In a salute to women who rock, the 10th anniversary season of the KCRW World Festival at the Hollywood Bowl continues on Sunday. Opening for Feist is Brooklyn-based soul sensation Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, and Vancouver’s global-pop group Pacifika. more ›

This Month in Rock

This Month in Rock

You know its officially summer when the Hollywood Bowl schedule is in full swing and your local Whole Foods boast empty shelves of wine and cheese. Yes, the sun is out later and perfect temperatures always serve as a pleasant compliment to any night of music, but that isn’t to say that there’s nothing going on in your favorite sweaty rock venue. July happens to be a jam-packed month, and we’d like to give you a little breakdown. more ›

Top 10 Albums of the Year

Top 10 Albums of the Year

The year is coming to a close and, like all procrastinators, I am late on my "Best of" duties. Nevertheless, 2007 was a jam-packed year full of great music. With some very welcome returns, some flops, and some breakout contenders, 2007 was a testament to the ever-changing, ever-exciting musical atmosphere. Anyway, here it is... more ›

KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas - Night Two - 12/9/07

KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas - Night Two - 12/9/07

One look at the bill for Night Two of KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas one might think with all of the INDIE flavor that that LA's "other" rock station was behind the programming. But alas it was KROQ and Night Two featured great performances by Modest Mouse, Muse, Feist, Silversun Pickups, Jimmy Eat World, Spoon and a surprise unannounced performance from the Killers.

Bon Iver's Top Ten of 2007

Bon Iver's Top Ten of 2007

I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their... more ›

Tonight in Rock: Muse, Silversun Pickups, David Gray

Holler's Top Ten of 2007

I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their little world. Therefore, this is an act of paying it forward to those hardworking, underpaid musicians who truly made a difference within the music scene this year. more ›

Grammy Noms Announced: Kanye & Amy Lead the Pack

Grammy Noms Announced: Kanye & Amy Lead the Pack

Grammy nominations were announced early this morning in Los Angeles. Kanye West's album "Graduation" earned eight nods, including Album of the Year and Rap Album of the Year. The increasingly unstable Amy Winehouse garnered six nominations for "Back to Black," including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist. Surprisingly, Bruce Springsteen did not get an Album of the Year nod for "Magic." Other nominees in... more ›

Extra Extra: Grammy Noms, Big Waves, & Free iPods

Nine are dead in Omaha, Nebraska today after a man opened fire in a shopping mall, and then shot himself. Police do not have a motive so far. Did you have this conversation this morning? "Sorry, boss, I can't come in to work today...a terrible cough, I, uh, flu symptoms, definitely -- what waves? Uh, I don't know what you're talking about...." Lots of SoCal surfers took a sick day and busted out on... more ›

Gary Calamar’s Top Ten Albums of 2007

Gary Calamar’s Top Ten Albums of 2007

Tonight is the most excellent show, Open Road on KCRW, which begins at 9:00 p.m., ending at midnight. DJ Gary Calamar mixes roots of Rock, Country, Jazz, Blues, and Soul with new releases that you can most see on his peer's lists. Calamar got his start at KCRW as a volunteer, moving his way to DJ after literally begging on his knees to Chris Douridas for a show. Douridas made a great choice. 1)... more ›

Raul Campos’ Top Ten Albums of 2007

This week we have been delivering Top 10 lists from KCRW's most popular on-air personalities. Tonight we're going to give you a two-fer. First up is native Los Angeleno Raul Campos, host of Nocturna, and the first one on these lists to give it up to Brit faves Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen. Also if you're scoring at home, Radiohead seems to be doing quite well on these KCRW lists. Have a gander at... more ›

Feist & Spoon to Face Off at the Gibson

Feist & Spoon to Face Off at the Gibson

It's a dream date for fans of Canadian songstress Feist and Austin's Spoon. Feist is just now making her break on the world stage, with a little help from Uncle Steve. But anyone with an ear to the Toronto indie rock scene could hear her coming ever since her solo debut, Monarch, was released on the heels of By Divine Right's "Bless This Mess" Tour (she was their rhythm guitarist). For most of this... more ›

iPod Ads Continue to Launch Artists, Just Ask Feist

Not long ago a little band called Jet had a little tune that sounded like the White Stripes a little. Apple used the hyperactive rockabilly flavored single "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" to hype its iPod and the band went on to sell millions of records because of the arrangement. Tonight Feist, an artist no one knew about until Apple used her catchy little song for an iPod commercial, is headlining at the... more ›

