. Need we mention that it's still free? And although it will be our festival pick of the night, we'd like to suggest a show for those who aren't interested in crowds. Head on over to Spaceland to catch Brooklyn-based folk songstress Rio en Medio. Tonight will serve as the record release party for her second full-length, Frontier. It will be the start of what promises to be a very successful career.

Welcome to Matt Gangi's extremely stylized yet vaguely recognizable world. Gangi's debut, A, acquires strength from not only the exemplary songwriting, but the vast array of musical personalities that the band displays. In a span of minutes, they could turn from Neil Young to Jethro Tull. And to that end, Gangi certainly shows signs of musical schizophrenia—juxtaposing various elements that shouldn't mesh, and yet somehow they do.
