Am I smarter than a 9 1/2-year-old?

Her name is Reason and she is not quite 10 years old. In fact, if you ask her, she'll tell you she is 9-and-a-half, which bodes well for her ability to keep a close tab on important numbers. But that is not why I asked her to fill out my NCAA brackets this year. Each and every year, we are subject to endless debate about who will win, who should win and who who has no chance. This year, I decided to forgo usual strategy that included years of picks based on advice from so-called experts and go with someone whose lack of college basketball wisdom rivals only her fondness for recess. more ›

College Football Madness!!!!!!

College Football Madness!!!!!!

I apologize for the lack of football recaps, but I found it very hard to write about college football this season. With all the upsets it just seemed like not even the college players were all that passionate about playing the game. Look at the following lists and you’ll see what I mean. This season seven #1 and #2 ranked teams have been defeated by unranked opponents. Compare that to last season when the... more ›

The Mountaineers Make Wolverine Mince Meat: College Football Week 1 Review

In one of the last college football games last season, the Boise State Broncos upset the Oklahoma Sooners 43-42 in overtime in the Fiesta Bowl. It was perhaps the biggest upset ever seen in college football at that point. This first week of the college football season gave us the biggest upset almost no one saw. Saturday afternoon two-time defending Division I-AA champions Appalachian State upset #5 Michigan 34-32 in front of 109,000 Wolverine... more ›

Draft Day Hangover in LA

Draft Day Hangover in LA

I'm guessing someone went out to celebrate last night, as a couple local college boys were chosen in the first round of the 2007 NBA Draft. USC's Nick Young was the first to go, at pick number 16 to Washington, where he will toil in obscurity and probably be irrelevant in three years. Just kidding -- he might fit well in the Wizards offense. UCLA's Arron Afflalo was chosen 27th by the Pistons, who could... more ›

LAst Night's Action: LA Strikes Out in First Bowl

Seminoles 44, Bruins 27 - UCLA came into the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco riding a three game winning streak and a giant upset against cross-town rival USC. They looked solid for three more quarters but collapsed in the fourth, giving up 21 points in under five minutes to Florida State. UCLA ends the season with a record of 7-6. Florida State improved to 7-6, giving coach Bobby Bowden 30 consecutive winning seasons. The Pac-10... more ›

Super Saturday

Super Saturday

This is the beauty of having two major conference college football teams in the same town. We get instances where two well-known programs play here on the same day. LAist still remembers 1997 when a highly-ranked Florida State team played at USC the same day that a Peyton Manning-led Tennessee team played at UCLA. Both visiting teams won close games, but over 160,000 people were at a SoCal college football game that day. We should see a similar combined attendance figure again tomorrow. more ›

With Great Talent... Comes Responsibility

With Great Talent... Comes Responsibility

While USC has enough talent to weather pretty much any loss, including Dennis, LAist is still concerned about off-the-field problems with Trojan football. Dennis could be the fifth Trojan arrested since winning the national championship. The most notable among the group was Winston Justice, who Carroll had the temerity to suspend for this season. more ›
