Abstain From Romaine: Listeria Found in Lettuce Leaves, Too
The hysteria over listeria continues, and now there's a new culprit: shredded romaine lettuce.
California's True Leaf Farms is voluntarily recalling 2,498 cartons of shredded romaine that may have been contaminated with listeria, according to the FDA. That's the same contaminant that has been linked to the deaths of 15 people who ate cantaloupes from Colorado tainted with the organism.
Killer Cantaloupes: 8 Deaths Attributed to Contaminated Melons
An outbreak of illness caused by listeria found in one Colorado company's cantaloupe has now killed eight people, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). So far, no deaths have occurred in California, though as of yesterday's CDC update, one person has been sickened in our state.

Patina to Make Local High Schoolers Apprentice Chefs
Chef Joachim Splichal of Patina has been the mentor for many chefs in Los Angeles, and is poised to expand his influence through a new partnership with the culinary program at the LAUSD's Santee Education Complex, a local high school, and South LA's A Place Called Home, a youth social service center. Patina will select apprentices for the program, which is due to begin next month, says the Daily Dish.
Move Over BBQ: In-N-Out Expands To Texas
At least eight In-N-Out restaurants are planning to open in Texas with the first locations set to open in as soon as two months, reports the OC Register. When In-N-Out announced it was conquering Utah three years ago, the regional chain reportedly said it had no additional plans for US domination. Does this mean we can expect an In-N-Out in Philadelphia?? For now, the answer is no. However, the Lone Star state is about to get less lonely.
Bastide Announces New Executive Chef
Notorious for its revolving door of megawatt kitchen talent, West Hollywood's Bastide announced yesterday that their new Executive Chef is Sydney Hunter III, who has been at the French restaurant since January.
Hunter's local trajectory is storied: he began at L'Orangerie in 2002, was a sous chef at Bastide until 2008, then took charge at Fraiche in Santa Monica, and has been seen of late popping up in the kitchen in support of Chef Ludo Lefebvre at LudoBites.
Water Grill Names Top Chef-testant Baumgarten Executive Chef
Following the recent departure of Chef David LeFevre, Downtown's perennial dining favorite the Water Grill has named Amanda Baumgarten the restaurant's new Executive Chef. Baumgarten, already in the kitchen as the seafood restaurant's sous chef, gained attention as one of the Chef-testants on the 7th season of the Bravo series Top Chef. She emerged victorious in her bid for the job at the Water Grill from a batch of national contenders. Her previous gigs include being the Executive Sous Chef at Ford's Filling Station.
