"Brothers and Sisters I have a story for you," announced a skinny man in a white collared shirt. He then relayed to us a tale of a magic man on Hollywood Blvd. who gave him magic coins that got him so high he saw Jesus. He then denounced Jesus and said that the next band would be even better than the son of God, which is a pretty tough introduction to live up to. I'm sure that had electric guitars been around when Jesus walked the earth, he would have been freakishly good at it.

Tonight Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand will be headlining the Hollywood Palladium. Brooklyn-based indie pop duo Matt & Kim will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the El Rey Theatre with none other than Philadelphia's own rapper/singer Amanda Blank. And, lastly, Omaha-bred Americana act Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band will be taking on the Echoplex with Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Kurt Vile and Swedish psych rockers Dungen. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch San Diegan garage rockers Crocodiles. London-based trios Graffiti Island and Pens are slated to kick things off.
Tonight Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand are poised to perform with Green Day at the Forum. Nashville-based alternative rock super-group the Dead Weather are poised to take LA by storm, playing at the Wiltern with none other than Tyvek. And, lastly, local indie rockers Army Navy (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be performing at the Troubadour with the Shys and Eastern Conference Champions. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland (surprise!) to catch Highland Park-bred rock outfit Mellowdrone. LAist favorites White Arrows are slated to kick things off.
This week Nashville-based alternative rock super-group the Dead Weather will be taking LA by storm, playing both the Wiltern and the Mayan Theatre with none other than Tyvek. Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand are poised to perform with Green Day at the Forum and then by themselves at the Hollywood Palladium. Legendary Brazilian psychedelic rock act Os Mutantes will be performing at the Echoplex. And, lastly, NY-based experimental folk rock outfit Akron/Family will be taking on the El Rey Theatre with Howlin' Rain and Lucky Dragons.

Glasgow's own indie rockers Franz Ferdinand are slated to perform at Amoeba Records early on in the evening. LA-based singer-songwriter Eleni Mandell will be gracing the stage at the Hotel Café with the equally buzzworthy "one-woman band" Theresa Andersson (LAist Interview, Review). And, lastly, English rapper Lady Sovereign is set to flow at the Echo. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Largo at the Coronet to catch producer/musician extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Review).
Anyone else watch programming on ABC.com? Get ready for more commercials on that web property as their research has shown that they can pump a lot more commercials at viewers than they thought they could. You gotta love the attitude of one of the members of the National Association of Television Program Executives, a panel that is supportive of the research findings: "The key is what is that very fine line and balance before we push them (the audience) over the edge of being pissed."
Tonight Chicago-based pop punk outfit Alkaline Trio will be coming through the Keyclub in Hollywood. The Hotel Café is hosting the final night of its "ho-ho-tel 2008" holiday extravaganza with singer-songwriter types like Brother Sal (LAist Review). The Eagle Rock Bowling & Drinking Club will be throwing a Holiday Party at All Star Lanes with a handful of great local acts, including Wait.Think.Fast. In a strained effort to make up for last night's botched bill, KROQ has booked an indie-centric line-up that would sate your average music lover. Night two of Almost Acoustic Christmas will be headlined by the Cure, Death Cab For Cutie (LAist Review), Franz Ferdinand and Vampire Weekend (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4). And, lastly, Lawrence-based experimental rockers Baby Birds Don't Drink Milk will be performing at Echo Curio. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echoplex for the Midnight Mission Benefit. Earlimart front man Aaron Espinoza will be joined by Rilo Kiley's Pierre De Reeder (LAist Review) for a great cause.
Artist: Five O'Clock Heroes Album: Bend To the Breaks Label: Glaze Records Release Date: September 18th, 2007 I can't tell you how much I needed to get this record. I've been listening to and reviewing a seemingly endless series of shoegazey-type boys without a testicle between them. The Five O'Clock Heroes produce good old rock and roll with every bass note, guitar chord, and drum thump as real as real can get. Some mention the...
Straight from my iPod: 1. Justin Timberlake - SexyBack The pinnacle of guilty pleasure straight from MTV's Total Request Live fame. Still a great club banger. 2. The Fray - Look After You All of their songs sound the same but this one hasn't lost its replayability. 3. The Dixie Chicks - The Long Way Around There is nothing to feel guilty about listening to the Dixie Chicks. They kick ass. The only reason...
Mon 6/12 - Boy Kill Boy / Monsters are Waiting @ Spaceland (Free) – Spaceland's always a safe bet on Monday night. London’s Boy Kill Boy play that catchy dance-rock that you might like if you’re into Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand. They’ve been on tour with Charlatans and Echo & the Bunnymen, so take advantage of seeing them for free. They’re also playing Lollapalooza and the Reading and Leeds festivals. Their first single, “Suzie” has gotten some local radio airplay. Local band, Monsters are Waiting is doing the free Monday night residency throughout June. Into older school British rock? catch Echo & the Bunnymen at the Fonda.
The weeks starts out right when a sucker punch on the field lands Chicagoist in the middle of a Sox/Cubs throwdown and the fists continue to fly in the comments. Despite suburban resident Ms. Pinney's best little try no books will be banned anytime soon and the El is really really gross.
Is anybody driving three hours to the desert for this? Two day passes ($167 + $23 in fees) and Saturday tickets ($86 + $15 in fees) are still available. Most of the rock bands have played LA clubs in the past few months. Otherwise you better really like DJs and house music……
Coachella, the 100-plus-degree Woodstock of the West has announced its 2006 lineup. As rumors had predicted, Depeche Mode will perform in the unofficial "I love the 80s" slot. We're surprised that rumors of Smashing Pumpkins and My Bloody Valentine reuniting haven't proved true. Maybe concert organizers are holding back a few "surprise guests" to goose ticket sales down the line.
FRIDAY
A crisp, October evening didn't stop fans
from attending Saturday's
Franz Ferdinand concert.
However, the dipping mercury did bolster sales of jackets and blankets
at the venue. The
Greek is notoriously
cool at night, and it was doubly so last night. Thankfully electronica, gospel
and punk-infused rock helped keep everyone alive and kicking.
