When the Manila Machine food truck, with its tasty Filipino fare, got rolling last summer, it soon became a favorite meals-on-wheels option in the city. From their addictive and unique purple ube cupcakes to their savory and satisfying lumpia, sliders, and adobo dishes, local food bloggers turned entrepreneurs Marvin Gapultos (Burnt Lumpia) and Nastassia Johnson (Let Me Eat Cake) got thousands of eaters tuned into to a taste of the Philippines.
Truck Stop: The Manila Machine Goes Off the Road, But Not Away
New Cookbook Includes Recipes from SoCal Food Bloggers
A new cookbook aims to turn crowd-sourced material into crowd-pleasing plates, and among those whose eats are included are ten Southern California-based food bloggers.
Though collecting a community's recipes to compile in a publication is how many beloved cookbooks have come to be, The Best of Food Blogs Cookbook hails itself as the first to source the recipes from social media.
The Manila Machine: Pinoy Delights Take to the Streets of L.A.
When it comes to the oft-debated realm of the new wave of food trucks taking to the streets of Los Angeles, the topic tends to move towards what's missing. Finding a niche is key for food trucks who hope to join the ranks of the successful food-making four-wheeled Twitterati who draw lines and accolades. What has been missing for sometime was Filipino food, which is what nourishes a segment of our local population but also represents food that is perfect for a truck, since that means exposure to those who are curious about the cuisine.
Local Blogger Running Bid and Eat Fundraiser for Haiti
LA food blogger Gourmet Pigs is running a second installation of an online bidding-style fundraiser to bring in donations to support two groups helping with relief in Haiti. Bid and Eat is pretty straightforward concept: Several local eateries have donated offers and certificates for folks to bid on, and the proceeds will go to CHF International and Operation USA. The first Bid and Eat raised $765, so the goal for number two is $1000. Participating restaurants include Pasadena's historic The Raymond, as well as Pal Cabron, Elements Kitchen, Jian BBQ and more. Bidding ends tomorrow, March 2nd, at midnight, so head over now so you can bid, eat, and help the relief efforts in Haiti.
All Hail the Tomato: Dowtown Dining to Fete a Favorite Fruit
Yes, I said fruit. Let's get that out of the way immediately, shall we? The tomato--versatile, plentiful, flavorful, and local--is a fruit. It's also something that is in season right now (although you can conceivably make a go of growing your own right now and celebrating a little later on). The Patina Group of restaurants is celebrating this stellar ingredient with Tomato Festival menus at nine of their eateries, and to show off the spoils of the season they brought together a crew of food bloggers and Paul and Maryann Carpenter (the couple who operate Coastal Organics, the 17-acre Santa Paula farm from which the Patina Group sources produce) for a caravan tour of three Downtown eateries, with one course per stop, each showing off the tasty tomato.
Food Woolf Hits the Lucques Annual BBQ Rib Roundup
Local food blogger Food Woolf went in for the attack (in the nicest, saucy rib-devouring way possible) at the 8th annual Lucques BBQ aka the Rib Roundup which was held Sunday August 10th. By the end of the meal there wasn't much left except for some bared bones, empty plates, stained table linens, and these delicious photos that she shared with us via the LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr. It'll be another year until Lucques serves up their BBQ grub, but we thought we'd tease your tastebuds anyhow.
