Galaxy Going for First

Four months ago, had one dared to state that the Galaxy would today be within striking distance of first place of the overall standings, one would have received more than a fair share of odd looks. The same type one would get if one were to claim that hiring Ruud Gullit as Head Coach was the best move the Galaxy have made in the last 5 years.

World Cup Wrap Up, Kids Day Out

The U.S. Men's National Team took a big step towards booking a ticket to next year's World Cup in South Africa after a tough win over Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain. The soca warriors took the game to the Yanks for long stretches during the first half last night as the Yanks looked disorganized and struggled to generate any offense.

Cavalry Arrives for Rebaño Gringo

A little over a month ago, Chivas USA traded forward Atiba Harris to FC Dallas for midfielder/defender Marcelo Saragosa in a move that left many speculating what plans the red-and-whites might have in mind as they prepared for their playoff run. Some fans and analysts speculated that the team was making room for a big name signing, while others were puzzled at the move, given the team had been struggling on the offensive side. Lingering questions were answered over the last few days and the rest of MLS better take notice.

Quiet Weekend at Home Depot Center

For the first time in months, the main soccer field at the Home Depot Center will not see any action this weekend. A bit of a rarity and attributed to the fact that all three of L.A.'s professional soccer teams have taken their respective shows on the road.

Galaxy, Chivas USA Victorious

Galaxy forward Landon Donovan converted a penalty kick in the first half to give the blue-and-gold a 1 - 0 advantage over the visiting New York Red Bulls at the Home Depot Center on a night on which Galaxy midfielder Chris Klein celebrated his 300th career game.

This weekend may go down as the first annual Southern California Soccer Weekend due to the breadth of options available to fans. Quite an impressive feat in many ways, especially considering the status of the sport in the U.S. a mere 15 years ago when MLS didn't even exist.

SuperClásico Ends in Stalemate

Chivas USA and the Galaxy battled to a tie in a physical game last night as the first installment of the Honda SuperClásico series played out at the Home Depot Center.

Five years ago, Chivas USA began MLS play and the L.A. derby versus the Galaxy -- known as the Honda SuperClásico -- was born.

For a second time in less than a month, the Colorado Rapids will once again occupy the visitors locker rooms at the Home Depot Center. However, unlike two weeks ago when the Rapids visited L.A. to battle Chivas USA in their season opener, tonight they confront the Galaxy.

Soccer is sometimes characterized as a cruel sport, not because it is a violent sport, but instead, its cruelty in its administration of justice on the field. It is perhaps the most democratic of team sports, where on any given day, the highest ranked team in the World could lose to the lowest ranked one, and conversely, the most dominant team on the field doesn't always win. It is highly unforgiving of mistakes, perhaps more so than any other team sport. In many ways, it is this unknown that excites spectators, causing great excitement when the forces of the soccer world behave as they should as much as when they don't, especially in championship games.

The L.A. Times ran a story this morning discussing the recently announced loaning of David Beckham to Italian soccer powerhouse AC Milan. This action has once again re-ignited discussion that Beckham may be going back to Europe, as some speculated might happen earlier this year when he trained with Arsenal in England. Unlike the Arsenal situation, this story has a bit more substance to it.

Angels defeat Twins 9-1. Catcher Mike Napoli and first baseman Casey Kotchman had solo homers to demolish the Twins. Jon Garland pitched eight innings for the Angels giving up six hits and one earned run in the fifth on 95 pitches. 95 pitches! For today the Angels pitching gives a sigh of relief.

The Los Angeles Galaxy wrapped a 3-0 win in Shanghai on Wednesday night (yup -- big time difference, folks!) thanks to a hat trick by Carlos Ruiz. Shanghaiist, our sister site, has been covering Beckhamania and has great analysis of the match against Shanghai East Asia Hong Kong United (it's unclear at this time if that fits on a jersey). In fact, they've got a lot more insight than, say, ESPN's Soccernet.

Clippers 103, Knicks 94 - Los Angeles won on the road for the first time in nine games, beating up on one of the only NBA teams that may be worse than the Clips. Two key players, Correy Maggette (19 points) and Chris Kaman (15 points), returned for the first time in several games. Coach Mike Dunleavy, however, was sick and stayed in the team hotel. He did have enough energy to issue an apology for bashing the Knicks in a statement earlier in the week.
