In the Mood: Film Noir in Photos and on the Big Screen
Inspired by ImproTheatre's LA Noir UnScripted, we thought about looking at present-day Los Angeles through the lens of the genre, and a time gone by. So we dug into our LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr, where we found a few noir-esque shots that evoke the spirit of a time immortalized in film and stories, where trenchcoat-sporting private dicks navigated the dark streets--and darker barrooms--of the City of Angels.
LAist Film Calendar: Handsome Harry & Sexy Stephen
There may no longer be a country for old men, but Handsome Harry proves there's still kino for them. Harry plants itself proudly in the old boys' club, where women are no good, sons are all-too-wayward and there's nothing a bottle of scotch won't fix. When retired sailor Harry Sweeney (Jamey Sheridan) receives once-crewmate Tom Kelly (Steve Buscemi)'s dying wish for redemption, he becomes like a ghost, slipping in and out of old friends' lives and haunting them with memories of hidden violence. The disquieting man-to-man vignettes draw handsomely from the old school of independent film. Director Bette Gordon emphasizes a story rarely told, rather than than hip aesthetics or snarky dialogue. It's even got the once-obligatory open ending. Preserve the endangered species of mid-budget adult drama - head over to Laemmle's Sunset any time this weekend and check it out.

Look to the skies! The flying saucers will always be there! Not even your local cinematheque is safe when evil extraterrestrials & suave spacemen invade Santa Monica. Should our valiant heroes survive these "Far Out" encounters, they must still contend with a Martian militia, led by none other than our governor himself! I heard it through my magick Tesla Coil!
Film Noir Dance Uncovered in Hollywood
Earlier this year, choreographer Meg Wolfe received a Lester Horton award for her tireless work for the Los Angeles dance community. These Horton awards are akin to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) citations, in that the artists, themselves, make the selections and vote for the awardees. Ms. Wolfe took it all in stride, smiling while keeping track of the monthly Anatomy Riot showcases that she curates, the weekly DanceBank class program she organizes and a myriad of who-knows-what-else is going on in her life.
