Origami Vinyl Celebrates Its Two-Year Anniversary and Announces Record Store Day Plans

Two years ago today, LAist ran a feature about a little record shop opening in Echo Park. Many people wondered if it would weather the rough economy, but since then it's not just survived--it's thrived. In addition to its choice selection of new and used vinyl, Origami has become one of the smallest LA venues to host some of the biggest names. more ›

LAist @ Sundance 2011: Florence + The Machine At Bing Bar, 01/22/11

Bing Bar banked another standout performance by a 2011 Grammy nominee on Saturday night with female firecracker songstress Florence + The Machine. Hundreds of people waited in the freezing cold to be in the place to be and to catch the red-haired singer in a space no bigger the Echo. Florence Welch's vocals starred and soared backed only by a harp and an acoustic guitar during the 9-song set, which featured a cover of the Cold War Kids' "Hospital Beds," and closed with crowd favorite "Dog Days Are Over." more ›

2010 KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas - Night Two - 12/12/10

             + 21 more

Night Two of the 2010 KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas, could also be dubbed "Hipster Night" as many of the bands featured were or are indie darlings and nearly all have played that big festival in the desert. From the french synth-pop sensations Phoenix to local favorites Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, the spectrum of performance was much more broad than that of the more straightforward rock of Night One. Also featured were Florence + The Machine, Vampire Weekend, Brandon Flowers, Neon Trees, Temper Trap and the Broken Bells. more ›

Florence And The Machine, IO Echo @ Troubadour 10/30/09

             + 1 more

Local gothic dance rockers Io Echo look unfazed as they performed before a sold out crowd at the Troubadour. They were ready for their moment in the spotlight and looked the part. IO Echo vocalist, IO (a.k.a. Joanna Gikas) looked stunning in a white dress with black crosses circling her waist and long flowing hair. Her band manifested themselves in various states of black punk attire which looked terrific through the clouds of white smoke that swirled around the stage. If they had sounded half as good as they looked, we would have been in business. But like a lot of bands, they were mostly packaging and very little substance. more ›

Florence And The Machine Acoustic Set @ Teddy's At The Roosevelt Hotel 10/29/09

Florence And The Machine Acoustic Set @ Teddy's At The Roosevelt Hotel 10/29/09

Before introducing the band to the stage at Teddy's bar in the Roosevelt Hotel last night, Universal Music VP of Marketing Kim Garner told the crowd the upcoming act made her "excited about music again". Sure, cue the comparisons of Florence Welch to Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Annie Lennox or any other flame-haired songstress, but Welch, who performs with a backing band as Florence & the Machine, deserves her spot amongst the red-tressed legends. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Jon Brion, Built To Spill, Florence And The Machine, Dengue Fever

Tonight In Rock: Jon Brion, Built To Spill, Florence And The Machine, Dengue Fever

Tonight, as always, local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be jamming with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. Legendary Boise-based indie rock progenitors Built To Spill will be concluding a two-night stint at the Echoplex. And, lastly, LA-based Cambodian rock outfit Dengue Fever (LAist Interview, Review) will be gracing the Broad Stage in Santa Monica. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Troubadour to catch British singer-songwriter Florence and the Machine. LAist favorites, local dance-infused rock duo IO Echo are slated to kick things off. more ›
