LAistory: The Santa Monica Pier

On September 9th, the Santa Monica Pier celebrated its Centennial. Fireworks lit up the sky and thousands of people gathered to honor a landmark that seems to be synonymous not only with Santa Monica, but with Los Angeles, and our love affair with having fun at the edge of the Pacific Ocean

Party Like it's 1984

If you're near the Coliseum on Saturday night and see the Cauldron lit up, fireworks in the sky, and Mary Lou Retton, Edwin Moses, and Rafer Johnson walking by, you're not in a time warp. But you can wear your aviator sunglasses -- just in case.

We may have spent the evening watching fireworks go off all along the horizon, in the streets, on the hills, and from major venues in Los Angeles, and we may have fallen asleep to the not-so-dulcet sounds of neighbors snap-crackle-popping their own stash of illegal fireworks into the wee hours, but we also woke up to a few great photos posted online from last night's many fireworks displays.

Checkpoint Scheduled in Pasadena for Fireworks, Not Drunks

How's this for punishment? Police checkpoints will be set up on Saturday around hillside areas not to make sure you're driving sober, but to see if you have fireworks. If you get busted, they could confiscate your car, throw you in jail or fine you $50,000, according to the Pasadena Star News. Remember, for the most part, fireworks are illegal and only some cities allow "safe and sane" ones. And of course, they'll be on the hunt for illegally parked cars.

Early Warning: Fireworks are Illegal and Dangerous!

This weekend's Fourth of July holiday and the many celebrations taking place all over Los Angeles means that it's time to remind the non-professional pyrotech-ies that fireworks are, in fact, not only illegal, but also dangerous. The Daily News quotes County Fire Captain Mike Brown, who says: "The use of fireworks not only can cause fires, but can result in severe injuries and burns if not used properly."

The "Lost Fire" in Agoura Hills last Tuesday was under investigation by LA County Sheriff's after they found evidence of arson. The case soon was solved after the responsible parties turned themselves in. "Two juveniles have confessed to accidentally starting an 80-acre brush fire near Malibu Creek State Park while playing with fireworks, a sheriff's lieutenant said Thursday," reported the Associated Press. Witnesses told police earlier that they saw two boys running from the fire that day of.

This week didn't seem to be as hot as predicted, but this week's classical pick is packing some heat! Which is literally the case here, since they will have fireworks at the end of the show this Thursday at the Hollywood Bowl. The program has a distinctly Eastern flavor, with music from Russian and Chinese composers, with the world famous pianist Lang Lang and LA Phil's Assistant Principal cellist Ben Hong as the soloists. The program starts with Wu Zuqiang's arrangement of Hua Yanjun's Moon Reflected on the "Erquan" Fountain for string orchestra, followed by Tan Dun's Crouching Tiger Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, composed for the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (if you couldn't figure that out).

The use of fireworks and explosives are prohibited in the City of Los Angeles, but that doesn't stop people. The city estimates illegal fireworks caused a total of over $380,000 in property damages in 2007. Eeek!

How will you be spending the holiday? Many people see fireworks from the same location every year. Others search the city for the best show.

With gas prices high (Los Angeles average is currently $4.597 for regular), the Auto Club is predicting less people traveling this holiday season. 3.029 million Southern Californians to be exact, which is about 1% or around 30,000 people less than previous years. The majority (80%) will travel by car the rest by air.

I often take short, random Quicktime videos with my camera. The uploads are limited, so they are sometimes abrupt. Here is a little entertainment from Wicked Wednesdays, the Lotus Festival. and Mods and Rockers. Let's start things off with a clip of Emily Rozek singing the hit showtune, Popular. Many more after the jump!...

All fireworks in LA are illegal. Any time you drive over the speed limit, that's illegal too. Any time you drink a few more beers than you should and get behind the wheel, that's illegal. And any time you lie under oath and obstruct justice when a Special Prosecutor is trying to figure out if the Vice President of the United States authorized a leak of classified information so this administration could continue to...

One year a neighbor invited us to the exclusive 4th of July soiree at the Wilshire Country Club. Not knowing what to expect, we drove over to the club and inside the very big gates. Our daughter enjoyed the bar-b-que, moon-bounce, giant slides, enormous dance floor with DJ, ice cream sundaes, and of course a spectacular fireworks show. We thanked our friends for including us and drove home to put our little one to...

No, this is not the set of Casino 2. After 49 years, the hotel that helped modernize the glam-it-up, get-you-drunk, take-your-money Vegas we know and love is kaput. Stardust was imploded in grand fashion early this morning to make room for the $4.4 billion Boyd's Echelon Place megaplex. AP photo by Darrin Bush. More at Yahoo! News' slideshow....