The Times weighs in on 2007

The Times weighs in on 2007

These dudes didn't make the list. The year is already over for L.A. Times pop critic Ann Powers; in a piece dated tomorrow, she lays out an unremarkable top 10 albums of 2007. Maybe Powers gave up on 07 when she couldn't get on OiNK anymore. Or perhaps, like Christmas decorations and presidential primaries, top 10 lists are just going up earlier than ever this year. Either way, I guess she's not waiting on... more ›

Extra, Extra: Young, Dumb, and Full of Come

Extra, Extra: Young, Dumb, and Full of Come

A bit of happy news for our sister site over in Texas: the Austin Chronicle just named Austinist Best Local "Fun" News Site. Yay for the Ist-iverse! The correct term is babes, sir: "Point Break Live!" -- yes that's right, as in the classic 1991 Patrick Swayze-Keanu Reeves film -- is coming to a stage near you! NBC is leaving its longtime home in Burbank for the greener pastures of Universal City, or Campo... more ›

Polaris: Canada's Musical Badge of Honor

Polaris: Canada's Musical Badge of Honor

On Monday evening, the winner of the 2nd annual Polaris Music Prize will be announced. This is not earth shattering news because many don’t even know what it is. The Polaris Music Prize is Canada’s equivalent to the U.K.’s Mercury Prize. It is an award given to the best Canadian album of the year, regardless of genre, sales, or record label. The winner receives $20,000 cash and a bevy of publicity. The initial jury... more ›

Hot Artist: Sara Bareilles

Hot Artist: Sara Bareilles

The Fiona Apple comparisons are inevitable. As soon as Sara Bareilles opens her mouth, she reveals the vocal depth of Apple with the pop sensibility of Rachael Yamagata and Regina Spektor and the soulful sultriness of Norah Jones and Feist. In fact, on her website, she says: "I write mostly on piano and I'm a girl, so lots of people say it's Norah Jones, or Fiona Apple. That's fine. I love Norah's subtlety and... more ›

TV Junkie: America's Got....Branson on Letterman

TV Junkie: America's Got....Branson on Letterman

A Word or 56+/-: Even the movie selections suck tonight unless you want to watch an Ida Lupinow filmfest on TCM, which I really don't want to do. I'm superexcited to see Parker Posey on Late Late and hopefully I'll catch Feist on Conan after switching over. Tonight - Tuesday - June 12th, 2007 Mets @ Dodgers (PRIME, 7:00 p.m.) Angels @ Reds (Fox Sports, 7:30 p.m.) On the Lot (Fox, 8:00 p.m.) The... more ›

TV Junkie: Rickles on Letterman - See Him While He's Still Alive; Kimmel Does His Show From A Bus

A Word or 76: CBS lineup tonight is wiped out by the CMAs and unless you are up for a Sir Laurence Olivier marathon on TCM then there's no movies on. I'm getting kind of sick of the parade of authors on late night TV, particularly Comedy Central - who the eff has time to read when there's so much bad TV? Speaking of bad TV, we're down to the final 3 on both... more ›

Who's Got Next?

Who's Got Next?

It should be established that when it comes to the next hot ish (yes, you can still say 'ish' in 2006), URB is not to be doubted. The local mag was up on M.I.A., Bloc Party, The Go! Team, Feist, Dears and Arcade Fire long before they were the top tracks on your last.fm charts. Well, tonight, they are celebrating the future of music with not one but two parties. more ›

Your Nature Driving Soundtrack

Your Nature Driving Soundtrack

So, if you're on your way to find some Nature in LA this weekend, might we suggest downloading two tracks from Oliver Wang's Soul-Sides? He was in town this past weekend and came across The Devics and Feist (one of our favorite artists from 2005) while listening to Anne Litt's new show on KCRW - The A Track (which is also available daily at kcrwmusic.com). more ›

Free Gig Guide: Tuesday

Free Gig Guide: Tuesday

If you're in the mood for smooth vocals and a fresh sound, check out Feist for
free tonight at Amoeba
Records
at 6:30 PM. Call (323) 245-6400 for more information.

Who's Feist you ask? This Canadian-born, French-based singer is nostalgic-sounding with a modern twist—mixing
jazz, R&B and pop. Leslie
Feist fronts her eponymous band with an effortless, mellow charm (reminiscent of Sade and Jem)
that makes the music syrupy-sweet. But the the ease
with which she sings belies the underlying intelligent lyrics, resulting
in a seductive, sophisticated sound that is lacking in so many of today's
pop tarts. Prior to "Feist" Leslie
was the guest vocalist for the [underrated] Norwegian folkies "Kings
of Convenience."

Suggested listening: Inside
and Out
, One Evening, and Mushaboom.

See
a complete list of free gigs happening this week.
