London-Bound Flights Canceled due to Volcanic Ash

LAX officials this morning are reporting that at least two British Airways flights have been canceled today after volcanic ash from Iceland has drifted over Europe. "[Airport Operations is] into the US carriers that fly to Europe too," LAX spokesman Marshall Lowe. More cancellations are expected as further checks are made with airlines. Passengers advised to check with their airlines if they are departing on flights to Europe.” UPDATE: 4 arrival flights and 5 departure flights from/to London have been cancelled (British Airways, American Airlines, United Airlines and Air New Zealand). A malfunctioning transformer caused a small grass fire and some power outages at LAX late this morning. The outage is affecting three international flights on the remote West end of the airport as DWP workers move to restore power to the area. The planes, each are carrying over 200 passengers to Tokyo, Santiago and Shanghai, cannot leave their gates because the attached pedestrian walkways need electricity to detach. more ›

Flights Delayed Nationally, LAX Hardly Affected

Flights taking off from airports across the country were delayed after a communications breakdown occurred with the Federal Aviation Administration's processing data for flight-plans at two separate facilities near Atlanta, Georgia and in Salt Lake City, Utah. As for LAX, the FAA reported little to no impact to flights departing West of Chicago and Dallas, according to Treva Miller, an LAX Spokesperson. "As of 2:38 p.m. PST, LAX was not experiencing any flight arrival or departure delays longer than 15 minutes," she said. more ›

LAX to Honolulu Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Takeoff

American Airlines Flight 81 made an emergency landing at LAX around 9:30 this morning, temporarily shutting down the airport as passengers exited on the runway via the plane's emergency chutes. The pilot of the Honolulu-bound 757 reported smoke in the cockpit shortly after liftoff. The plane circled around the airport and landed soon after on runway 7-Left. LAFD assisted passengers down two emergency chutes. No injuries were reported. No fire was found and the cause of the smoke was unknown, according to the LAFD's Brian Humphrey. Terminal One was evacuated early this morning after security screeners saw something that resembled a grenade, prompting a near 40-minute evacuation of the Southwest Airlines terminal. After officials identified it as a toy grenade, operations went back to normal. LAX officials told KNBC that passengers should be reminded "not to pack anything that resembles a weapon" and "recommended that travelers alert security screeners ahead of time if they have anything in their possession that could be mistaken for a weapon." more ›
