Tonight In Rock: The Sounds, Jay Reatard, The Heavy, Flying Lotus

Tonight Swedish rockers the Sounds will be headlining the Wiltern with none other than local dance-infused rock outfit Moving Units (LAist Review) in tow. Memphis-bred garage punk troubadour Jay Reatard is poised to take on the El Rey Theatre (Canceled!). And, lastly, English indie rock act the Heavy (LAist Interview) will be gracing the Echo. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Airliner in Lincoln Heights to catch Flying Lotus, who will be performing in honor of Low End Theory's 3 year anniversary.

Tonight In Rock: Leonard Cohen, Travis, Jon Brion, Monotonix

Tonight Canadian poet, novelist and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen will be taking on a two-date stint at Club Nokia in Downtown. Scottish pop rockers Travis are poised to headline the Wiltern with LAist favorites the Republic Tigers (LAist Interview) in tow. As always, local producer/multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion (LAist Review) will be jamming with friends at Largo at the Coronet. And, lastly, Winnetka-bred experimental beat-maker Flying Lotus will be gracing the Echoplex. But we strongly suggest stopping by Spaceland to check out Israeli shock rock troupe Monotonix (LAist Review).

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.

Tonight, in what will be regarded as every metal aficionado's wet dream, Metallica (LAist Review) and the Sword (LAist Review) are kicking off a two-night stint at the Forum. NY-based bohemian pop rockers the Virgins (LAist Review) will be strutting their stuff at the Troubadour. Brooklyn-based hard rock trio Earl Greyhound are slated to headline the Hotel Café. And, lastly, Marathon Live will be throwing its Second Annual Musical Christmas Extravaganza, which features the Chapin Sisters and Miranda Lee Richards, at 3 of Clubs. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Airliner in Downtown to catch electronic mastermind Flying Lotus. You can expect to dance alongside a blather of chunky, tribal beats from 2008's tour de force Los Angeles.

Tonight Detroit-based R&B legends the Temptations and the Four Tops will be stopping through the Gibson Amphitheatre. LA-based punk rockers the Melvins are slated to headline the Troubadour. And, lastly, local electronic masterminds Flying Lotus and Nosaj Thing will be performing a Black Friday extravaganza at Undefeated/Stussy/Union. As good as that sounds, we strongly suggest heading over to the Hotel Café tonight to catch indie rockers Local Natives, who will be opening up for Voxhaul Broadcast.

Tonight Van the Man will be performing 1968's Astral Weeks in its entirety at the Hollywood Bowl. British power metal band Dragonforce will be tapping out wailing solos at the Wiltern. NY-based rockers Coheed and Cambria will be taking on the second night of a series of shows at the Avalon in which they perform their catalog in its entirety—tonight they will revisit 2003's In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3. Cincinnati-based garage rock band the Heartless Bastards will be playing at Spaceland with local favorites the Broken West. And, lastly, Jon Brion and friends will be gracing the stage at Largo at the Coronet. But we suggest heading over to the Echoplex to get your electro fix. Los Angeles-based experimental producer Daedelus is slated to open for renowned laptop musician Flying Lotus. We're dying to see Mr. Darling get the floor moving with a monome!
