A billboard in Rancho Cucamonga asking viewers to "imagine no religion" was taken down this week after residents and the city complained about its message. The Freedom From Religion Foundation advertisement was first installed last week causing local conversation and complaints. The pressure quickly built up and the General Outdoor sign company took it down. The foundation's co-president Annie Laurie Gaylor was not so happy, as expressed in a statement they sent out: "Are......

File this under: Biting the hand that feeds you. His royal purpleness, Prince and his record label, have made the rather genius move of threatening to sue his own fans for the use of pictures of Prince, his lyrics and "anything linked to Prince's likeness." (That included fans' photographs of Prince-inspired tattoos and license plates.) Now we can understand if an artist is a bit miffed at sites for pirating and stealing music for......

This week ended with the launch of the seventh and final Harry Potter installation. But while the world was consumed with Pottermania, it's important to remember that there were more serious things going on in the world, too - two of them in -Ist cities. Sampaist was shocked when a passenger jet crashed into the center of Sao Paulo, killing at least 200 people. The airplane, an Airbus A320, skidded off the runway at the......

As Bill Moyers and his guests, constitutional law expert Bruce Fein and political journalist John Nichols, made abundantly clear in their discussion on PBS' Journal (catch the whole episode here), the question that ought to be asked isn't, "should we be discussing impeachment?" but, "why haven't we seriously started discussing impeachment yet?" Even though a recent public opinion poll from the American Research Group revealed that 45% of Americans favored impeachment hearings for Bush......

Billy Corgan got the band back together, sorta, and the Smashing Pumpkins are really going to have a new record this summer. James Iha probably won't be on it, and our girlfriend D'arcy or our other girlfriend Melissa Auf der Maur will probably also be replaced, but Billy and Jimmy Chamberlin didn't do us wrong on Zwan, and that rhymes with bring it on. LA street art pioneer and Obey founder Shepard Fairey's official......

Dear Carlos, You always like to state in your show that you are "not a racist" because you "make fun of everybody". You spend most of your energy making highly derogatory comments about Mexicans, Muslims and Asians, then sprinkle it with modest cracks directed at the white population. Even if you did truly direct your hatred equally, your jokes would still be overtly racist -- and its not because you routinely target minorities using......

Don Imus is an old man. Maybe back in the day he was funny, but he hasn't been funny for as long as I've been aware of him. But he does live in America, and here we have the freedom of speech. Now that Right doesn't mean that people cant call you out on what you say, but it should mean that you shouldn't have to get fired or jailed or killed for saying......

Today we got an email from a concerned Pepperdine alumn whose words made us think that there just might be trouble in paradise Dear Editor: As an alumnus of Pepperdine University, I am deeply troubled by recent events at the University and the active suppression of free speech on campus. Pepperdine, like all American colleges, should be an “open marketplace for ideas” rather than an agent for indoctrination. Unfortunately, the University continues to practice......

A pair of LaRouche supporters ventured outside their natural habitat (arguing on the sidewalk with College Republicans) to spread their gospel at the Waterside Shopping Center in Marina Del Rey on Friday. According to the activists, mall staff called local police to have them removed from "private property." Authorities came, ran a quick check for wants and warrants, and determined that the protest was protected by law. One explained that, "This is free speech.......

When you think of going green, you usually think of hybrids, recycling, freedom of speech, and other tree-hugging hippie activities. But no worries, we’re not going to change that! Former US Secretary of Education William Bennett is in the media hot seat right now. The conservative talk show host made the following statement during a Wednesday broadcast of Morning in America: "[Y]ou could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down." (listen to the clip) Yesterday White House spokesman Scott McClellan made an official statement on the matter. McClellan said that the President "believes the comments were......
