Mark Your Calendars for The Great Chefs of LA Nov 8th

OK, so we are always posting photo essays of amazing food events like last weekend's LA Magazine's Food Event or last year's Great Chefs of Los Angeles And you are probably thinking to yourself, "Self, one of these days we are going to go to one of these amazing events. We deserve to drink champagne and eat adorable and delicious little bites too."

Last weekend we were happy to take part in the Harvest Festival, as part of a year-long 90th Anniversary celebration for the historic San Antonio Winery, a place much loved by LAist. The gracious Riboli family hosted the event, which was held at the winery, which has been in its same location on Lamar Street in East Los Angeles since 1917. There was food provided by the winery's onsite Maddalena restaurant, and wine aplenty...

We were delighted to find out that one of our favorite folks who talks about food was named this weekend as the recipient of the LA Press Club Award for Best Individual Blog. Congrats to Pat Saperstein and Eating LA! According to Saperstein, the judges summed up her site as follows: Writer does a great job of merging personality and topic, producing an engaging voice. Well-informed without coming across as elitist. Great showcasing of...

The week began on 9/11 and we remembered Howard Stern's 2001 broadcast of that day. There were many choices of visual stimuli. Among those were Loose Change, Dateline in Long Beach, Path to 9/11 or Football. While we watched Castaic burn, we felt the need to be a little more green and looked into Griffith Park planning, e-waste, coastal cleaning and Eastside reservoirs. Speaking of e-waste, one of our writers got his computer stolen...

This LAist admits to not talking food much around these parts for some time now. Obviously we haven't been starving ourselves; there's been plenty of eating out and cooking in at home to sustain us in our shameful absence. We might even so boldly suggest that while we were keeping quiet we were also busying ourselves with learning more and more about food so we could pass on this wisdom to our readers. We've devoured the written words of famed critics like Ruth Reichl, Gael Greene, and Mimi Sheraton, and are now nose deep in Anthony Bourdain's famous b.s., and loving every minute of it. We've also just started a series of professional cooking classes at Culver City's New School of Cooking, and boy howdy can we julienne a raw potato! So that's what we're up to. But we're back... so get ready to eat our words...again.

It's been a while since LAist shared the dish on local food events, so we're doing our best to recoup and serve up a tasty mouthful of food tidbits today.

It seems as though foodies all over LA knew they were going to be outdone on Thanksgiving, which is why there is a noticeable lack of post-worthy food events happening in our fair city for the next few days. We suspect that after a day of loaded plates heaping with turkey prepared in a variety of fashions (we've heard talk of the infamous Deep Fried turkey, the old standby Roasted, and our own was done upright on a Spanek Roaster in a kettle grill) as well as plentiful servings of tasty side dishes (we break every healthy eating rule with a spoonful of those darn yams flavored with bourbon and topped with toasted marshmallows) and, let's not forget, pumpkin pie, well, even the most die-hard eater has to loosen their belt and take a break. It's extremely importatnt to rest up before braving those shopping crowds, too, right? In any event, we have no food-related events to share with you this fine November weekend, so we're challenging you--should you chose to accept--to create a food adventure of your own. The easiest would be to try a new place, or, for the slightly more daring, try a new kind of cuisine. Perhaps you'll want to do your adventuring on home territory, so why not do a dry run test drive of a new recipe--maybe something you were thinking about making for the next big eating holiday (which, as of today, is a mere 30 days away). Or indulge in a great bottle of wine and either head out to a restaurant with an accomodating corkage fee, or cook up your favorite meal at home. What are we doing, you ask? (You did ask, didn't you?) Well, we're taking two bites out of our personal sushi safari, and we're also gearing up to make some killer cookies to share with some friends. We're also wholly committed to researching holiday cocktails (we're a hands-on sort in this department). Naturally, we'll keep you posted. Meanwhile, eat, drink, nap, or shop at your own leisure this weekend. Fill you own bowl, we say! And don't be shy about letting us know what you've discovered.
