Last year I traveled to Washington DC for the People's Garden Summit. Nothing odd in that: school bureaucrat on a trip to the nation's capitol to meet with federal bureaucrat and talk about "bureaucrat things." I was going on behalf of my school groups and the National Gardening Association, a great group that gets kids all across the country outside and in the garden. Great right? But what makes this unusual is that the second leg of my flight from Philly to DC - canceled.

City Adopts a Groundbreaking New Surplus Food Policy
This week the LA City Council voted unanimously to approve a new policy for all City departments and elected offices for donating surplus food, and proponents of the policy believe it could be a model program for the rest of the country. The vote followed the presentation of a final report on the policy, which has enjoyed widespread support as it moved towards implementation.
Photos: Canned Food Art Exhibit Will Soon Feed the Needy
It's art mixed with tasty do gooding. The 5th Annual Canstruction is now on display, showing off the work of seven teams of architects, designers, builders, and engineers who took canned food to build structures meant for feeding instead of housing. After November 6th when the exhibit ends, the 10,000 or so cans will go to the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank.
It's Your Civic Duty: Make the Bacon-Wrapped Hot Dog the Official Hot Dog of Los Angeles
Picture Uncle Sam wagging his finger at you. Now, imagine instead his hand outstretched, bearing a fresh-off-the-grill bacon-wrapped hot dog. He's handing it to you, and, well, if you're carnivorous, you're finding it hard to resist. You want to eat it. It's a matter of civic pride. After all, you're an Angeleno!
With 1 in 10 Angelenos in Need of Food, City Council to Consider Food Surplus Policy Today
More than many other major cities, Los Angeles has year-round access to locally grown food, but it doesn't mean hunger is a problem. And in a city known for its large events and parties, a plethora of catering companies are out there serving food, yet are also throwing it away when all is said and done. One of those institutions at the receiving end is the city of Los Angeles, where leftover food at city functions might get wasted.
Canstruction comes to LA
Yeah, we see that the LA Times already provided us with plenty of food- and container-based puns regarding this event, but for some idiotic reason we can't resist telling you to get off your can and check out what's happening at the Westfield Fashion Square this weekend. Phew. Glad that's out of our system.
Beverly Hills Wine Tasting To Fight Hunger (?)
If you happen to be in the area of the Greystone Mansion tonight, looking for something to do and have $75 burning in your pocket, check out the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank’s Wine Tasting and Silent Auction. Great wines are being featured from boutique wineries around California and there will also be (according to the press release) “fine chocolates and gourmet cheeses” too.
On that farm there was an eviction notice
South LA's most well-known community gardeners have been told to get out. The Farm at 41st and Alameda has 360 plots where locals grow fresh produce and hold a market on Sunday that includes, we can see from Kathryn Hill's excellent photographs, grilled corn, fried plantains, taquitos, carnitas, fresh sugar cane and prickly pear.
